Hip Hop Fish and Chicken

It is what it is. Hip-​Hop Fish and Chicken is a Chicago-​based chain (apparently) that now has outlets all over the South, too. The emphasis is on fried fish and fried chicken and not a whole lot else, and the style of preparation comes from the Southern foodways of soul food with ample influence of course also from Chicago. Their stores – at least those I’ve seen – are often not in the very best of neighborhoods and kinda run-​down in appearance. The food is what you’d expect, and it can be pretty good when fresh and if they didn’t make it too greasy. Or it can be lukewarm and tough if it was fried some time ago and sat around, which apparently can happen and is a complaint with the Lake City location as well. The staff at this location (Valdosta) I found to overall be sweet and not rude at all, but they seemed a bit bored. I suggest either the fried chicken or the whiting – whiting is a fish you won’t see at high-​end restaurants hardly ever but has long been a staple of soul food seafood and isn’t a bad fish at all when fried. Give it a shot.

BAD BAD BAD SERVICE! I love their food. But for the last time. We will not go back! We work 6 mins away and get a 30 min lunch break. Drove in the drive thru ordered two specials for $ 5.99. We waited a few mins then we’re told to pull up and they would bring it to us. At 12:25 I went in the store asking about my food. Then at 12:30 my husband parked the truck and came in also. The Very Rude cashiers said if we wanted our food fresh we should wait for it Or call in ahead! FOR DRIVE THRU! Both cashiers were Obese and ratchet looking we got our money back. Sadly this happens a lot at this location. These girls don’t care about how they appear at work or customer service. Maybe Hip Hop will catch on and replace them instead of losing more customers.

This is some damn good chicken. Good livers and gizzards too. Good fries, too.
Portion sizes are awesome too, you will not leave hungry!
Location is very small and cramped for parking and dining in. The drive thru basically blocks the entire building.

This place is okay… not the greatest but does the job. The drive thru needs a bit of work and the wait times are long. Not bad overall but leaves much to be desired.

Food is hit or miss. Go in one time and get big portions that are fresh and hot, go in another time and it’s greasy stuff that’s been sitting under a heat lamp.
Service is also hit or miss. Sometimes you’re greeted with a smile, other times it’s an attitude that they’re mad you showed up to make them work. Truthfully for what they charge you’re dang near better off going to a «sit down» restaurant but maybe that’s just me.

Don’t like fried chicken as it’s always greasy, well this chicken is the best I’ve ever had. Moist, tender, just a nice light breading on it. I was shocked at how good it was. Will for sure be back. Great hush puppies too…

Hip Hop chicken is great! Large portions, good prices, delicious fried meals. Feel good food served up hot and fast. Friendly staff and cute building. Open late!

If your only object is to get huge amounts of greasy chicken fingers with huge amounts of greasy french fries, with service with an attitude, then go here. By service with an attitude, I mean if you are caucasian, the people who work here act like they don’t care if you get waited on or not, and they don’t care if you come here or not. We probably won’t be back. The fish tastes very fishy. The chicken fingers were okay, but way too much for us to eat. The seating area is very small & cramped feeling.

This place shocked me. I went and ordered chicken fingers expecting something at best the size of Zaxby’s strips but… At the window we were handed a baking pan full if huge breast size chicken strips with fries. Everything here seems to be in massive size. Great for feeding large groups or for having extra! Oh and it’s open rather late which can be a life saver.
