One of the places that I wanted to go on every Sat morning but always little too far and to late for me to go there. French toast was so good! I mean it almost as good as my own creation… just kidding…:)) For the few times I went there I had always leave happy and well fed. Just wish it can be little closer to the house. I shall try their Phở next time.

Son’s is wonderful! An authentic family business with the world’s friendliest owner, manager and chef, Son. I bring my kids for breakfast but almost always end up getting the chicken curry for myself instead. Son is an excellent baker as well — breads, pastries, cakes made to order — & my kids are constantly asking to go.

I’ve eaten lunch there a number of times. the Baked goods are fresh, the sandwiches are packed and reasonable. The Phở(soup) tastes as it did in Vietnam.(He will modify the Phở as you like it i.e. I like it with hot chills so he adds some for me.) He will also add an egg roll to the soup if you wish. Its novel and good! Food is fresh and home made on the spot. A true hi in these days of prepackaged everything this is cooked for you not nuked. !

Son works hard to make sure all diners are not only well fed, but entertained. All baked items, including the burger bun, are made in-house, and all meat is low-fat and fabulous. Son will tell you what’s available as a side, and the tortellini salad is creamy pesto chilled yumminess. The breakfast menu is unbelievably cheap and the portions trucker-sized plentiful. Beware, Son closes for lunch promptly at 2:00pm. He closes the curtains and ignores door knocks even at 2:05. Son does phở that is spicier than HaLong Bay, and the Vietnamese soup is also richer. Sure, the little blue tables don’t provide compelling ambience, but Son will regale you with philosophical bon mots that more than make up for décor deficiencies.

Little hole in the wall next to Big 5 sports supplies. Can’t vouch for the western sandwiches, but the best phở in town: 1) best broth, 2) leaner meat, 3) son will customize. I prefer to have sprouts and basil on the side, and Son adds them all in. But it’s a tiny place and he’s friendly and he’ll do it anyway you like. Ambiance is … Tacky diner style. Who cares? Will update after I try his sandwiches. Update: French toast excellent due to fluffy homemade bread. Egg roll, nothing special and too greasy.

Just discovered this place! The French toast and biscuits and gravy are fantastic. Homemade baked goods all the way. Come eat here before they close. Son only has a year left on his lease then he’s calling it quits. Get it while you can!

I had the pastrami sandwich & my husband had the tuna melt. Both were absolutely wonderful! This was our first visit & we will certainly be back for more. Only downside what that we arrived shortly before close & would love to have gotten a loaf of the homemade rye bread. Great little friendly place.

For me this place is all about the French Toast when it comes to the food. Simple yet flavorful with the right amount of gooey goodness. Made with Son’s house baked bread it is a real treat. It really doesn’t even need syrup. I love this stuff. Aside from that, the next biggest draw is Son himself and his lovely family. On my first visit another patron was asking Son about how business was in these hard economic times. His reply«People who live for money will never be happy.» He went on to explain that he operates his restaurant because he loves the interaction with the people and he loves to cook and bake. If he can make enough money to support his family while doing what he loves then life is good. How refreshing! This guy knows why he does what he does. I knew at that point that this place deserves my patronage. It is obvious that there are a lot of regulars that come here. People come in to eat and chat with Son about how they finally found a job, give an update on their health issues and a myriad of other personal subjects. Why? Because in this day of personal autonomy and self-serving attitudes, Son takes the time to show genuine concern for his patrons. The breakfast options are limited, but I always order French Toast so who cares if there aren’t any omelets on the menu. Take note and opt for the home fries over the hash browns. The hash browns are actually the preformed frozen patties. I’ll admit this makes me cry a little inside. The home fries are made from scratch so it wouldn’t be that hard to shred some potatoes. The only sandwich I’ve eaten is the Tuna Melt which was rather tasty. No complaints there and the use of his house made bread kicks it up a notch. The fries, while an additional charge, were yummy and cooked perfectly. On my most recent visit 2 tables of patrons began debating over their favorite sandwiches. The California BLT and Egg Salad are tops on their lists so maybe I’ll take a cue from them next time I’m willing to forgo the French Toast. Lastly the pastries are really quite good. Fresh, authentically home baked flavors(baked with love mind you) that are worth the calories. I’m definitely going to give his cakes a try the next time I’m in need of one.

I love this adorable little breakfast spot. The owner talked our ears off, but he was pretty inspirational. It was nice to see such a hard worker who still takes time to meet customers. We loved the delicious menu items. We left with a bag of pastries and homemade bread to take home to share with the kids. What a great find! tip: try the french toast. it was amazing! We will be back many times!

This place was a real treat when we arrived in Tucson and started looking for good food at reasonable prices. The owners do all the bread and pastries in house and they are excellent. We had pastrami on home made rye and the bread was soooo good… A bear claw for dessert was flavorful and very large so we could share one. An added bit of fun was a man who helps out in the restaurant and is also an artist who has his work hanging in Son’s He has a collection of dramatic southwestern pieces that are hauntingly beautiful. The prices are right and one will be purchased for my home before I leave Tucson. This place is fun and comfortable for a good bite to eat as well as some good conversation with the owners and the artist in house…

I’m so bummed. A friend and I went to Son’s Bakery this past week, because I had such a great experience the first time. It was strange at first, because they seemed to be out of everything she wanted. Lemonade, root beer, and even turkey for a sandwich. We both decided on the veggie(which is what I had last time), with a few modifications. The sandwiches came, but without the modifications. They had stuff on that we asked to be «held» and no cheese whereas it had been ordered specially. We made our own modifications and dug in. Immediately, we looked at each other. The bread was stale. Like, really stale. We had ordered different types of bread, so they came from two different loaves. They started crumbling immediately and had that stale taste that is unmistakable. Beyond that, the veggies were bland. We got up to pay and Son had left for a delivery, which is fine, except that no one else knew how to work the cash register. We ended up estimating the total, paying in cash, since they couldn’t accept the Visa, and leaving disappointed. I’m really sad about this. As you can tell from my last review, I really really liked Son’s.

Been to Son’s twice. I was not terribly impressed on the first visit, so I waited to review until after my second visit. Sadly, the second visit was not much more successful than the first. High points: 1. The bread — homemade and very tasty. 2. Son — even though it was only the second time I had ever been there, he remembered me. I think that alone will keep me going back. That, and the fact that I still want to try one of his Vietnamese dishes and egg rolls. Mid points: The food — overall was just OK. Had a Reuben on the first visit. Had WAY too much sauerkraut in it. I pulled about half of it out. Breakfast was second visit. I had biscuits and gravy with ham and eggs. While it was good it did not blow me away. Minor quibbles(just me being picky): Menu Selection — quite a few choices for lunch but the breakfast menu seems fairly limited. Pricing — first visit was a friend and me. We each ordered a sandwich. The menu says you can add fries for $ 2 or you can get a large basket of fries for $ 3. We opted to split the large basket of fries. We were taking food back for a co-worker. We ordered his sandwich with fries, which I assumed would be $ 2 since it was just a side. I was charged $ 3. I am not a total cheapskate, but first of all, I don’t like being charged extra for fries and, further, $ 2 – 3 for fries seems like a lot. I do plan to go back as, even though this place is close to work and home, we just discovered it. It seems this place could be special, if not for the food, for the people.

I have been going to Son’s for oh, maybe three or four years now. Sadly, I don’t get there as often as I would like. But when I do, Son always remembers me, even if it’s been months since my last visit! And he knows if I bring someone new with me, too. He makes everyone feel like you’re entering his own home for a meal! Lucky for me, I was able to go last Friday for lunch. Usually, I’m there for breakfast, which is always amazing! You can’t beat Son’s fresh baked breads! This time, I decided to try the Reuben and I am so glad that I did… it was THE best Reuben I’ve had maybe ever! The meat was tender and juicy, the sauerkraut was piled high and Son makes his own dressing to top it off. And did I mention the fresh baked bread? I had to use a fork to eat most of it, it was so messy and wonderful! As a side, I chose the Chicken Mein Salad — heavenly! I don’t know what all he puts in it — those curly, ramen-y noodles, chunks of perfectly seasoned chicken breast, veggies, cilantro and WOW! De-LISH! My friend Susan had Son’s Phở Bo(Vietnamese Beef Soup) and two egg rolls. I tasted both and that’s what I’m getting next time! Best egg rolls in town — fresh, juicy and perfectly flaky. I’ve never had a bad meal at Son’s! Susan’s husband, Ray, ordered breakfast which he said was wonderful and he loved the bread so much, he took a loaf home, too! A few words about Son himself… he’s a joy, to say the least! So warm and friendly. I went with my mom for breakfast on my birthday a couple of years ago. Well, when Son found out it was my birthday, he told me my meal was on him. Then he proceeded to wrap up a ‘goodie bag’ to go, also on the house, which included a fresh baked loaf of bread and several pastries. All of which were incredible!(Thanks again, Son!) We also heard Son’s life story about his escape from Vietnam… ask him, if you’d like to know. Most likely, he’ll sit down at your table and tell you, too. On this most recent visit, Son told us that business has been down, He said that he’s trying to negotiate his rent and he may not be able to continue when his lease expires. He told me ‘please, tell all your friends to come in!’ I said that I tell everyone about his place. I’m hoping this little review will help Son in some way… he truly loves what he does, he loves people and it shows in his food and his warm-hearted welcome when you walk in the door. This place is a dive. Who doesn’t love little hole in the wall restaurants though? Yesterday morning, my daughter and I stopped in there real quick because we did not want to go grocery shopping while starving! You know what the leads to a bunch of junk food in the cart! We stopped in Son’s Bakery I wasn’t expecting much to be honest due to being on a low carb diet. So we walked in the décor was horrific but definitely my kind of place. Up towards the front counter they have all this homemade bread just sitting there. Luring me in… then I see the waitress take a loaf down slice it and hand it to the cook(the owner, Son) for him to cook up. My mouth started watering. My daughter and I sit down she gets two slices of french toast with nice thin slices of butter on top. I order a typical breakfast two eggs over medium, a sausage link, and two slices of homemade whole wheat toast. I had coffee my daughter had orange juice. We were sitting there and I took a bite of bread-it is heaven. So we got out an envelope from my purse and started taking notes-we looked at each other and said we have to WRITE a review. This place is great. So here is what we wrote and please remember my daughter is 13 and we did this together! The interior was unexpected with paint everywhere and art everywhere. Kind of cute kind of cluttered get what we’re saying? They have a great fusion of food the owner is Vietnamese so traditional vietnamese foods along with great American food who can complain? Lots of low carb options which makes me happy! :) Servers are nice & attentive plus they check each other’s tables they really work as a team! Eggs were cooked perfectly not overly greasy thank god! The sausage was fresh and amazing-my daughter was amused that it was so big. My daughter noticed that everyone was leaving happy always a good sign! So things that I always notice is the restroom-I hate disgusting restrooms HATEHATEHATE! So here is the deal the restroom was clean thank god again. Plus they have seat covers I’m sorry but that is so unsanitary to not have seat covers. Here is the great part the total for both of us was only $ 9.25 which is RIDICULOUS! I was so happy I even suggested going there again because I want my fiancé to go! I think this may be a tradition place to go how can you not like homemade bread and such! I am excited to try other things on their menu since we only did breakfast. Will definitely try more and let everyone know. Remember this place is a dive like little diner so this is a place to go for when you are in the mood for that kind of atmosphere. Definitely a keeper in our book!

Does homemade bread put a little zip in your step? Can you discern a qualitative difference between an egg sandwich made on pre-fab bread vs one made on homemade bread? Yes to both? Then Son’s may be a place you’ll appreciate, although it’s probably not for everyone. If you’re looking to support a local business that’s pouring some love into their product, give Son’s a whirl. Their biscuits are wonderful, the rye is subtle, the bear claws are Gi-normous and delicious — and your cup of coffee with never be cold. Don’t wait for the check, they’ll never bring it – just walk up to the counter and settle up. I should confess that my review is a bit swayed by details that may be meaningless to others. For example I admire that Son’s has stayed in business for 7 years now, even through this lousy economy. I love that the plates aren’t white and that the coffee cups have flared sides and the creamer comes in a stainless steel pot instead of a disposable plastic cup. And that BLUE! The walls and counters are painted that same electric blue that my mother uses to paint anything in her home which has displayed a need for a coat of paint. These are the homey touches and hometown vibe that keep me coming back to Son’s.

Nothing special here but standard breakfast fare. The pancakes tasted a lot like my moms, the egg sandwhich was ace(how can you mess that up, really?) and the sourdough bread was pretty amazing. We stopped on our way to climb at Mt. Lemmon to fuel up and it fit the bill both cheaply and with home made goodies. It isn’t worth the drive, but if this is your ‘hood, I’d eat here every once in a while. The man who runs the joint is a talkative Vietnamese man who clearly works hard for his fortune. He doesn’t, however, ever drive to Mt. Lemmon to hike. I can tell you that.
