Tuckerton Seaport

The Tuckerton Seaport is a nice option for a weekend stroll through downtown Tuckerton. The little shops are neat and they often have events on the weekend. The Bayman’s Museum is a nice stop as well. Plenty of parking.

I went to the decoy show yesterday. The vendors were, for the most part, friendly. A lot of decoys to see and other hunting stuff. Although, I was looking for a ball cap and there were only a few available, not ones that said the decoy show, just standard stuff one could find in any sporting goods store (priced a bit higher) I did the seafood tent this time, standard fries and scallops (5 for ten bucks-​fries I think were another 2.00) –all the cans of soda were a 1.00. Not bad for a mart. It was quieter than last year, but it was still worth the trip. Parking was tight, but I found a spot right away free. The church there has a table at the front, used to be a few cookies for a quarter or .50 for a brownie, now, everything was a dollar… dollar for two cookies, dollar for this or that, I got a can of soda, a dollar. Seriously, Dollar Tree is the best place to go before hitting this place and bring your own snacks.
Stopped in the seaport museum. Was okay. Staff was busy doing their thing talking, not much new gear to look at. No choice of hats either, a few scattered here and there. I was in there outa there in five minutes. If you are in the area and want to stop at the decoy show, it is fun, but I don’t think I will drive the 70 miles next year.

As a previous reviewer stated there are parts of the Seaport which have not yet been repaired from Hurricane Sandy. I haven’t explored the entire facility as I only had a short amount of time. It does seem like there are some pretty cool things to do. The main museum has a gift shop and a bunch to read about local maritime history. On the lower floor there are more interactive exhibits. When I was there they had a horse shoe crab that you could touch as well as baby horseshoe crabs in a tank. I have uploaded pictures. All the staff here were extremely helpful and willing to answer an questions I had. At some point I would like to go back and fully explore all the exhibits the Tuckerton Seaport has to offer. At that time I will update my review.

This is a nice, low-​key museum that is fine for kids & adults to learn a bit about the historical maritime aspects of the southern NJ coast. Some of the buildings on the property were badly damaged by Sandy, and have not yet recovered, but there is still enough to see & do to keep you busy for an hour or so. Some of the displays and interactive exhibits in the main building are pretty cool, and are geared to keep young & old entertained, while you learn. I am guessing it gets busy here on summer weekends, but the Sat in April I was here with my GF there were only a few other people around, so we had the place pretty much to ourselves.
It’s a nice, off-​the-​beaten-​path kind of place to visit, assuming you don’t expect the same level of amenities or high tech learning that you might find in a Phila or NYC museum. Admission is $ 8 for adults.

Attended «Haunted Seaport» in 2013 and it was a blast! Great place for kids, but had a geat time as adults. The event was well-​organized, save for some obviously-​unavoidable waiting in lines. What a great place!

Do you have nothing else to do? This might be a consideration for spending your time. I would advise, however, you confirm you have absolutely nothing else to do. I visited during the 2013 Lighthouse Challenge, and I was disappointed because the replica lighthouse paled in comparison to the others. In general, this site lacked authenticity and seemed expensive.

Out of all of the places that we visited for the Lighthouse Challenge this place wins the turd prize for being well… the biggest turd/​waste of time.
First off the parking lot of the Seaport was horribly jammed, not from people coming for the Lighthouse, because of some type of an event that was going on at the same time. Supposedly there is an admission charge for the lighthouse by thankfully at least when we were there no one was around to enforce it.
The lighthouse here is obviously not original as the original was knocked into the Atlantic during a major storm in 1927 (
) and along with that most of Tucker’s Island.
The current reproduction was built in 2000 and has a lovely view of Pohatcong Lake but that is not exactly anywhere near (more than six miles inland from the original) the ocean so you really have to use your imagination here big time.
I mean I guess everything here would equal out to a nice place to visit for a day during an even of some type but my initial impression is that this place has no charm and is no more than a man made tourist trap along the lines of «Historic» Smithville.
If you choose to come and climb this one it has 42 steps at a height of fifty feet.

I volunteered here quite a bit and I know first hand that they have a lot to offer. The summer that I helped out I was stationed mostly in the surf museum. I haven’t seen the brand new one they built yet but the original one was awesome, tons of vintage boards and lots of bright colors, appropriate music– I’ll bet the new one is even better.
In the summertime there is so much going on every weekend. You can go to a Red Wine and Blues festival one weekend and a Bluegrass and Oyster shindig the next. They have lots of vendors on festival days with a variety of amazing things to purchase, a lot hand made and beautiful. It’s never expensive to get in and always a ton of fun. I attended quite a few events such as a silent auction which had so much cool stuff to buy. There is a lot of folk art going on there and the carvings are always amazing. You can even take classes there!
I’ve seen movies on an inflatable outdoor projector screen there and I’ve seen the place completely transformed for absolutely beautiful weddings and even a really hip bar area. There’s a stage where local musicians play and they are always awesome. You can bring your kids any day to see the turtles and horseshoe crabs and tour the «boardwalk» which has all different kinds of historical little stops along the way. New Jersey is rich with folk art and history so whether you’re artsy or a beach bum you should DEFINITELY check it out.

Fun place to bring the kids, BBQ, bluegrass band out back, interesting history. Feels like you are in Another place and not NJ.

Pretty interesting place to visit if you are interested in local history, surfing, boats, the local oystering and clamming industry and how it works, folk art and crafts, or duck hunting and duck decoys. general admission is $ 8, good place to bring kids probably. there are several historic buildings containing various museums or displays, including a couple actual bird decoy carving workshops and a building in which small wooden boats are made, sometimes you can watch people working. there is also a short nature trail through the woods… there is a museum about surfing and surfing in NJ which i was eager to check out, but it was closed temporarily due to some construction going on. much of this is outside, so better to visit on a day when weather is OK — as walking around the area is a major part of the appeal. I enjoyed my visit, but I am kind of a history buff and found all the stuff here pretty interesting.
