Phil’s Fish Grill

So I have been to this place twice; the first time on accident because I thought I made an order here but actually did for California Fish Grill. The second (today) made me wish I had just stuck with going back there instead of here.
I called in my order to go a half an hour ahead of time, said my name and spelled it out, the guy took my order and said 20 minutes.
I got there and it’s busy because $ 2 taco Tuesday. First problem, they don’t separate the lines from To Go and walk in orders. So you will have to wait in line no matter what. I get to the front and the lady asks if I had a to go order, I said yes and told her my name. She looked around at the other orders and asked «Ricky?» No. My name is Nikki. «The burritos?» No. Three tacos. Finally she found it. Rings me up, total is $ 7.43. I hand her a $ 20. She gives me $ 8 in singles and a dime as my change. I laughed, you’ve got to be kidding me. I kindly tell her she gave me the wrong amount of change. She laughs and returns to the register then proceeded to scramble to figure out the correct change. She gave me the new amount of change… She was still off by a dollar and wrong amount of spare change but by then I was so annoyed that I just left.
So I have a shout out for management, having «nice» employees isn’t everything for a successful business. Hire those with common sense and basic math skills, or at least give them a calculator!
The chicken and shrimp tacos were good, the Mahi Mahi was VERY fishy.
This place needs to get it together.

Extremely expensive! My single meal came out to almost 20 $ and it didn’t even come with a drink. Totally not worth the money. California fish grill is right down the street and they don’t charge a penny more for garlic butter and they have way better flavor.

Went for a quick dinner and the customer service is not the greatest. The hostess almost seemed annoyed that we walked in and the lay out is strange to place an order. I got a bowl with white fish with garlic butter. It is a good portion but the garlic butter was not the greatest. The fish rice and zucchini were good but I would recommend the garlic butter sauce. I would have tried to come again to try something else but the customer service was enough to not want to come back.

2.2.16 Ahhh. Taco Tuesday. Got 2 carne asada, mahi-​mahi, and tilapia. Checked in and I got a free battered fish taco! Great!
Fish taco was fresh and I love the slaw with it. Sauces on the side so good to pick what you want. Carne asada was tasty.
Service was fast, orders checked and handed with a smile. A good fix to a hungry me!

I went here for Taco Tuesday today — $ 2 tacos FTW! I got a swai, mahi mahi, and tilapia. All of them came with a good amount of fish, which was all very flavorful. The cabbage slaw on top was also great and plentiful. The salsa bar was sufficient and pretty fresh. Overall, the food was pretty good; however, my only dislike was that the corn tortilla was extremely thick and overpowering. I ended up only finishing 1.5 tortillas because it was just too much.
Although this place is busy (I’m not sure if it’s because it was Taco Tuesday or if it’s just because it’s across the street from Harbor-​UCLA Medical Center; therefore it was full of hospital employees on lunch), the service is very fast. You get ringed up quickly, the employees are nice, and they bring your food out within minutes. The location is convenient (with plenty of parking). They also deliver (I think $ 15 minimum). There are also daily specials, so check those out! The fish plates look pretty good, so I’ll definitely be back to try them.

I go to this place for lunch on occasion and it never disappoints. The salmon salad is delicious, the shrimp pasta is really good for a fast food place.
The shrimp tacos are awesome too.

Today I was introduced to the salmon salad, its safe to say it was delicious ! Well seasoned salmon, not a chewy, overcooked texture. Looooved the fruits drizzled in it like the apples was just right and cranberries put the cherry on top! Would you think 5 stars would be the rate? Yes. Hahaha ding ding. Hope you enjoy your meal!

I probably order from Phil’s at least three times a week while at work, and I am never disappointed. I always order delivery the girls are always nice and helpful. My orders are always correct and the delivery times are great. I’ve tried a lot on their menu and I’ve liked everything as of yet. Lol

3.5 stars. I used to come here a lot for lunch, when they weren’t as busy yet. Over time their business definitely went up, which is great for them. Service is always amazing, literally there hasn’t been a single time during which I received poor or questionable service.
My go-​to is the grilled tilapia plate with garlic butter or cajun butter and brown rice. In my opinion the fish is a bit on the oily side, but the portion is generous. Not a big fan of the pasta here. I’d order the clam chowder and poke with chips sometimes, even though those were only okay to me.

This is my first time here! I had the Grilled Chicken in a soft taco. It had a delightful balance among the meat, the carb and veggies with cajun seasoning and sour cream. I have to say that it was delicious, even though I don’t normally eat this kind of cuisine.
The Unilocal offer of a free fish taco was also neat. Keep swimming, Phil’s Fish Grill!

This place is right by my house, and while they do some things on their menu very well, their service is far from the best. Pros:
1. Their fried items, especially Fish N Chips, Shrimp, ect are done very nicely and are very yummy. I’ve had several dishes and their fried choices are by far the best. Fattening though!
2. Fish tacos are yummy, although too much sauce for my tastes.
3. Fries are thin and cooked perfectly, however they are usually cold when I get them home.
Cons:
1. Their coleslaw is terrible. Sorry but it’s true. Way too much mayo.
2. Too much sauce on their tacos, to the point of it being overwhelming. Now, if you like not being able to taste your meat in your tacos, it’s fine. But I personally like the taste, so I do appreciate the overdose of «white sauce».
3. Their order takers, while being very young, are also very ignorant of their own menu. And whenever I call for delivery they put me on hold to look up my address. I live about 8 blocks away! They need to be trained on the area and taught about the menu before you put them on the phones, because they can never answer ANY of my questions and sound in general like they don’t know what they are talking about. Last night’s order is a good example of this, when I asked for sour cream I was told I would be given «white sauce, «but the kid on the phone couldn’t tell me exactly what the white sauce was. I wanted sour cream! Also, he forgot to ask me what I wanted to drink, and therefore I didn’t get any drinks to speak of, even though it was included in the meal. :/​
4. Don’t get delivery. The food is always cold whenever it comes to me, and again– I live about 8 – 9 blocks away! I can’t imagine how cold it would be to someone who lived further.
5. They need a healthier selection of beverages besides soda. How about some juice or even better tea? You can’t really market yourself as a healthy option if you don’t have any healthy drink choices.
I am going to avoid this place, despite the close proximity.

This place is a joke lol. Today we asked if we could have some lemon and they said no, it’s too expensive so they only have lime instead. Wtf! You guys are selling sea food and refuse to buy a bag of lemons!!! Lol seriously, how else do you guys cut corners??? ANYWAYS, this is truly disgusting. I go to wash my hands and see a sign that state DO NOT FLUSH SEAT COVERS. Omg I almost puked right then and there. So they want anyone going to the bathroom to use the seat cover then pick up the seat cover with ur feces on it and throw it in the trash? That’s seriously disgusting.

Well. Definately not when you are trying ot order the day before to give them a head start.
These people just missed out on a $ 400 order. I tried to call today (Monday) to place an order for QTY 40 Grilled Shrimp Taco lunch plates for Tuesday. He pretty much refused to take my order. First he said, call back tomorrow around 11 and then he tells me he can’t make me 40 lunches and that I would have to order trays. I cannot order trays for my own reasons, this is why I requested 40 lunches. How is that for doing business???

This was my Second online order. A little bit disappointing this time. Ordered the surf and turf got a few pieces of turf (steak) and a couple of large NOT giants surfs (shrimp). My bread was the size of of a meatball and it looked broken or bit off. Not taking a chance with that so it goes in the trash. I received my extra small ‘extra’ sauce that i was charged a whole $dollar for. So for $ 17 I expected a little more. This ordering experience will not stop me from going back but i will never order an expensive plate again. You don’t get your moneys worth at all! Oh i also ordered a cup of chowder for another $ 2.99 my total bill was $ 19 and change. The chowder was worth $ 2.99 the sale price for Fridays but you need razor sharp teeth to chew the clams.. i probably wouldn’t order it again. I’ve had better at sizzler but the broth itself was still tasty! … in a $ 2.99 ish way. Delivery was earlier then asked for. the driver was nice and pleasant. everything was hot and well packaged. even my fountain soda was well packaged so it didn’t spill. For this updated review I will not deduct any stars for my dissatisfaction! «This time» at least.

Quick delivery. Order was correct. The menu is full of fun options. I have every intention of keeping the restaurant as a bookmark. Looking forward to this food again.
$ 13.99 Surf N’Turf. Juicy, tender Carne, Jumbo Butterfly shrimp and lots of mixed veggies on a soft bed of jasmine rice. Um, so good. Sooo, gooood.

Their grilled chicken salad is DELICIOUS and plentiful. I suggest calling in your order when on your way because I came a little before linch hour and it was still already a line that moves extremely slow.

I love the sauce so much! The swai plates will allow choice of different sauces (sauteed mushroom is good, too); yet, this is a good go-​to dish for me!

Food: fish salad was meh. Fish was a generous serving, but salad leaves were dry and did not appear all that fresh, and consisted simply of chopped lettuce leaves, with a smattering of onions and tomatoes.
Service: very pleased with their delivery service. Free delivery with a minimum order of $ 10, which is definitely cheaper than most places, and arrived 15 minutes prior to the scheduled delivery time.
Would definitely be willing to try this place again, but probably wouldn’t get their salads again.

This is a great place for a quick and tasty bite to eat, especially if you work across the street at the Harbor hospital. I lucked out and happened to come in on a Tuesday, when the fish tacos are $ 2 each :) I went with the grilled shrimp, which was SO YUMMY. Like the kind where I’m making «mmm, oohh, wow» noises with every bite. The shrimp was seasoned really well, and it was complemented nicely by the creamy white sauce and garlic butter, and the crispy cabbage added a textural contrast. I only wanted a snack that day so 1 was perfect; for a whole meal, I probably would have ordered 3 or the combo plate that has 2 tacos with rice and beans.
My husband is a fan of the salmon burrito, which I haven’t tried yet… Guess I need to come back!

Far from perfect, but they make up for their flaws and are a solid 3.5-stars.
Plusses: Good-​tasting food. Friendly and fast-​ish service. Convenient location.
Cons: Confusing front counter set-​up. Minor order mess-​ups (sides not included, etc.). Portions seem small when compared to similar casual seafood restaurants.
