After seeing a play at the Antaeus Theatre, we decided to have dinner. It was around 5:00 pm on a very hot Father’s Day, and the restaurant was not yet busy. We were enchanted to enter this place with good air conditioning and damask table cloths. We ordered Carpaccio Di Salmone, Polenta Salsicca e Funghi, Tartara Di Tonno, Bigoli CA’Del Sole, and Zuppa Di Pesce. The food was prepared to perfection with the right balance of salt and flavors. For dessert we ordered Tiramisu, Flourless Chocolate Cake and Cappuccino. By the time we finished our dinner, the place was full. We highly recommend this classic, elegant, with delicious food, Ca Del Sole Restaurant of Toluca Lake.

Popped in last night for happy hour with a friend, we sat outside. Our server was wonderful, she was very busy but still attentive and extremely friendly. We each started with a cocktail and then moved on to the sangria(the red was really good). We tried a few of the bar bites,(meatballs, tuna, calamari) everything was wonderful! I have a feeling that we will be back very soon, great people, great drinks, great food, great atmosphere!!!

During my recent trip to L.A. a colleague of mine reminded me of a wonderful black squid ink linguini dish I had a couple of years ago at Ca Del Sol. It really is a fabulous Dining experience that boasts a gorgeous outdoor sanctuary of tables situated among lovely trees that offer an atmosphere of delightful tranquility. So off I went. I ended up at a quaint table for 1 next to the trunk of an old maple. The waiters were extremely prompt with water, wine and the first course. It would’ve been nice to sit a bit and inhale the atmosphere but my burrata and prosciutto came immediately. I felt more comfortable with my Branzini choice instead of a pasta course as this appetizer was a delectable but somewhat hearty choice. I did consider the caprese given I’m on this«more veggie and less of everything else» diet but to hell with that. The prosciutto, sprinkled with a light oil and balsamic vinaigrette was not too salty or stringy and was complimented perfectly with a textured creamy burrata. My Branzini was light, flakey, not fishy and absolutely delectable. One of the best I’ve had in a long time. They de-boned table side and was thankful for just the very few I found.(Apparently most waiters are all aspiring surgeons. Go figure. It’s LA). I ventured out to sprinkle some olive oil on top and it was absolute heaven. The service was a bit quick and took away from the significance of every bite of my meal. I was in and out in an hour(I stretched it with an after dinner drink and the time it took to type this). All that said I will be back. It’s a great find for me and will be back for sure. It’s worth the extra time burning those calories off at the gym for sure.

I had my baby shower here several months ago and I absolutely loved it. The ambiance is really nice. The décor is a twist on shabby chic and modern. Their patio space is large, relaxing and pretty. My shower was held in their private room which is pretty large and nicely decorated. Service was on point. The wait staff was very attentive and polite. The food is absolutely incredible. I had the pumpkin ravioli which was handmade. The filling was perfectly seasoned and complimented the flavors of the decadent sauce. The eggplant parmesan was some of the best I’ve had. The texture of the eggplant was perfect with a crisp exterior and creamy interior. The sauce was tasty. I couldn’t believe that it was an appetizer because the portion was pretty substantial. You can tell that all the food is fresh and made from scratch. I can’t say enough good things about this restaurant.

I came here for a company event, so we enjoyed a variety of tapas… butterflied shrimp, crab cakes, caprese skewers, meatballs, tuna tartare, chicken skewers, and smoked salmon. Everything was delicious, but for me the crab cakes stole the show! Also, the atmosphere and décor are beautiful, and the outside dining are is wonderful.

BF and I joined a dinner meeting with friends. The location can be easily missed as it’s located in a hidden corner of Cahuenga Blvd. Ambiance: pretty upscale for the Toluca Lake area. A lot of the Studio pple dine here. Servers are extremely attentive. The interior décor has an elegant vibe setting to it. Due to the wall color, feels like I’m dining somewhere in Italy. Food: I’m a fan of everything pasta. I had a hard time deciding on the Agnolotti or the Carbonara. The server suggested that I get a split of both. Totally awesome! So keep that in mind when you have a hard time ordering which dish you want here. BF got the sea bass which tasted fresh out of the seawater. Nicely garnished, simple, and yet so much flavors. We got the Tiramisu for dessert. The only thing I wished was it was made with more liquor or dark rum. Gotta keep the liquor flowing in the system! Parking: Valet

Great, homey, elegant Italian restaurant! Here is what we ordered: FRITTOMISTODIGAMBERONI, CALAMARI E ZUCCHINE — delicious calamari and shrimp MELANZANEALLAPARMIGIANA — probably the best eggplant parmesan I’ve ever had! RAVIOLIDIMANZOALBURROTARTUFATO E PARMIGIANO — delicious pasta, however the quantity was a little less than I had hoped. I finished the entire plate. It’s also a bit too strong with truffle oil, in my opinion GNOCCHIALRAGU‘ DICODADIMANZO — great gnocchi texture, but wish it was a bit more flavorful AGNOLOTTIBURRO E SALVIA — great agnolotti, loved the meat combo inside with veal PAPPARDELLEAGNELLO E PISTACCHI — wonderfully cooked pappardelle Valet parking only for $ 4.50. Definitely make reservations. The interior is nice, almost like a house with several different dining rooms, and a very cute outdoor patio area!

What a hidden gem! Authentic Italian food at its finest! We were with a party of six and I tasted practically everyone’s dish. All were delicious! Love the atmosphere of this place. If the weather permits, request to be seated outside. Nice cozy cabana covered tables that give you your own privacy. Can’t wait to go back!

Went here for my birthday last night, I had the prosciutto wrapped filet mignon and it was to die for. The pink peppercorn sauce was excellent. The sides were served piping hot– the potatoes were very crispy which was nice. Unfortunately they were out of 2 of the specials, one of which we had our hearts set on. My mom got the salmon with horseradish sauce and loved it. It wasn’t the best dish of my life but she really liked it. The spinach was a bit over cooked but had slices of garlic in it that made it tasty. The service was pretty good. I recommend the filet, it had a ton of flavor and was cooked perfectly.

Food is good. Atmosphere was nice. Service is not bad. I would go there again since I have been there many times because one of my friends loves this place. Only complain for me that the bread they serve used to be warm before serving but now is cool. I like when it is warm better.

This place is legit. The location is both convenient and easy to miss — i had been driving by this place for years. They offer valet, which we used, but the neighborhood seemed easy enough to find street parking in. Every step of the way we were impressed. We were seated promptly and waters constantly filled. Everyone from the hostesses to the waitstaff were friendly and accommodating. The bread came with an olive tapenade that reminded me a bit of the chimichurri sauce they serve in Argentinian restaurants, except it’s made with Olives. We really enjoyed the tapenade and the overall ambience — great start of a fine evening. For appetizer we had the calamari. Not only was the squid perfectly cooked, the ultra fluffy breading was exactly how i like it. The basket also came with extras like zucchini and what I’ll dare call an italian version of a samosa. Whatever it was, we enjoyed it quite a bit. Their calamari officially filed under one of the best calamari’s I’ve had in my entire life — no joke. For the main courses we had the lasagna and the lobster spaghetti. The one bite i had of the lasagna sent shivers down my palate. So rich! I could see me getting the lasagna again after hearing the story of how the chef makes it daily from scratch using the same recipe his grandmother taught him. The flavor certainly matched the story so if you haven’t tried it you really should. The lobster spaghetti was served inside of a halved 1lb lobster, meat still on it. The sauce and shrimp chunks blended perfectly with the spaghetti, all of which was slowly marinating a perfectly cooked lobster underneath. I devoured the dish ignoring advice from my already full stomach. The handful of negative reviews here seem the exception, I’m already planning my next visit and could see myself being a regular. Mangiare!

Very nice spacious layout, comfortable for groups and an AWESOME patio. I was here for a work event so I honestly don’t know much about pricing or even selection as we had a set menu but I enjoyed my experience and had a pretty good meal. Food: Crab Cakes: Mini(bitesize)crab cakes fried to perfection: Delicious and perfectly crispy. Meatballs: They where really good, perfectly flavored generously but not overly sauced and served HOT. Probably the best thing I ate all night and I wish I took a togo bag of them for meatball subs the next day. Crostini with goat cheese and pears(maybe poached pear): whatever it was it was weird. Initially by looking at it, we thought it was a poorly constructed yellow tail roll. The cheese was very strong, the pear was unexciting in it’s own right and reminded me of fruit cocktail and the bread was only slightly toasted. Interesting idea poor execution. Main Course: Ribeye, I wanted the Sea Bass but the waiter was adamant on the steak. It was really good, a generous cut seasoned and sauced lightly, and cooked perfectly. Again I’m not sure if these are regular Menu items and it was cooked in bulk so I had very low expectations, but the food I got made me want to go back on a regular full service night. Service: Also pretty great. Some of us got there early and sat on the patio. Our waitress was on top of it for most of the time.(ps they had a ridiculously stocked bar) Things got a little hairy when 40 of us got there, drinks went missing or where forgotten and I had to wait 30 mins for my second beer which was warm by the time I got it. I guess thats bound to happen when the whole company shows up. Otherwise, during dinner I never had an empty glass of water or wine, servers where friendly and on point. Downsides: Valet only: this strikes me as not a cheap place, why go the extra mile to jack us for a few extra bucks. Bar: with such a fully stocked bar their beer selection was lacking. The original waitress only had two options(an IPA and Allagash White) none good. By the time we went to the company event They had the standard 2 – 3 bottles of nothing special, despite being different stuff then the actual bar had.

Had lunch their yesterday and loved it! I had the GNOCCHIALRAGU‘ DICODADIMANZO which was amazing and my daughter had the yummy RIGATONIALLABUTTERA. My husband loved his dish CAPPELLETTIINBRODODICODADIMANZO $ 12.25 petite ravioli filled with braised beef & parmesan cheese, beef consommé. He said it was light but filling and delicious! We loved the olive pesto that came with the breat, so GOOD! We sat on the patio in one of their lovely cabana’s. We will definitely go back again!

I have been here three times now for brunch. I love sitting outside near all the trees. I think it’s a beautiful restaurant. The bellinis are excellent. The last time I went I had the salmon with eggs and it was really difficult to eat because it was so salty. I even had to put ketchup on it to make it edible. I loved the fresh fruit and the potatoes though.

I heard really good things about this place and wanted to try it. Came with a large party but were waiting on the other half, so we went to the bar area. They have a separate bar from the dining room which is nice, you can grab bar bites there too, different menu! The evening didn’t start out the best… Important Note: Don’t EVER order a margarita here, they don’t know how to make it properly. When we started ordering drinks, I asked about a tequila drink on the menu that sounded like a margarita and clearly a drink on the rocks, but he said that wasn’t technically a margarita, and then asked if I wanted a normal Margarita, I said yes and if he can make it flavored. He said sure, we have strawberries, and I agreed, he didn’t ask if I wanted it blended or on the rocks, which normally waiters do but I assumed he knew on the rocks just by me asking about that other drink. When he came over I got a strawberry blended margarita, not my style. When he put down the drink I told him I wanted it on the rocks. He kind of argued with me that all flavored margarita’s are blended and always come that way, which is so incredibly false!!! He look kind of pissed, but I told him he never asked, and I’ve had plenty of margaritas with muddled fruit. He re-made it, and again I tried it and just tasted so awful, didn’t even taste like a margarita. I felt so bad I was just going to suck it up and drink it, but it was probably one of the worst margarita’s I’ve had, tasted like medicine. So I kindly asked the hostess what to do out of not wanting to be rude or confrontational especially because he was the bartender and might feel offended. I was already up there telling her the rest of our party should be arriving shortly anyways since we were waiting. She called over the manager who was really nice about it and joked about it. I appreciated that and he returned it. The bartender was a rude to me the first time I sent back my smoothie and I kind of found him shouting to us and just got a weird vibe from him. I don’t think that was my fault, normally a good bartender will ask, I’ve had so many margarita’s in my life they always ask. Just like having a scotch, you never assume and always ask neat or on the rocks. The fact that he made that an excuse was rude. I’ve had plenty of strawberry margaritas on the rocks with muddled strawberries, tamarind, cucumber jalapeño, blood orange, etc. You name it. Point is, that wasn’t a great start, and just don’t order a margarita from here, you’d think they could make a simple one but it needed soda, lime and a bunch of things. Its like bartending 101. Then when it was time to get seated our waitress leads us outside. Before sitting down I told her when the restaurant called me to confirm the other day I asked to be seated inside. She said that was never noted, but there’s a table inside paying now and you’ll just have to wait a few more minutes if you’d like to do that. Of course I said that’s fine. What is the point of calling to confirm and putting in certain requests. Maybe our table was given to another party since the rest of our party showed up late. That might have been a better excuse before you walked us over, but don’t call me to confirm and say you’ve got that down and we’ll get seated inside. That was just super annoying to me The rest of our experience was better than this. The bread comes with an olive tapenade, it was good, I just prefer to eat it with olive oil so I asked for some. Appetizers: CROSTINIDIFUNGHI E FORMAGGIO(4 stars) — This was a simple and straightforward crostini, nothing life changing but delicious! BURRATACONPROSCIUTTODIPARMA E ZUCCAFRITTA(5 stars) — Now this was very good, my fav thing here. The crispy pumpkin gave it that uniqueness and put if over the top! POLENTA, SALSICCIA E FUNGHI(2 stars) — We sent this back, lacking in flavor and overall not a good dish. MELANZANEALLAPARMIGIANA(4 stars) — I don’t like eggplant, but everyone at our table liked this. CARPACCIODIMANZOCONRUGHETTA E PARMIGIANO(4 stars) — Didn’t get to try this but my uncle said it was very good! Entrees: RIGATONIALLABUTTERA(3 stars) — I ordered this dish, I was so excited about the fact that all the pastas are home-made here. They didn’t have this one special my cousin just had a pappardelle with lamb ragout and mushrooms, so I went for this. I’ve had better pink sauce, and the rigatoni was a tad too thick for me. Overall just an ok dish, bummer! MEZZELUNEDIZUCCABARUCCA(4 stars) — Now the pasta made here was excellent, great flavor, pumpkin was sweet, probably my favorite pasta dish of the night. PAPPARDELLEAGNELLO E PISTACCHI(3 stars) — This again was just ok, I prefer my pasta with a sauce so that was lacking for me. SPECIALRISOTTOWITHCHICKEN&MUSHROOMS(4 stars) — Cooked well, great comfort food. CAPELLINIALLACHECCA(3.5 stars) — Cooked with fresh tomatoes, overall good flavor but I’ve had some basic pasta’s like this with much more flav

I’m so mad that I’ve been living 5 minutes away from this place my whole life and only just dined here today. I’ve literally passed by it endless times and told myself that I needed to come here one day, and today was the day. The hostess walked us to or table, and in moments we were greeted by the extremely pleasant(and knowledgeable) server Jose. He brought out some warm bread and delicious tapenade — so much better than your regular bread and butter that you can get everywhere else. I loved that. I ordered the Gnocchi with Oxtail Ragout — WOW. I was so blown away by this. I think I will see it in my dreams tonight. The gnocchi were not only perfectly shaped but perfectly cooked as well. The texture was exactly like gnocchi should be! No words on the ragout because it left me speechless at how good it was. I had a bite of my dad’s lasagna and it tasted delicious. He said that there wasn’t a single dry or tough spot in the entire piece and how smooth and silky each layer was. The bruschetta needed a little more salt and I couldn’t taste any garlic in it, but everything else was so good that this doesn’t even matter in the end. We need to talk about dessert. I’ve had one too many tiramisus but this one took the cake. I mean the ladyfingers.(haha). The mascarpone layers were so light and airy, almost like a mousse. The ladyfingers weren’t oozing of espresso — every element was perfect. The Panna cotta was honestly lifechanging. Jose recommended it because I couldn’t choose between that or the flourless chocolate cake. I’m glad I listened to him. The ambience and décor is also so nice. It was raining otherwise I would’ve liked to sit in the patio which looked pretty as well. I can’t wait to come back here soon.

Just had a free taste of their rigatoni bolognese at their booth from opening night at the LA Art Show & was blown away. It was so good my friend & I went through the line again for seconds. Ever since our trip to Italy, I have been ruined with authentic Italian food. Lasagna in particular. Every time I had it in Italy I was blown away and now can’t stand the American version of it. Ca Del Sole makes their lasagna like a true Roman restaurant and it was amazing. Thank you Ca Del Sole for staying true to the Italian classic. I especially liked the fried spinach on top, it was a nice addition. Will definitely be coming back here when I need my Italian food fix.

This places has a great happy hour. The dinners are good too but also expensive. There is valet parking in a private lot. The restaurant has 3 areas — one is the bar where the happy hour happens. There are tables here as well as a nice big indoor bar — carved from wood and very ambient. Then there is the regular indoor restaurant and also an outdoor patio where you can get all of the food on the menu. Back a couple of years ago there was a smoking area in the patio but now I think that one has to go out into the parking area to smoke. Now back to the happy hour. Drinks — especially beer and wine are discounted — as well as a nice array of the appetizers and mini versions of some main dishes. Sunday brunch here is decent as well — but the Happy Hour is what puts this place big on the map.

Being an Italian from Boston, I’m so picky with my Italian food. I love it, but I’m super critical– especially of pasta and sauce. What can I say? Ca Del Sole blew me away. It was excellent. For starters, I ordered the Delizie della Casa. The meats were excellent and plentiful: sopressata, prosciutto, mortadella, and cappicolo. I thought there would be more cheese and veggies(and less meat) but was very happy with the quality of what was there. I ordered the Bigoli Ca’ Del Sole and was totally impressed. The homemade pasta was cooked perfectly al dente. The tomato sauce was light and flavorful, but neither sweet nor acidic. The shellfish was just right. The shrimp was super fresh tasting and almost buttery. Amazing! The rest of my party ordered a Chilean sea bass and lentil special, osso buco, and the filet. We also had some Caesar salad and a sampling of desserts– all very good. The service was great and it seemed like there were lots of regulars which is always a good sign. Definitely bookmarking as a place to come to when I’m in LA.

I am a big fan of Ca’ Del Sole! 1. Food is delicious 2. Service is impeccable 3. Environment is great with lovely décor and best of all, IT’S NOTTOOLOUD! I can hear what my friends are saying. What we ordered: To start us off: — Tartara Di Tonno(ahi tuna tartar) — Misticanza Dell’orto Al Balsamico Vecchio(basic mixed salad with balsamic dressing) — Insalata Di Crescione(another basic salad but with pine nuts and lemon-balsamic dressing) To fill us happily: — Mezzelune Di Zucca Barucca(half-moon shaped pasta filled with pumpkin, butter sage sauce, parmesan cheese) — Bigoli Ca’ Del Sole(Venetian style spaghetti with clams, shrimp, mussels, spicy tomato sauce) — Branzino Al Vino Blanco Con Caponata(pan sautéed Mediterranean sea bass with white wine sauce) We also ordered the tiramisu and house-made sorbet. I am not lying when I say that all of us loved everything, from start to finish. I would say the best items were the ahi tuna tartar, the pumpkin-filled pasta, and the spicy seafood pasta. The sorbet was a great finisher as well. For prices, you obviously pay for the environment alongside the prices for quality ingredients. But I think all of it is worth it. Service is impeccable, even the valet guys! Everyone is attentive and respectful. (Except one guy who really didn’t want to take a picture for us LOL I forgive you, sir) I had a great experience here and I will be back :)

What I enjoyed the most about Ca Del Sole was the atmosphere. Don’t mistake me, the food itself is of a very high quality, but I think what I like the most about this restaurant is its natural intimacy. The dining room itself isn’t over the top elaborate, but nice and romantic nonetheless. Pastels are utilized heavily in the color scheme in addition to some rather beautiful art pieces. It has executed the balance of being a nicer, more expensive restaurant with still feeling welcoming and casual. The lounge area and patio areas also have this same feeling of community. This is a place I feel really puts emphasis on making not only the food great, but the experience to match. Our waitress gave us some good recommendations, and was also knowledgable when it came to wine pairings. I had the lasagna, which definitely leaned towards the more authentic Italian taste, than the Americanized version you often find scattered throughout. Portions were also reasonable, and not unnecessarily large. Let’s just put it this way, I came here for my 21st birthday dinner, and would be likely to return.

I was a little skeptical about coming here for lunch with my family because the times I have came here for events, the food was not all that great. We walked into a fairly empty restaurant and were seated inside by the fireplace. The ambiance was very warm and cozy, and they already had Christmas decorations up. Our server was very friendly and so were the other waiters, who checked up on us frequently. My water glass was always full. We ordered the calamari and also asked for some bread. The tapenade that came with the bread was amazing! I could not stop eating it. The calamari was also very good, and came with shrimp, zucchini, and some type of fried vegetable potsticker sort of thing. The combination was interesting and complimented the calamari well. As for the main course, I split the pumpkin ravioli with my mom. Eating it made me feel all warm and cozy. It tasted like the holidays. Five stars for that! And for dessert, I ordered the flourless chocolate cake which was mouthwatering. Wonderful experience here. Great food, friendly staff, and a nice looking restaurant overall. It is the perfect place to come for a romantic date or just a casual meal.

Super yums! Came here for a Sunday birthday brunch at 11 a.m. The parking lot, though spacious, is valet only, so if you don’t want to fork over the $ 3.75, there are plenty of parking meters along the street. We sat on the patio in one of the cabanas for six people. The service was excellent, and the food was delicious! I had the crab cakes with bearnaise sauce on the poached eggs with english muffin. It comes with a side of potatoes and fruit — because I was allergic to the fresh fruit provided, they swapped it out(for no cost!) for steamed spinach with garlic. The coffee was excellent, the bellini was excellent(and comes with two complimentary refills!), and the atmosphere is perfect. Their lunch/dinner menu looked excellent, so I am definitely going to be back for their dinner as well! Their Sunday brunch was perfection.

I came with a group of friends for DineLA just to catch up with each other’s lives. This restaurant offers valet parking. Even though I made a reservation and came on time we still had to wait 15 minutes to be seated. They directed us to wait in the bar area and we thought it was pretty cool albeit tiny. You can choose to sit inside or outside – I would recommend sitting outside because the vibes are much better outside. We ordered from the DineLA menu and tried to get different things so we can share and try everything. First of all, the complementary bread here is amazing! The bread was dense and toasty. It comes with this tapenade(olive) spread – ugh, too yums(the waiter had to refill our bread twice LOL). For appetizer we got Chicken Liver Mousse, Caprese Salad, and Salmon Tartare, The Salmon Tartare was delicious! But the Chicken Liver Mousse and Caprese Salad was subpar. I feel like the portions here are huge but the quality of the dish itself is not that great. For the main course we got Salmon and some Pastas. The Salmon was cooked inside a plastic bag. When the waiter served it he cut open the bag in front of us. My friend said she didn’t enjoy this because salmon is supposed to be crispy, but this was way too soft and breaks apart easily looking like cat food drenched in soup. The vegetables that come inside the bag are amazing though, because it soaked in all the juices of the salmon. I thought the pastas were delicious! Like I said, this place mirrors traditional Italian restaurants and thus serve huge portions(although the price is still very reasonable) – I had to take half of my pasta home, which I’m not complaining because more for me the next day: D Overall I think this place is average because although the portions are nice and big the quality of the food doesn’t really meet my expectations. I prefer smaller portions but amazing quality.

The wait staff was amazing so I wish I could give them 5 stars separately. It was a big gathering and they did not want to break up the bill which was annoying since most of us wanted to use credit cards. The food was average and overpriced. The drinks were TOTALLY overpriced! $ 9 for a SMALL sangria??? $ 14 for a Martini??? I won’t be going back.

I LOVED Ca Del Sole! I’ve been dying to try this place for years, but never got around to it. I finally went this past weekend, and was so happy I finally got to try it! The place was so cute, with indoor and outdoor seating! I got their special of the day which was shrimp and pea risotto. My boyfriend’s sister and niece got the spaghetti Bolognese and a ceasar salad which we shared. Everything was so delicious! Including the appetizer bread which they provide. The service was so great. I would happily come again!

Had business to attend to in North Hollywood in the evening so to kill two birds with one stone, I called up Ca’ del Sole to get a table, but the next open table was for 8:45pm, but I was told the bar was totally open for dinner, walk ins only which was fine by me. In my experience when I dine alone some of my best experiences were at the bar under the wing & care of a competent bartender. Well, I lucked out in being able to be helped by the head bartender, Francisco, who is a long time veteran dating at least back to the early 1990’s at Harry’s Bar in Century City which tried to imitate the iconic Harry’s Bar in Venice, Italy. I remember the Century City Harry’s Bar for its most wonderful dessert called Meringata a la Fiorentina which was two thick layers of airy, crispy meringue sandwiching a thick layer of luscious Crème Anglaise filled with candied almonds. I did the DineLA menu which ran for $ 40, but opted for two dishes that require a supplement of $ 6& $ 10: 1) Capesante al Porto e Porri was 3 plump divers scallops in a demi glacé-like heavy, sweetish port wine sauce with lightly battered & fried leeks. The capesante were not over-cooked so retained a soft yet meaty texture with a sweet oceanic undertone. The finely sliced leek was coated with a thin layer of corn starch batter which came out crisp & light. Unfortunately, the port sauce was a bit too sweet & heavy and over-powered a seafood as delicate as scallops. Perhaps a lighter Champagne or Chardonnay sauce would have been more of an ideal fit. 2) Petto d’Anatra all’ Espresso was breast of grilled Muscovy duck which was impressively thick & meaty cooked to medium which worked since the meat was so thick that medium rare would have made the meat a bit too tough to cut easily. Swiss Chard was sautéed, but the heat was apparently so hot that it scorched the leaves for a slightly smoky taste possibly to be in concert with the espresso sauce. Caramelized white onions topped the mound of the Swiss chard like snow on top of a mountain peak. The espresso sauce was so generously spooned onto the dish that the Swiss chard soaked it up for a sweet effect throughout which to me was overkill. Maybe the espresso sauce in a small sauce dish to apply to only the duck would have been better so that the Swiss Chard would have acted as a palate cleanser to the meatiness of the duck. 1 – 2) All the above was paired to Valpolicella(vahl poh lee cheh lah), a red wine from the Veneto region. Usually it tends to be more jammy with strong dark fruits such as brandied cherries, blackberries, black plum with mild tannins & low acid. My Valpolicella was different in that it had a bit more acidity to give a more cleansing effect after eating the Capesante with the port sauce & Anatra with the espresso sauce, and was a good choice in that it was a mellower wine that stood up to the heavier tasting sauces. 3) Bigne dello Chef was equivalent to French Profiterole & our«cream puff». Instead of a Crème Chantilly filling/whipped cream, it was filled with a rather mild, bland Crème Patisserie filling similar to our custard. A dab of chocolate chaud-froid sauce was smeared on top of the pâté a choux pastry shell. This was a really boring, insipid dessert so I asked Francisco if there were Banyuls or a Port that would pair & enliven the Bigne(bean yeh). Francisco turned this whole flavourless dessert around by suggesting that I pair it with Gioia(gee oh ee ah) Limoncello Crème which is made in Sorrento, Italia. It’s an analog to Bailey’s Irish Cream, but not so thick & viscous. The lemon flavor is similar to a Meyer lemon which has soft rounded, mellow orange-like citrus notes, and the light cream enriches & gives a more mouth & tongue coating pleasantness. The rich dairy, citrus zest flavours really augmented to the creaminess of the Bigne’s crème patisserie saving this dessert from an ignoble fate of being thrown into the trash. I would give this DineLa dinner a 3 Unilocal rating, but under the supervision & assistance of the master Bartender, Francisco who saved this dining event from becoming mediocre, I would like to up it one star. FYI: However, as pleasant as wine pairings can be, the one glass of Valpolicella & Limoncello Crème with the supplements did raise the basic $ 40 DineLA to $ 102 by the time tax & tip of 20% are included.
