Stopping here, I learned to never trust a fast-food restaurant that is attached to gas station. This BK is located just of the inter-change of Interstate 70 in Vandalia. I needed gas to make it home, so I stopped at this BP to fill up. I skipped lunch and I was getting hungry at 5PM. After filling my car with gas, I thought I’d grab a light bite to satisfy me till I got home. I had a couple of choices, I can pull forward from the gas pump into a parking space and eat at this BK. Or, I could make a right turn out of the station lot and go to Wendy’s or Arby’s which were right next door. I choose convenience, big mistake. I ordered off the value menu; cheeseburger, value fry and a small soda. The soda cost more then the cheeseburger. Keep in mind there was only one senior couple in a booth waiting for their food and me in the entire restaurant. I placed my order, got no thank-you and waited for my order. That is where the entertainment began. The whole time I was waiting the one young lady of the four working was on a rant. I don’t think she realized everyone could her. The order for the senior couple was ready and she called it out. The sweet couple did not move — this is a very small BK — 6 booths and tables tops. Instead of walking it over to them, the young lady yelled out — «This has to yours, you’re the only ones here». The man got up and retrieved their order — again no thank-you from the young lady. My order was ready shortly after theirs and she was still on her rant. She did not miss a beat as she bagged mine and kept ranting. She didn’t even call my out, I was standing right at the counter, so she stuck her arm straight out and said, «Here». I thanked her and told her to have a nice day. As I turned to leave, her last rant was priceless — «We wouldn’t have to work this hard if we had more help.» They must of been really busy earlier in the day, because at this moment in time, they were dead. My fries tasted funky(so I only ate a few), the cheeseburger just okay for $ 1 and the diet Coke was cold and refreshing. If they were working hard, my fast-food may have tasted a little better. After stopping at the former Illinois state house to photograph it and the Madonna of the Trail, it was time to eat breakfast or lunch or both. I walked into the Burger King attached to the convenience store and filling station. Coming from U.S. 40, it seemed a long way, but it’s very near an I-70 exit. An enthusiastic person greeted me, and I asked whether they were serving breakfast or lunch – I was still on eastern time, which would have made it almost noon. She replied both, and she explained the fish combo and the 2 for $ 5.00 deals. Excellent. I ordered the fish combo and it was ready very quickly. After filling my cup, I went to look for a place to sit. Ewwww, many of the tables were messy, as though they hadn’t even been wiped since they opened in the morning. I found a table that looked okay, but when I sat and looked more closely, it looked as it hadn’t been cleaned since the store opened. I tried to keep everything on the tray liner and hope that it was safe. The fish filet looked very brown as though it was overcooked, but it tasted fine. They also managed to not add tartar sauce, as requested. The fries looked kind of bad, but they tasted fine. If the workers had as much enthusiasm for the dining room, as they do greeting customers, they’d have a much better store.
