Pros –Pretty great food, great burgers –fair pricing –cool condiment bar Cons –cash only –would like fresh french fries, zucchini, and mushrooms instead of reheated pre-made frozen stuff –awkward way of having to yell to order from the middle of the line rather than the front when you get there

Love this place… they do burgers right! Great service too… the guys are real down to earth and customer focused… the Menu is relatively small… but there’s no reason to eat a burger anywhere else inTempe…

Went in and had a bacon cheeseburger, hot dog and onion rings. Tried the fries too. Everything was pretty good. I wasn’t able to finish it all because the burger is a pretty good size and it’s nice watching everything cooked in front of you. It’s not the best burger I’ve ever had, but it’s good. It’s the type of place that would be good to hit during lunch with some friends. The guys working the front were nice and helpful.

Great burgers! Their grilled chicken sandwich with green chilies is pretty incredible too. Thank you, Chuck Box Team for always making our visit delicious & memorable.

It’s a pretty good burger with loads of smoky charcoal flavor. Grilled in front of you over actual charcoal, this burger place makes them just like your family did for cook outs on the fourth of July. They even have you put on your own condiments like you did back home. Which all in all is great, but also pretty limiting. They do make burgers a bit better than your dad ever did, but not by a whole lot. It really is like eating food from a family barbeque – tasty and full of nostalgia, but not much more. It IS cheap, to be fair, but doesn’t live up to the hype.

A must-try-burger-joint in an unassuming spot; delicious, affordable, and a unique atmosphere! Be aware of 2 things: — CASHONLY — Be ready to yell your order at the guy well before you get to the front of the line.

Brought a friend from out town here and it was a big hit.!This place has worked for so long because they do burgers and fries the right away… over a charcoal flame right in front of you. When you first walk in you can find the menu is above the grill area, and then you place your order with the person taking orders next to the grill. The menu is short and simple. .so it shouldn’t take long to figure it out. I got the standard burger with cheese, and fries. After paying, cash only, you go to the condiment bar and get the toppings you desire. Rustic atmosphere and TV usually playing some sort of sports game in the corner. I find the fries(not soggy, just the right amount if crispy) and burger are much better here then In and Out.

Slam Dunk! I do NOT eat burgers… I ate here– the basic burger with cheese– it was great, tasted like a beef burger and my stomach is happy!

This place is the real deal if you want some awesome burgers near ASU. Chuck Box has been around for decades and I just had to see what the burgers were all about. I decided to try their small cheeseburger and fries. You can tell that them putting the patties on the charcoal grill makes a huge difference as far as taste, and it was very good. Their fries too are some of the better ones that I’ve had as well. While the food was certainly very good and I would come back here again, there are some gripes that I have with this place. Parking around here can be difficult which could potentially deter me from coming here more often. Also, the ordering assembly line style can be awkward somewhat at times but it’s not a big deal to me. As long as the food is good I don’t really care about those things but I just wanted to make others aware of them. I do anticipate coming back here again as the food was excellent.

This place was so good! I got the bacon cheeseburger with mayo and with American cheese w/fries. They cook your food right in front of you over a charcoal grill so it’s fresh and hot when you get it. Their root beer off the tap is awesome and served in a cold chilled glass mug. Kinda sucks that they only take cash for payment but they do have an ATM inside for you to use. I think it’s a $ 2 fee to use it though. If you’re in the area, check this place out. If I ever come back, you better believe I’m stopping by this place. 4 stars because they don’t accept CC.

The most simple, basic burgers you can think of. I mean that in the absolute best way. Sort of a ‘salad-bar-build-your-own’ feel to it. They give you the meat of your choice, the cheese of your choice, and a bun, and let you do what you want to it. Cash only, so heads up on that. Delicious.

Gotta love back-to-basics places like The Chuckbox! Simple menu, affordable and cash only, and quite the bang for your buck in terms of deliciousness from such an unassuming spot. I got«the great big one» and a side of fries and it was all awesome! Don’t be too intimidated when they throw that frisbee-sized burger patty down on the grill(it shrinks up to just a bit larger than the bun). The thinness allows them to handle the large volume of customers and leaves you with a perfectly-cooked burger. I’m not sure what their blend is, but it’s a delicious patty! The fries are pretty standard, but they were cooked perfectly(not too dry, not too soft, and not too salty). The fixin’ bar is nicely stocked and clean, despite what you’d expect upon entering a place with such divey vibes, as well. The only thing that was a bit intimidating as first-timers was the ordering process. If it’s your first time, maybe check the menu online before you go. If the lines are long, don’t be surprised if they ask you what you want well before you get close enough to the menu to make your decision. The staff is nice, but you certainly feel a bit rushed by their system! Luckily, I’m guessing they do a pretty good job with whatever they turn out, so you could likely order anything on-the-fly, and you won’t be disappointed. As a fan of places like this, I appreciate their pace, quality, and service, and would certainly visit again if I ever return to Tempe! Oh, and the cheap prices don’t hurt, either!

Amazing burger spot. Juan(who’s worked there for 30+ years) really has the science of a perfectly grilled burger figured out. With that and competitive prices you can’t go wrong.

One of the best burgers I’ve ever had. Basic, no frills joint — but excellent. We got there around 11:15 and were glad we did. When we left closer to noon, there was a line of at least 8 people waiting to order. Parking is a bit of a pain. They have a tiny lot but then you are on your own to navigate street parking and in that area can be a challenge.

The Chuck Box is an excellent place to go to for anyone looking to grab a quick, yet completely satisfying and incredibly tasty burger. With a variety of sizes to choose from it will surely fulfill anyone’s hunger, no matter how big your appetite is. Also, the food is prepared in front of you, so you can watch the entire process. Minus one star for having a rude and uncharismatic server with absolutely no personality. But all in all, great food, great place.

If only the Board of Regents knew what a powerful incentive they had at their disposal in attracting students to Arizona’s largest state university. I like to say that the Chuckbox was one of the main reasons I went to ASU. Although I didn’t mention it in my personal statement, the delicious smell of mesquite-grilled beef and chicken, sometimes wafting down University Drive as far as PV East, also certainly didn’t discourage me from returning this year for law school. The Chuckbox has been an affordable, unhealthy indulgence for me for years. It’s hard to go wrong with their sandwiches(except maybe with the veggie burger… but I’ve never tried it), but my favorites are the Guacamole Bacon Burger and the Tijuana Torpedo. In my opinion the fries and onion rings don’t quite live up to the glory of the grilled items — I think they buy them frozen — but they’re not bad either and I pretty much always order some anyway. Same goes for the fried zucchini: probably frozen, but delicious anyway with a burger. I find the atmosphere — loud, a little smoky, definitely aptly described as a «shack» — perfectly complementary to the fare, but some might disagree. I’ve also developed a weird sort of respect for their cash-only policy… this Old-West burger joint doesn’t give a damn about catering to the demands of twenty-first-century suburbanites for convenience and they don’t have to(well, I guess they do have an ATM in the corner). But I can also see how many would see that as more of an inconvenience than a hip quirk. If you’re in the area, definitely stop by. In an area mostly dominated by chains and cheap, college-town blandness, the Chuckbox is a one-of-a-kind beacon.

Man, I usually have my spots but after word of mouth from a friend, and seeing the reviews I HAD to come check this place out! This place throws down on some burgers! I got the Tijuana Torpedo, wifee got the cheeseburger. We got the drinks and fries, but saw they had beer battered onion rings. I’m a sucker for them, so you already know ! The food was amazing! Sounds like a lot of hype but very very good and reasonably priced. The grill chef cooked the burgers perfect! Tipped him just for that fact! Very appreciative he prepared my meal. Did I mention they cool on a charcoal grill! You can tell the fryer oil was fresh too. My fries were golden colored, and not tinted like fries cooked in old oil usually look. Onion rings golden brown… SOGOOD! The condiment bar was all fresh, and the crate style seating is awesome! Note: Make sure to bring cash. If you don’t have any no worries, they have an atm inside. HIGHLYRECOMMEND!

Flame broiled burgers a must when your craving some flesh in Tempe. Stopped by a few times to the burger joint and have not been disappointed. Those flame grilled burgers really have a different flavor to them. Anytime to you get a fresh charcoal grilled piece of flesh you’ll never go wrong. Now when you enter the building its kinda a cluster F@@K but once you get your order in its made fresh in front of your eyes. You have a bar to add all your flavors to it. Now that bar is kinda nasty but they maintain it so dong be to freaked out. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the burger experience here if not the In & Out burger is down the street on Rural Road.

The burgers are amazing. I got the John Wayne with hot sauce and it was AMAZING! The hot sauce brings out the flavor without killing the taste with unnecessary heat. I did not order fries, but I did get a pitcher of beer. The beer was ice cold. For a person going there for the first time I would recommend looking at the menu ahead of time. They take orders really quick and you need to be ready to order almost right away. Expect a line, but it moves pretty quickly. They have a toppings bar for your burgers or chicken sandwiches
