Some people like spicy some people love it. Not everyone understands the difference, when making/eating sushi, between adding sriracha to call it «spicy» or cutting up a pepper or their house made sauce etc. Yagumo does. The different items used to create the spicy, and levels of spice are what set their spicy rolls apart from the rest. Whether you want a casual spicy level no. 4 or so to a habanero infused no.7 or(higher) the flavors you get when made by Ronny and them is incomparable to most anywhere you get a spicy roll. Not to say others aren’t good, but most aren’t as all around tasty and spicy. Rather than chopping up a jalapeño or chili of their choice and adding sriracha, Ronny will use a few different things such as powder, a oil etc to achieve a a spice that touches more of the senses and all while tasting great and fresh. Non-spicy Blue Crab Hand rolls are super tasty, lobster cut roll is very nice too. The albacore sushi always top notch along with other nigiri and sashimi cuts. The albacore hand roll is always a favorite. Located in a tiny strip mall in Van Nuys, a nice find if you’ve never been. Enjoy!

The plaza is a little«different» looking but the place inside was cozy. Pleasant and personable chefs and fresh fish. I like the idea of different levels of spicy. I preferred the ninja hand roll to the cut rolls flavor wise. The tempura ice cream and oyster shooter were a miss for me. I am interested in going back for lunch and sampling more of the hand rolls, and giving the nigiri and sashimi a try. Currently, I wouldn’t make this my go to.

Great sushi place, hidden in a strip mall. Always try to stop in when I come to LA. Sushi is good, esp. Albacore, spicy tuna hand roll and the other specialties. Never will be brave enough to try #10 spicy hand roll, but covet the t-short!

The owner/chef was very pleasant and helpful. Their spicy hand rolls are really good and I love that you can actually get them spicy if you want to(level 5 and 6 were perfect). The service was a little slow but overall it was okay and not too expensive.

We LOVE Yagumo! They give us great service and the food is delicious. For the price point, you just can’t beat it. Because we go there regularly, they always remember our drink orders without us even having to ask and they take great care of us. The spicy numbers vary by chef, sometimes a 7 is spicy enough and sometimes a 4 is too spicy. But seriously, we love all of the spicy selections, even my kids love spicy #2 level and I love it a bit spicier. I highly recommend the Spicy Scallop roll and the Spicy Ninja Roll. My kids also love the Spicy Tuna Crunch roll. All of the Nigiri is prepared well and fresh. Again, for the price point, you won’t do better.

The chefs or whatever you call the men behind the bar cutting up fish were all friendly and attentive. The food what little I had was good. My friend really enjoyed it. The hostess slash waitress was a little well she needs to learn the rule of not reaching over people’s food and not to assume because there is very little on a plate that you don’t want it. My friend had to take a plate back from the woman. Other than that and the horrible parking it’s not too bad of a place. Side note not a good date place it’s too well it’s not all that fancy so old stable couples yes new and first daters definitely not.

Honestly, I’m a huge sushi lover and a very open minded person when it comes to food. BUT this was absolutely horrible. We really tried to like it. Like REALLY tried to give this place a chance but, no… Just no. I can’t even. Never again will I come here. Also, if I could request a server who actually knows about the menu, that’d be great too. This is the most I can give for a review.

Yagumo is a really really good Sushi place! My wife and I love this place. Their food is really good. The place is small and from outside doesn’t look like much but when they bring your plates, that’s what matters!

Been a fan since I moved back in my old neighborhood and appreciated the kind of people who come to this place with no pretensions what a good sushi is when commenters complained about the décor and the proprietor/sushi chef is not Japanese but they order rolls instead of nigiri sushi. I had two of friends tried the no. #10 challenge and one who is Indian said this was the hottest thing he has ever eaten and I know I can’t eat his type of food because it’s too spicy hot. He got drunk when he did the challenge and crash in the backseat of my car after that episode. Favorite of mine is the Ono sushi which is not on the menu and keep telling people you should try it because the preparation is different from most sushi joints and it taste so good. I tried to go check out different sushi joints along Ventura Blvd. for many years but always come back to Yagumo because it close to home. You don’t have to listen to shallow people talking about themselves and get ticketed because the parking situation is forgiving than Ventura Blvd. Odelay!

I cannot imagine how this place has 4 stars. My 1 star is being kind, only because the server lady took her time to greet us. Let’s start with the menu itself — disgustingly sticky and dingy. Clearly it has not been cleaned in maybe a year. The maroon table cloths probably have not been washed in months. There were dried sauce and food particles on the exposed parts of the cloth that touch the diner. The Special Cali Roll with Baked Scallops and Jalapeño Poppers took 40 minutes to come to the table. Neither the scallops nor tuna inside the jalapeño were fresh. Both had the trademark fishy taste of a non-fresh seafood. The tuna was definitely frozen and mushed together, similar to ground meat. The Squid Legs(aka calamari) lacked flavor — it was all about the spicy mayo to carry the flavorless squid. But hey, at least it was edible! Even the calamari took 15 minutes to come to the table. The #5 spicy shrimp roll was ok. The heat was good, but the inside was these sad looking mini shrimps engulfed in mayonaisse again. The pink soy paper was not fresh either. It took some forcing to keep the soy paper wrapped together! Overall, this place left a lot to be desired. It is a far cry from the Ventura strip sushi establishments. Where I thought this was going to be a hidden gem in a sketchy part of Van Nuys, it should be left buried instead! Btw, nothing authentic about a sushi joint being cooked and run by Indians(Hindi). No offense to them, but sushi should be left to the Japanese. Want great sushi? Go for Octopus Japanese Fusion in Encino or one of the many awesome places with kicking Happy Hours on the strip. Stuck in the Van Nuys area? — just head on over to Woodman and Roscoe’s Sakura. It is a $ 1 difference from this joke of a place and well worth the $ 1.

The food here is pretty good. There’s not a lot of choices in Van Nuys, but I like this place. Something about it makes me come back. I keep going back because of the tasty spicy tuna and spicy salmon hand rolls, and some other menu items I like. They use a special mixture of spices that taste distinctive compared to other sushi restaurants. You have to try the spicy tuna hand roll level 5 first. About the restaurant itself, there’s a curtain that hits your head when you walk in. Lighting is a little too dark.

:(I feel bad for everyone who works here – they seem to be trying very hard, but the quality of the sushi was pretty bad. We had the nigiri – salmon, yellowtail, ikura, tuna, sweet shrimp, and only the shrimp was fresh. I wouldn’t come back here for the fish. The only good thing about this place is that it is cheap. Sorry.

Excellent. I live so so close to this place but didn’t know it was there. Now I know why they have such great reviews. From the admesphere to the food and friendly staff. Love the GRABMYCRUNCH plate. Now I want to come back at night because it looks like it’s a fun place to be with the karaōke and their content. Highly recommended! !

BYFARMYFAVORITESUSHIPLACE!!! The quality, flavors, personnel and prices are incomparable! I literally cannot enjoy sushi anywhere else anymore! I’ve been coming here for about ten years and I cannot get enough. This place is mostly known for their spicy tuna handroll challenge(which I have tried), but there is so much more to this place! It’s a little hole in the wall gem. The prices are great simply because they are. Not due to the quality of fish(it’s great) or the lack of regulars customers. I’m almost afraid to write this review and it become too popular. What I normally order and highly recommend: Albacore, yellowtail, halibut, sea bass, sand uni(2 pieces of sushi for $ 3.50!)(except the uni) The«Ninja» roll cut on soy paper The best«Red Dragon» roll If ever in doubt sit at the sushi bar and ask what they recommend. Everything they make is amazing!

Oh, ninja handrolls… how do I love thee?! Let me count the ways… Level 1, Level 2, Level 3! I seriously LOVE spicy food… so I need to try Level 4&5 next time I’m here. This place is a hole-in-the-wall kinda place with a big surprise — they have really good food. It’s in a seedy little plaza/strip mall but if you blink you might miss it while driving through ghetto Van Nuys.(Yah, I can say that because I live in Van Nuys. LOL) I came here on a Sunday night and the parking lot is small. There is plenty of street parking if your okay with walking. Don’t worry… It’s a busy street area so you’re safe. Hahaha :) Most of their sushi rolls are $ 7.95 which is good for my cheap ass. :) They don’t have an extensively huge sushi menu but there’s definitely enough to choose from. Here’s our order: — Lobster Roll: $ 12.95 It was good but came with 8 really small pieces. — Red Dragon Roll: $ 9.95 Good and definitely worth the price. — Ninja Handroll: $ 3.50 They don’t tell you what kind of fish because it’s a secret, but that’s fine because I loved it anyways. I doubt you’ll see me trying their spicy food challenge but I will definitely try upper levels next time. LOL ;) — Spicy Salmon Handroll: $ 3.50 Yummy. Not as spicy as I would like but still good. — Dynamite in a shell: I loved the portion and presentation and the flavor was good, but I was weirded out by the rice which I thought I was gonna be okay with. Yah, not my fave. Oh, well… at least I tried it. I took a star off for really slow service. They were nice but they should really have more staff especially when the restaurant was full. I think there was like one waitress for all the tables. Plus, we were trying to compare spice levels with her and she wasn’t sure how hot the handrolls were. Level 3 was more like Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, not level 1. LOL I would still love to come back. It’s a 5minute drive from my house! I would really love to see someone do the ninja handroll challenge. You get a t-shirt, if you win. And I’ll be there to cheer you on. LOL :)
