City of Tybee Island

Three friends and I rode to Tybee from Hilton Head on our motorcycles. We circled block after block to find parking. We finally found a spot on 17^th street, grey legal spot, no meter, no do not park signs, so we parked. We returned about an hour later only to find 4 tickets on our bikes. I called the parking services and spoke to a rep the next day and she informed me that there are parking kiosks that you have to pay into and obtain a receipt and put it on your vehicle. Well, guess what? There are no kiosks on 17^th street. She even readily admitted that there are some «areas» that do not have kiosks and informed me that you may have to go to another street to find one! We have been to Tybee before and were also ticketed so we were very careful where to park. We had no knowledge of these kiosks and I told the rep of this. She then informed that there is a sign as you enter Tybee telling the public of the parking procedures. Sorry, must have missed that sign due to me paying attention to riding a motorcycle in traffic! Like I said, this is not the first time that we have been unjustly ticketed in Tybee, but it will be the last! This town must make a fortune on parking fees and tickets. Do yourself a favor and skip going to Tybee. Try another island that doesn’t charge for parking because they want visitors to enjoy and return another time.

My first (and last) trip to Tybee was a disaster. Couldn’t get to the Pavilion because of traffic so we drove to the area around the lighthouse. Finally found a place to park, paid for parking, walked to the beach and came back 30 mins later to find a $ 35.00 parking ticket on the car for no reason. We then drove over to city hall (had to pay for parking again). The supervisor of parking services dismissed the fee and advised us their officers are «only human».
Just too many people in too small an area for me. Also, parking services apparently needs money, and it’s yours they want.
I’ll never go again!!!

I had a nice time visiting Tybee Island. It’s a 45min drive from Savannah, GA. The island is tiny and consists of one main strip with shops and restaurants. The people were friendly, though most were tourists. Parking meters are everywhere, so be sure to follow the parking rules. Tybee is a cute destination for a day trip. It doesn’t compare to the beaches in Florida, but it still worth a trip.

Don’t come here if you have a dog or even if you just like dogs. There’s a miles-​long bike path along the north coast, made from an old railroad bed: No dogs allowed. The shoreline runs two-​thirds of the way around the island: No dogs allowed, any time. On the quiet streets in the off-​season, they’ll slap a $ 200 fine on you if your dog is off the leash– even if he is walking quietly beside you. Tybee Island is friendly to drunks and college kids, cats and natives, but not retired snowbirds with dogs.
We moved on to a place in Florida where part of the beach is designated dog-​friendly. There are trash cans and signs reminding people to pick up after their dogs. Dogs can play frisbee on the beach. The atmosphere was so inviting after Tybee that we left our rental weeks before it was due to expire. Again: Don’t come here if you have a dog.

way too crowded, beach was full of radios and drinkers and illegal aliens, no parking at all, they take advantage of tourists, i would never go back, if you looking for a nice tranquil beach this is not the place, i thought it being a island it would be remote and quiet, had a bunch of illegal aliens put a tent up on beach right in front of us, this only beach around if u live near Savannah so its crowded, costs 20 $ to park a day at condo, the beach is like 40 feet wide, save your money and go elsewhere,

We decided to go into Tybee in order to check out the beach and it was a mistake. Being from Florida, we had high expectations that were not met. The water did not look inviting and neither did the beach. The traffic was a nightmare, its one way in and one way out so leaving Tybee proved to be a challenge. Parking is non existent and overpriced. The only thing we enjoyed seeing was the Lighthouse. Next time we will skip Tybee and head to SC.

Quaint is the word I like. A nice seaside community, quiet and clean.
They have lots of shops and restaurants that we will have to go to next time we are here. Beaches are easily accessible and parking plentiful.

When will Tybee finally clean it’s self up? Too expensive to park for such a small place. It’s cheaper to park in Daytona !! Beaches had trash water is dirty due to the marsh and river I get that. No dogs allowed anywhere on the beach. Come on Tybee it’s 2014 people take there dogs everywhere ! Just go a little further south to St. Simmons Island much better overall experience.

I’m withholding a star only because I haven’t had a full Tybee experience yet. I was visiting my fiancé in Savannah this past week and we made two trips to Tybee. It was my first time visiting, and I was sure glad I had a jacket and scarf with me!
The Visitor’s Center was easy to find on the main road coming into town and had a large selection of pamplets, maps, and booklets. The gal there informed me of free admission at Fort Pulaski during President’s Day weekend, and showed me some wedding vendor pamphlets for my upcoming nuptials in Savannah or Tybee.
We stopped by what I imagine is the main beach area by the pier. Even in February there were people playing on the beach, swimming in the water, and tossing around a volleyball. There were some tourist shops open near the beach, but the majority were on the main road coming into town. Tybee was quiet and peaceful, but I’m sure it picks up much more once the weather warms.
I’ll be moving to Savannah later this year and expect to visit Tybee quite frequently during the warmer months. I’m most excited to rent a bicycle and see more of the island!

I really enjoyed my time here at Tybee Island. 2013 was my first trip here and I’ll definitely be back. Tybee Island is the neatest lil small town feel and the beach was not Grade A of the world but for what it is… i really, really enjoyed it! It sucks that you can’t have pets on the beach and it’s one of the first beaches where i’ve seen such a rule but overall I had a really nice time. If you’re in Georgia and want a nice little get away then most definitely check out Tybee Island. They also have great food around here!

I too have travelled the world and seen all kinds of beaches. I have never experienced the peace that Tybee Time brings, the friendliness of people, the joy of riding a bike everywhere, the diversity of beach bars and all close to the history and diversity of downtown Savannah only 20 min away. I have been back now three times and will continue my visits!

Tybee Island is like any other beach town, but was far as the beach itself, as someone from the islands, I wasn’t impressed. The water was black and my niece got stung by a jellyfish but I will say we got to enjoy some fun in the sun and other must have too because the beach was packed with people.

One cannot say the word Tybee without smiling. Love it and can’t wait to get back!

Island = Speedo Time!!! Cool Island! Fantastic South Beach Peninsula, where at low-​tide you can see «Little Tybee Island» with the cool looking streams of fog and some people said if you ventured out at just the right time you could walk across though you would not make it back, not walking, they say the waters are too Dangerous and you would not have time before the tide rises enough… Do NOT doubt that people have been killed by these rough waters (you can camp out on Little Tybee Island though with many restrictions because it is a Wildlife Refuge!
South Tybee Island Beach was a point of interest to me (not because of Speedo Time) because I knew the treacherous waters common with Peninsula (people have been killed by these currents… Check my photos… we were surprised how well the conditions showed in our photos and how violent this area is compared to the waves just Meter away!
My Wife wanted to go to the Mountains for our Honeymoon I brought her here (and Savannah) surprisingly (to you) she said «Good Pick»!
Parking… Pay the Meter or Pay the Piper! Pay the Meter! Put the Receipt on your Dash in view… She is out here enforcing with a Vengeance, a Vengeance beyond Speedo!!! The Nice part of Paying the meter you can use it on the T I South Beach or any other spot on the Island where Metered parking is enforced!
Reminds me of Galveston Island (Texas) without a tan and the song «All my ex’s live in Texas», Bars, more Bars, and Beach Shops everything you need for the Beach except…
A Beach like this totally Devoid of Speedos??? By «Speedos» I mean what almost anyone would imagine… «Old School» Men’s competitive swimwear (a skimpy weene bikini for a Male)… I have my share! Still I LOVE to shop and I love Unilocal lists, when the first shop did not have any I wanted to see if any did… Each «Beach Shop» that we visited (which were all that were open, which were ALL on Tybee Island) No one carried the coveted by some, hated by some, «speedo-​style» swimwear! Nor did any guys on the beach wear any — still not bored with Board shorts… Fashion ALWAYS comes back, I’m NOT waiting! Neither have I been waiting so far! _​_​_​_​—-_​_​_​It was the off-​season! Still perfect weather for January 12, 2013 for Beach goers!

From the first time I came here, over 15 years ago, Tybee Island greeted me with an overwhelming feeling of peace. I am proud to call it home.
When I drive over the first bridge from Thunderbolt and the smell of salt water tickles at my nose, all my stress melts away.
This little piece of heaven may only be 2 miles long but it is truly magical.
Counting down the days until we meet again…

Summary:
Just because it is a beach and has a lighthouse does not mean it is the best place on earth. It is a subpar beach on a subpar island.

Tybee Island has a special place in my heart because it is the first place I ever stepped foot into the Atlantic Ocean. I’m from the Northwest and have never seen the Atlantic before so I got to Tybee Island I knew I had to get wet. The beaches were beautiful and clean but the water was cold. It wasn’t the summer but this is probably my only trip to the Atlantic I would have for a very long time. The entire island is beautiful, the only thing that I can say bad about this place is it does resemble a touristy town. Also it is very hard to find good parking spot.

Me and my friends came here to go to the beach and it wasn’t all that great. Finding parking was a hassle. They also didn’t have real changing areas. The biggest killer for me was no public shower, which made it a huge inconvenience when leaving a beach in you have sand in your nether regions.
The beach itself was ok. Nothing to really boast about. I will not visit this beach again, I’ll just go to Hilton Head where it’s a lot cleaner.

We loved it so much we bought a condo. Get down there about every other weekend.
The special events like Mardi Gras, turtle release, etc just add to the charm.

A lot has changed since the last time I visited. It’s picked up really well! New condos, hotels and miscellaneous businesses (beach gift shops and what have you) have bloomed in the area. The pier is even better than what I remembered and I was told that Orange Crush stopped a couple of years ago (a little sad about that but ok).
My family and I sat at the lifeguard tower (sans lifeguard of course since it was late in the day) and just took in the afternoon to evening atmosphere. The moon was full and everyone had a lot of fun.
