Disclaimer: I am biased towards south indian food. I have tried lots of restaurants in Bay Area which serve ‘so-called’ South Indian food and believe me not a single one comes close to authentic south indian flavors. This place happily proved me wrong. Went for Sunday brunch. Decent wait time. Hustling with people. Feels just like home with the aromas around. Service was quick. We ordered 14 pic mini ghee idly — soft idlies which melt in your mouth. They serve unlimited versions of dosas. We chose Mysore masala dosa which was perfect. Combo 1 is good and little bit of everything. Rawa kichdi was really yummy and is a must try. Vada was crispy, less oily and amazing. Surprisingly coconut chutney tasted like real chutney unlike other restaurants. I am definitely coming back for more :)

I visited this restaurant after a long time. My previous visit here was a free years ago when we received cold food, bad service, and long waits. I’m sad to say that this restaurant has not improved at all. The food served is still cold, and they still take a long time after ordering food to serve it. Madras café, which is equally crowded, always serves hot food & very quickly! I can’t ideated why sarvanah bhavan is still in business!

It is one of more authentic south Indian restaurants around bay area. Done of their items like combo meals(combo 1) are really good deals and they are tasty. It’s not very costly and is a vegetarian shop. I visit this place very frequently.

Nice food. Whenever I feel like eating typical South Indian food thats my place to go. The good: Awesome taste Real quick service specially during lunch hours when we have to rush back to office Good quantity One star less for not so polite service but it hardly matters to me especially when the taste is so good.

Really… why do people like this place? The food is not good, the service is even worse. We were there for 90 mins and the young caucasian couple sitting next to us — who were there on a date — were not asked once if they wanted to order something. I find that rude and racist! Sometimes I dont mind putting up with bad service for great food but since this establishment lacks both — I say stay clear!!!

We came here to make it a to go. Disclaimer: I’m from NJ, a visitor here so completely ignorant of the local culture and customer service at restaurants. The cashier was unfriendly for two things: we asked his opinion for what’s the most popular dish that he would recommend us to buy and he gave a blunt answer. Shied away from the conversation. When I asked him about the halwa from the desert section and what it is, and if I could taste it a bit as it looked interesting, he refused that said you can only buy half a pound. Clearly this is a popular place as the food was certainly good, I just wish the customer service was also good. Sambhar, Special Kolumbu, Avial — all to go were excellent, and good quantity for the price.

Best masala dosa in the bay! The chutneys and sambar were well balanced and uniquely delicious. If you enjoy dosa you’ll love this place. Would love to be a regular!

Poor service on new years !! The cups weren’t clean, spoons weren’t clean, restroom wasn’t clean, the orders were missed. Although the food was good and I do understand there is so much crowd on new years, but if you cannot handle the crowd with your workforce, why bother letting a lot of people in when you know you cannot handle it. Even the tables weren’t cleaned properly. This restaurant needs some serious management lessons. They’re just getting away with the delicious food that they’re serving. It’s going to be a costly trade off.

There is always a different experience you go here(and not in a good way) Some day the person seating you at the table is rude, won’t honor your request ever. Cashier to waiters all are extremely rude. I guess they have a good business and don’t care about their customer — that way business don’t last for long. We always avoid going to Sarvanabhavan Sunnyvale — the one in Fremont is much better in comparison.

Best Authentic South Indian food around. I can’t find better channa batura in the Bay Area. I don’t know why this place has such mediocre reviews. It is as authentic as you can get and you can tell by the patronage. This place is fantastic!

As someone born and brought up in south India, a good Dosa is something I’ll drive a long way for. And that’s just what I do to come here. Though there are quite a few Dosa places that have come and gone, this place remains a staple, both in the Bay Area and in my list of must-goto restaurants. Here’s the main things that I recommend whole heartedly: — Dosas. They are hella authentic. Yum and totally hits the spot — coconut chutney. VERY few restaurants do coconut chutney well. Most mess this one up even if they do a decent dosa. To my knowledge only 2 places do a good chutney. This place and incredibly overpriced Dosa in San Francisco. — Chole Baturas: Granted this is not a South Indian dish. But I challenge you to find me a North Indian restaurant that does CBs as fluffy, chewy, and just overall yum as they do it here. Lots of people complain about service. Granted it’s not your snooty French joint with Waiters hovering around. It’s a busy place(justifiably) and waiters are running about. However, every time I have asked for something they have only been courteous and prompt about it. No complaints. Only praises.

I went here recently with my kid during lunch time. and the waiter kept us waiting for 20 minutes before I had to physically go and get him for order. He kept on looking but never came by and instead went to other tables to attend. Bad service! Food was average, seen better.

I had eaten at their Dubai location last year, so when a friend recommended I try this restaurant, I jumped at the opportunity. There was no wait when we got there on a Sunday afternoon. We were quickly seated. The servers were friendly, chatty and made some recommendations that turned out to be great. We ordered the special thali with Pooris and a second order of Pooris(which came with 2 veggie curries). The food was out of this world!!! The paneer masala, beetroot dessert, sambar, rasam etc. were all great. The highlight of the meal was the Rava Kesari. On our way out we chatted with the cashier for a few minutes, He takes great pride in the fact that Saravanna Bhavan has branches all over the world, serving great food to food lovers everywhere. I am already looking forward to my next visit here. Highly recommended!!!

It;s a first ever, metal piece in the food! It happened on Nov 14th, 2:15PM. I ordered vegetable biriyani. Something got stuck in my mouth, for my surprise it was a metal piece. No apologizes from the management, not a word about improving process. Just waived the fees of Vegetable Biriyani. They prepare the vegetable biriyani upfront but no word on throwing the contaminated food.

I visited Saravanaa Bhavan in Sunnyvale for the first time with some co-workers on a friend’s recommendation. I’d been to another restaurant from this chain in Delhi, and the food there was as good as it is here. It’s pretty consistent in that sense, and is a lot like an IHOP for South Indian food. It is pretty busy with tons families, so if you’re angling for an intimate meal, you might consider taking a date elsewhere. I ordered idli and the Mysore masala dosa and both were fantastic. Service was a little spotty, and we had to grab a pitcher of water from a nearby empty table. We were seated pretty quickly for a big group of 13, so I think that levels it out pretty nicely. The food was reasonably priced. I don’t think I paid more than $ 16.00 for everything including tip from our table and tax. We were asked at the end of our meal to leave and make room for other customers, but ultimately I’d probably go back and bring some other friends as well!

1. Summary: Very good South Indian vegetarian food, my family’s default restaurant for comfort South Indian food. (Points 9⁄10) 2. Food: I’ve loved pretty much everything that I’ve ordered here. Dosas, idly, vadas, pongal, thaali, parotta, coffee, my wife even likes their chana bhatura. Their chutneys and sambar are very good. My favorites here are: Mysore masala dosa Butter masala dosa filter coffee Pongal Mixed Vegetable Parotta Full thaali I dont like their uttapam though(actually there are very few places even in India who’s uttapam I like) (Points 9⁄10) 3. Ambience : Very bare-bones, go here only if you care about good food. pretty cramped and chaotic. (Points 6⁄10) 4. Price: Reasonably priced (Points: 8⁄10) 5. Variety: Good south Indian variety (Points: 9⁄10) 6. Service: decent. very prompt most of the times. (Points: 8⁄10) 7. Value for money: 9⁄10 8. Wishlist: Keep it up! Would love if you would be a little more flexible about substitutions in the thaali and combos. ***Note — I personally care about food the most and hence my overall rating is more biased towards food and less towards other factors like ambience, price, service, etc. My taste buds are more used to Indian flavors, so I’m not able to always appreciate foreign flavors, although I love expanding my horizons and trying out new foods. I am mostly a vegetarian, and occasionally eat meat, so my orders have a heavy bias towards vegetarian items.

Stopped going at SB following a bunch of bad experiences — where the dosa turned out to be bad and extremely sour tasting. The server acted surprised when we told him so. He eve insisted that the dosa was alright, and tried to give some explanation around it being the same always. We did not ask for a replacement and asked it to be taken back. They did charge us for it. The taste has gotten inconsistent over time and the service, the lesser said the better. I’d rather go to Madras Café or Madurai Idli Kadai instead. It takes a masochist to go to SB in Sunnyvale. If you do want to go to SB, then stick to the Fremont one.

A very good place for South Indian food! Lots of dosas of various kinds and permutations of ingredients. We were reading the menu and the table next to us was served. We asked them what kind of dosa two of them had ordered. They were so friendly that they gave us a taste. It was so good that is what my wife and I ordered!(Very friendly customers!) My wife had the Rava Masala Dosa($ 7.95) and I had the Onion Rava Masala Dosa($ 8.50). Both were very good, but the addition of the red onions(which appeared to be sauteed before being made a part of the dosa) gave it a fantastic flavor. There were 3 chutneys served(I think that they were tomato, coconut, and cilantro) which were excellent. There was also a small cup of sambar. The Mango Lassis($ 3.95) were thick and had a rich mango flavor. We also had a «dessert of the day»($ 4.50), an Indian sweet that was different(unfortunately, I forgot the name). It wasn’t the usual too sweet thing, but mildly sweet with lentils and almonds. The food is very good. The service could use a bit of improvement. My wife and I ordered at the same time, and her order was served long before mine was served. She was almost finished with hers by the time mine was served. They need to coordinate better in the kitchen so that all the orders at the table are served at about the same time.(A nearby table also had different people served with long intervals between each one). I will return for the food, and hopefully the service will be better.
