One stop shop. This store has a huge selection of DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. They also sell wine, beer, soda, and other refreshments typically enjoyed while watching a movie. I hope this place stays in business for years to come.

It makes my heart happy that there is still an honest to God movie rental place around. Not only that, the owner and team here are so helpful and know what they’re talking about! Great selection of movies– and they even have popcorn, beer, wine, and snacks! Truly a gem, I hope it never goes away in this land of digital watching.

Finally, a video store that has most everything, is bikable, great hours and a Fred.(Fred is the lovely man runnin’ shit). It has the spirit of the treasured old school video spots complete with lots of healthy plants, a ginormous selection of videos and games, and a gumball machine greeter. Check it out at once I say!

I had tried on Netflix, unsuccessfully twice to rent a foreign movie«Central Station» and thought I would try here. I was surprised by their selection and asked if they had it. They did, and I rented it. A definite place to come back to.

This is such a cool place. What was once so common is now so rare. The lone video store in Tacoma. Stadium, Blockbuster, all gone in the past 2 years. And here sits Backstage Video like the last knight defending the castle. Times have changed, for sure. But what’s cool about this place is how it really hasn’t changed. It’s a throwback to the older(and better) days of rental houses. You walk in and it’s a bit crowded simply because it’s a library of cinema. You have a movie playing overhead on the flat screen, you have fresh popped popcorn, and aisles of films new and old that your Robobox would never think to stock. There’s movie memorabilia and posters on walls. They even have VHS for sale, still. It’s truly a place to check out, and worth keeping alive.

I have Netflix and use Redbox, but still find myself here at least once a week. This is the kind of local video store we used to have where they’d remember your name, before Blockbuster came along with vast copies of crappy movies and constant«up sells». Fred always has great selections of new releases on DVD and BluRay, including imports, plus a massive selection of older movies on Bluray, DVD, and even VHS. I’ve never known Backstage Video not to carry a movie I was looking for. Backstage even has complete Director’s collections organized by director, for you Kubrick or Wes Anderson fans. Games for most popular consoles. Backstage even carries some secret porn in the backroom by the restrooms(safely out of view of kids). Update: now selling beer and wine, too. Five stars for a local video store, one star off because it’s messy.

Fantastic little gem of a video store! For one, I prefer to support local neighborhood businesses, and also, they have WEEDSSEASON8 and other rare hard-to-get Showtime series DVDs(and *recent seasons* of them) that even Blockbuster does not have :) Also, they get many titles 28 days before Redbox and Netflix does! I would gladly pay $ 3.99 and see a movie 28 days before I would get to see it through Redbox for cheap. This is a great local store with a friendly owner and lots of random, old, hard to find titles. Love it. Please do not go out of business!!! :-D

Totally great place to grab a movie and cinema advice. Nice selection of new, old, euro and artsy. Plus the owner can suggest a great movie when I am at a loss. That ol’ «everyone in the family likes something different» scenario :^0! Like Grace said, family owned and in peril a bit like all local places. Let’s hold onto this gem and give ‘em some business :^).

Bottom line: rent your favorites on the spot from a local business for just under $ 4 a pop. A nice selection of indies and blockbusters at your fingertips — at one time, not such a difficult proposition, now very difficult to come by. Curb side service, literally. Call Fred, the owner of Backstage Video, and he will run out to your car and pick up your returns! I’m a recent orphan of the glorious Stadium Video(RIP) — and I am very happy to find Backstage welcoming me with open arms and a plethora of flicks to satisfy my very particular demands. There is an auteur setup of sorts — major directors seem to have their own sections. I admit I’m an eavesdropper, and it warmed my heart to listen to Fred talking to some customers about attending his child’s school auction recently. Sure, netflx and redbx might be slightly cheaper — but are they putting money back into MY community??? No. This guy is, and I am grateful and will give him my business to show my appreciation… and pick up a great video while I’m at it. A local business worth your time.
