I’ve driven past Soares Ranch many times, but never stopped by… until last weekend. The boy&I were coming back from grocery shopping, when I saw that they were open and made him do a U-Turn and pull over into their little dirt lot. The owner greeted us with a smile, and told us to look around. I guess it was their«soft opening» of the season, so there were just a few veggies to choose from, but we grabbed a few bell peppers. The veggies are so… bright&colorful! You don’t see this type of coloring from the supermarket, for sure! We told the owner that we loved the smell of fresh vegetables and such, and he said that he normally had some basil out too, and asked if we wanted some. We were planning on making pizza, so we jumped on that opportunity! He grabbed handfulls, and when we asked how much they would be, he said, «Oh, I haven’t even priced them yet! Just take it!» Super nice of him :) And the basil smelled SO good. I’ve never smelled anything like it [even from the basil plants they sell at Trader Joes]. It’s cash only, and prices are a liitttle high [and everything is super tempting], but hey — it’s from a local ranch, so no complaints from me. I’m willing to pay a little extra for awesome quality produce [and herbs].

I lived in the apartments near this ranch for a couple years when I was just a little kid. My dad used to jokingly lie to me by saying that the guy who owns this ranch was my real father. Ha ha ha. Anyways, it’s a good place to stop by and buy some freshly-grown crops. Kind of weird to have a ranch in the middle of the suburbs, although it’s still nice to have something different like that in Union City.

Another hidden gem in Union City that I just discovered right here on busy Alvarado Niles Rd. I don’t know why I’ve never noticed it before. Check it out for freshly-picked white corn, huge beefsteak tomatoes, various varieties of squash, green beans, and cucumbers. That is what was out for sale today. All the produce is grown and cultivated on-site. See the pics I took of part of his farm. I highly recommend it, and the owner is very nice and pleasant. (Cash only)
