Love this place! Surf magazines while I waited. Masao gives an awesome cut and the shop is a friendly place. The building is covered in murals and in an awesome location right near the boardwalk in Venice. Good price, great work, and a taste of true Venice.

This place is awesome! I really wanted to do something cool and unique with my hair as I grew it out and knew walking in that this was the right place. I went in to have the lower half of my hair shaved with a design shaved in.(See the pic! With the heart mural background). Masao was fun to talk to, super welcoming and also TALENTED. Love having this piece of art on my head :) The shop has such a relaxed and creative vibe. Definitely a Venicw staple. I’ll be back in soon as this grows out to try something else!

Been coming here forever. Love this place. Atmosphere is great, people know their stuff Masao is awesome. While Snapchat and Silicon Beach skyrocket the property value with their boring brand of white bread hipsterdom, Paper Scissors Rock is a Venice icon that hasn’t changed a lick. Long may it wave its freak flag.

I really don’t like to give this kind of bad review about hair salons, but this is by far the worst haircut I have received since I was 12 years old. I asked for a bob, I said«please make sure that whatever bob it is, it doesn’t look like a helmet» it does. «Will do it chin level» it isn’t. Its much shorter. Curly haired girls, please be aware that they will butcher your hair. The stylist did exactly what I DIDNOT want. I tried to be positive about it but after being told by my husband I looked like the lady scientist from«The Incredibles» I knew how BAD it was. Now, I have to wait for at least three months to get even remotely close to what I actually wanted to have, feeling super ugly all the way. I can’t in good conscience recommend this place to anyone.

Since I live in Orange County, it’s not always easy to get to Venice for a haircut but Paper Scissors Rock is worth it. Masao does an amazing job every time. He has cut, highlighted, colored, styled and everything else to my hair over the years. Recently, I decided go for something new and put some funky color in. I wouldn’t have picked anyone else for it. I told Masao that I wanted purple. He suggested adding a few more colors for pop since I wanted a look totally different than I’ve ever had before. I am so glad that he did! Trusting his vision got me an amazing color job that I have gotten compliments on from so many people, family, friends, coworkers, even strangers. Aside from the work that is always excellent, the shop is in an awesome location, has a cool old school Venice vibe and free parking(are you kidding me — that’s like gold!). Definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for an awesome cut and color at a shop with a super awesome feel.

Paper Scissors Rock rocks! I’ve been going to Masao for years since I moved to Venice, he always gives me badass haircuts and super cool to chat with during the cut. I’ve seen awesome variety too from my choppy cut(I’m regularly asked who cuts it) to awesome color, styles for chicks hair and even dreads. Masao has all the skills.

Masao is the man. Great cut, prideful in his work, good conversation. My new spot to get a cut while in LA.

Frankie has been doing my hair for years. No matter what state it is in when I get there she can always work wonders and make me happy! Color, cut or style she can turn a mess into great looking hair. The Jell-O shots don’t hurt either

Nicole and Staff are the best hosts and make me feel right at home with refreshments like ice cold water. Nicole is the best hair stylist I know and keeps me looking fresh and presentable.

Nicole Nicole Nicole. She was great and I have no complaints what so ever about the final outcome of my hair. It’s gorgeous and ladies if you have longggg thick hair I definitely recommend Nicole! The two stars knocked off are for something that stayed with me and really got under my skin. 1st star off– smoking cigarettes right before you see a new client is just a pet peeve of mine. Not a fan of the cancer sticks. 2nd– I kept getting price tags shoved down my throat. Admittedly I’m 22 with a baby face and a high pitched voice that makes me seem younger than I am. But I still know how to tip accordingly. My boyfriend had given me a gift certificate to PSR for Christmas(thanks babe), but I knew I would have to pay a little more to get exactly what I wanted plus gratuity. So I get there at 11 and leave around 2:30ish. And, I kid you not, I was reminded of the price I would be paying extra to Nicole about 7times during my hair coloring. Didn’t appreciate the patronizing comments about money. It wasn’t very welcoming to a first timer.

I almost never post to Unilocal so you know that when I do, and give 5 stars, it has to be good… :) I’m newer to LA and had been dreading finding someone new to cut and color my hair. After some research I made an appointment with Nicole at PSR and I couldn’t be happier with my experience! I was making a major change in length and color, and Nicole sat down with me and really talked to me about what I wanted. She asked a ton of questions — some were questions I didn’t even know I had! I’m so glad she took the time to really understand what I wanted, because the end result was nothing short of amazing. I may or may not have received awkward looks on my way home as I stopped in just about every window to try and catch a glimpse of my reflection and check out my awesome hair. ;) Seriously though, this place is the best. Friendly people, chill atmosphere, reasonable prices, outstanding stylists, great location. Thanks Nicole you rock!

Overall, pretty good experience! Niki Rae is the person to go to for punky colors– I mean she has hot pink hair herself! I went in looking for a midnight-navy blue color. I love how it turned out! However, had I known I would have to come back within 2 weeks and only 2 hair washes, I might’ve considered doing it myself. My hair started fading to a purple color, which still looks good but I feel like I myself could have gone go get the manic panic color and dyed my hair myself had I known I would have to be back so soon. Niki Rae called me back when I left her a message explaining the situation and she said to come on in. She also gave me tips and products if I wanted to do it myself. Overall fair, and fair pricing. I got some bleaching done and had the all over blue with a cut for 175. Great vibe and cool people!

Niki Rae is the best I’ve ever worked with for edgy yet feminine styles, and vivid colors beyond the«normal» spectrum that last and that really work with the client’s own style. I wanted pink, I got a whole lot more. Niki you rule. See the photos I uploaded here! –Xeni

My son will only go to Nikki. She does amazing«surfer/skater» boy cuts that aren’t dorky(I’m quoting). We love the cool, inviting, interesting atmosphere. Highly recommend.

I just went on my lunch break and have to admit I was a bit skeptical. I admittedly can be a snob. But I needed my dead ends removed and a bit of weight lifted and I only had this lunch break, so who cares. I have thick wavy hair… most people would love it but it is hard to manage and even harder to find someone to cut it without me instantly wanting to cry. BUT to my surprise Nicole knocked it out of the park. She was so attentive, and took the time to explain her process and how she wanted to cut my hair which I actually really appreciated. She listened to me, my concerns, kept asking me if things were ok through out the cut. She never once pressured me to do it her way or took liberties. For someone who is so particular it was perfect. They were all so nice and welcoming, plus relatively inexpensive. I have friends who cut my hair at their homes and still charge me $ 70. Highly recommended.

I absolutely love Paper Scissors Rock! I’ve been getting my hair cut by Deb, the owner, for about 8 years. She always gives me a great haircut and it really lasts. Deb knows what to do with thick, curly hair and always makes me feel good about my hair. I love that Deb is honest about when I need to come back in for a trim or another cut and that she loves my curls as much as I do(I think she’s the first hair stylist I’ve been to that hasn’t spent the appointment trying to convince me to straighten my hair). The salon has great prices and a Venice beach vibe. I haven’t had my hair cut or styled by anyone else in the salon, but I’ve seen other people leaving them with great hair and I’ve definitely seen some impressive color and styles by the other stylists. Masao is awesome with dreads, crazy cool cuts, and interesting styles. There is salon parking behind the building. They use excellent, quality products on your hair. I love the Moroccan Oil brand Deb uses to style my hair and will splurge on a bottle of it. Sometimes I’m lucky and can book an appointment right away, but if you have a big event you’re planning on or want a cut on a very specific day, I would book well in advance. Deb is the best and I will definitely continue to get my hair cut and styled here!
