Impressive little rest area. The only drawback is no vending that I could find. Parking area clean and even had an attendant working it when I pulled up. Both cars and trucks are welcome. The restroom worked, were clean and updated. A really nice picnic area is in the rear. Brochures for local attractions are available. This has been a must stop when traveling thru the area and end up being around 1.5 from my home and a stretch break.

Another Virginia Department of Transportation Rest Area on Interstate 81(I-81) Southbound, just North of Troutville, VA. I should note that there are signs on the Interstate prior to each Rest Area — signifying that Geico is sponsoring the Rest Area. As I recall, this occurred a few years ago after most Rest Areas were cut out of the State budget. Thus the Commonwealth worked out a sponsorship deal and gave the sponsor some advertising credit. The Troutville Safety Rest Area is located at Mile Marker 158 South. As with the other Rest Areas I experienced on this trip, it was clean and well maintained; a welcome respite for bathroom facilities, vending machines, stretching the legs, resting, etc. Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Amenities include: handicapped accessible, telephones, including phones for the hearing impaired, picnic area with grills, vending machines, and a pet rest area.
