It’s in a La Quinta, so if you’re looking for ambiance, it’s not here. Food was average. It was a bit pricey for what they give you. I think the fish tacos had actual fish sticks in them $ 12. Devil shrimp lacked spice $ 13. Margaritas were advertised on the roadside board outside as $ 1.99, but apparently that doesn’t start until after 9pm — total scam! Hats off to the one man who seemed to be doing everything, serving, bartending, hosting, etc. He may have been cooking the food as well. We had a large group and they did give us a spacious room in the back which was very nice.

I hate to rate a place after one visit but since I don’t think I will go back to Senioritas Piqué, let’s get down to it. I don’t think the place is horrible which is why I give it 3 stars. However, I think they need to do some major improvement with the guest experience. I ordered the Enchiladas Banderas, an interesting display of three sauces each in the color of the Mexican flag with a side of refried beans and fried ice cream for dessert. The food was fairly good. Not really sold on the fried ice cream. Not my favorite version of it. In all fairness, I placed my order over the phone for pick up. I frequently find places in my hood that I can order and pick up. I was hoping Senoritas Piqué would be one of my «go to» spots for this. When I arrived to pick up my food, the staff seemed very disinterested in finding my order then assisting me in getting it paid for. The place was practically empty so it wasn’t like they were so busy that they couldn’t have been more helpful. Disappointing. I don’t think I will be giving them a second chance at this point. Maybe if I see a few more reviews I might cave and stop in one more time.

We went back Sunday afternoon for a late lunch. There were two other customers there when we arrived. This time we tried some combo plates, including chicken tostadas, fish tacos and pork tamals, served with standard rice and beans(no substitutions allowed for the combo). Of all these, the fish tacos were the best by far. They were excellent and good enought to come back for. The rice was also about the best red rice I’ve had in St. Louis. The chicken on the tostadas tasted like black pepper was the only seasoning. Pork Tamal wa kind of bland — I’ve definitely had better. Service was great once again. All in all, we weren’t so impressed this time around. Since we have had a couple of really good dishes here, we’ll probably come back again. I do still recommend it for Mexican food lovers.

*Update* Well, since when I first went, the selection as gone downhill, and what’s left is okay but not spectacular. Which is unfortunate, because there’s not much in the way of good Mexican in this part of the county. Still, you can probably expect prompt service, because no one seems to be eating here anymore. First of all, a quick note: this is not the mediocre Mexican place that was here before. This is a new place, a sister restaurant to Señor Piqué, and it’s quite good. Admittedly, things started a bit mediocre. Service was prompt and friendly, ut when we got our chips and salsa it was a bit unspectacular. The chips were lightly salted and crisp, but not particularly flavorful. The salsa was okay, but if it wasn’t jarred salsa then they should go ahead and use jarred salsa, because it tastes the same. They have a long margarita list, but since many of them sounded terrifying(Redneck margarita? Jolly Rancher margarita?), my dining partner and I went with the house margarita. It was solid. It had a nice taste of lime without being overpowering, it was far from being overly sweet, and the tequila blended in nicely, but it was far from the best margarita I’ve ever had. Yet, it was good, and I’d probably knock back a few on their numerous margarita specials nights. Then, dinner came. And things got really tasty. Senoritas Piqué offers a different type of Mexican than you get at most places. It isn’t just the street food that is at many authentic Mexican places, and while you can get things like chimichangas and massive, American-style burritos, you have to order off of the«Gringo Mexican» section to do so. I had the enchiladas de mole, which come with chicken, and they were spectacular. The mole had a delightful dark chocolate bitter taste without being too bitter. With a sauce this strong, you don’t really taste the flavor of the chicken, so the real question is whether its texture is nice and juicy. The answer is yes. I also tried some of the longazina(a Mexican sausage) my friend ordered, which came in a mild tomatillo salsa. The sausages were plump and juicy, but not too fatty, and were cooked lightly so that they retained a deep red color on the inside. Delicious. The salsa wasn’t especially strong, but that’s probably the way it should be, to keep it from overpowering the sausage. Senoritas Piqué offers more sides than the standard rice and beans. Indeed, they offer two types of refried beans and two types of rice. I got refried black beans, which tasted of concentrated black bean but with a rich, creamy texture, which was balanced by the occasional bit of bean skin that hand’t completely melted down. My friend got poblanos and esquites. The poblanos had a nice mild pepper flavor with some richness from sour cream and queso fresco. The esquites, which is basically corn mixed with mayo, was alright. It tasted like tangy, fatty corn, which is good for a bit or so, but my friend got tired of it after a bit, and I figure I would have too. All in all, I’m pretty sure I’m coming back. After all, it’s not everyday you get a very nice Mexican place in Sunset Hills.
