Almost took the food back. just too nice a person. Ordered pull pork not sure what i got and my wife ordered ribs too salty to eat. i am 70 years old and have eaten many places and this was in the top of the worst food. Saturday night ran out of turkey, brisket and chicken. My wife said the best thing about the place was the tea.

So we visited this location after church service to get some good Bbq. It was a little difficult finding the location with gps but once we found it, we went in and we were greeted as soon as we came in. There was an expansive menu on the wall and we selected the rib plate, the Westerner sandwich and the smoked turkey sandwich kids meal. Big plus is that kids eat free on Sunday. The Westerner we built was pulled pork with spicy cheese sausage and my hubby said it was good but definitely needed sauce to add some flavor. Now, the ribs were ‘fall off the bone’ but they were a bit dry, nice smokey flavor but dry. The Mac n cheese left something to be desired, but the fries were really good. The turkey sandwich was ok as well but the portion size is on the tiny side. The highlight was the free ice cream! It was so creamy and good. I would visit again but probably get something other than the ribs. Oh and the spicy Bbq sauce was so good, I even dipped my roll in it!

I’ve had their barbecue but didn’t get around to writing a review. Probably because I wasn’t impressed enough to put effort into a review for the place. I wish I would have the first time around. My second visit here didn’t go so well. The staff acted as if I was bothering them by placing my order. Once I placed my order, they didn’t ring up my second order that I asked for as a «To-Go» order. They completely forgot about it. Then once I asked, it still didn’t come back to them. I told them what I wanted, then they said they’d keep it in the warmer for me until I was about to leave. I told them I’d take it as soon as it’s ready. I ordered the Pulled Pork Platter since it’s the Friday Special that wasn’t offered to me but I figured it out by myself, and The Western Sandwich with pulled pork and brisket as the meats. The sandwich alone was $ 9… which was way overpriced for the sandwich but I was expecting that damage to my wallet. The platter I ordered didn’t have any flavor to it. I guess that’s why they have the sauces sitting in the back so you can smother it to pretend the pulled pork has preloaded flavor. The meat was dry and a tad greasy. I was expecting a smoke-like smell with juices. The sides I had were some over seasoned waffle fries and green beans with bacon. There was a small pink slither in the tiny bowl that the beans came in that I guess was all the bacon they wanted to give me. The biscuit that came with the meal looked like something from a factory. A good old fashioned homemade biscuit would work wonders as a side. Not a doughy square that just makes you thirsty. After my meal, I went to check on my sandwich that I asked to have as soon as it was ready so I could head right out the door. I was sadly let down even more when the staff was too busy standing around in the back chatting and paying no attention to the front of the shop. I stood there for what seemed like 10 minutes trying to find a way not to seem rude about asking for my food so I could leave. Eventually, they noticed me and let me out of the barbecue prison. I’m not sure how this place is a chain that’s successful. It’s not horrible barbecue but it does have some work to do to catch up with the competition in the area. Speaking of competition, there is a barbecue competition coming up at the end of the month that I noticed online that had announced that Dickey’s was going to be competing in. The staff was totally unaware of this. Any other place would’ve promoted the event somehow trying to get word out on the street that they’re partaking in the event. You can do so much better Dickey’s…(at least they have free icecream)

It’s surprising how good the BBQ is here for being a chain. We make a point to stop at one on our long journeys back to visit relatives. Kids eat free on Sunday’s. Can’t beat that.

Stopped in for lunch this past weekend. The staff was friendly, they had a military discount, and the food was delicious! The restaurant was very clean & everything on the condiments bar was fully stocked. The sliced turkey & okra are the best! Definitely will return!

Editing review for the sincere apology I received in response to my review. I will also add that I catered a party using Dickey’s myself once, and it was a positive experience. I believe this place has a lot of good qualities but needs to work on the amount of staff on the clock and keep better supply of their meats on hand if possible. Thanks.

I really wanted to give this place 4 stars instead of 3 because the food was pretty good, they had free ice-cream and they were dog friendly outside. I ordered the spicy cheddar sausage and the honey bbq ham. Both were not bad, but the sausage was a tad too spicy and the ham a little dry. All in all I still would have given them 4 stars… BUT We brought our puppy Daisy who had just come from the park and she was thirsty. We had a water bottle for her, which was now empty, but my husband didn’t want to take our dog’s water bottle to the drink fountain to fill it up as he felt it would have been rude of him to do so, so he asked the lady behind the counter for a cup, so that he could use that to get water and then fill up the bottle. At the time the lady was drinking from the cup and just used the same cup that she was drinking out of and filled it up with water and handed it to him. Well, we know that our dog is not a germaphobe but that doesn’t mean we are not! Yuck! He accepted the cup but did not use it to give water to our puppy and said he didn’t say anything because he didn’t want to be rude. Well, I would have asked for a clean cup. That’s just me.

Barbecue is a cooking technique, different regions around the U.S. have their own way of cooking it low and slow, and the meat has a crunchy outside bark. Moist, tender, fall off the bone slightly pink the closer it is to the bone. The differences is in the sauces as well. With this knowledge in mind, it’s time to review this place. This place is a chain, a national chain. But this place is very clean, the staff is friendly and the food not bad. But if you want regional barbeque, this isn’t the place to find it. But it isn’t bad either.

It was late on a week night and I was driving so I couldn’t access the online menu. I called and the person who answered kindly told me the menu and helped me make decisions about dinner for two people. The food was ready for pickup very quickly. I appreciated that they waited for me to get there before cooking the okra, as they said it tastes much better when fresh. All of our food was very good. I really like that they offer sliced brisket, which was so tasty. My dad really enjoyed the pulled pork and he’s a tough judge. Their sauce is no too sweet and their fried okra is fantastic!

This isn’t a bad place at all despite of categorize as a chain. It’s a decent restaurant, clean and tidy. The décor is very contemporary. Herewith the good thing in this place. — FREEICECREAMEVERYDAY — KIDSMEALAREFREEEVERYSUNDAY Thought the food presentation is sloppy but the service is spectacular. Staffs are very friendly and polite. The meat are perfectly cooked, tender and juicy. I had three(3) meat combo consist of pulled pork, spicy cheddar sausage and chicken breast. Thought thy were fine, nothing spectacular. However, I do love the sausage. The portion is equivalent to the price. Too bad, they ran out of barbeque ham and turkey breast. The sides on the other hand are big. Try the fried OKRA, it was actually delicious and crunchy. As for the sauce, I do love the original and spicy barbeque. It adds more flavor to the meat. The North Carolina sauce was extremely disappointing. Military /dependent has 10% discount.

I’m hesitant to review chain restaurants. They have corporate backing and help with marketing, presentation, and standardization. When I go into a chain I expect a little more in service and presentation but I don’t expect memorable food because I can go to another identical store someplace else. Dickey’s doesn’t disappoint on any level of a chain restaurant. This branch was very clean, the service was fast and polite, and the food was very good. Plus who can beat free ice cream??? Even though it was late on a Sunday, this place was ready to feed. I was glad I came in when I did, there was a party of 20 that came in behind me and they were handled with the same grace and quality I received when I walked in. The brisket was very good. It is a Texas BBQ joint so they better be good there. The chicken breast and sausages were also very tasty. The pork was not the best ever but it was okay. And who could forget the buttered roll? Hot and buttery goodness abounds! Of the sauces available, I preferred the spicy but the Carolina was not bad. Overall I liked this place for good BBQ even if southeast Virginia is a tough place to impress people with BBQ.

Great spot. Kids eat free on Sundays and they let us pull our red wagon into the place since we walked here. And there’s free soft serve vanilla ice cream. But no beer which is wierd. Brisket and pork was good. A little dry but better ten other places. And I actually went to the place off if centerville and Indian river.

Just ate at the new location on kempsville road. Brisket was super good. Sweet sauce made it tangy. The sides were really good tho. Green beans, slaw, okra, macncheese, all really good. And a nice soft serve cone to end it all. Well be back again. Great staff also

I wanted to check this place out months ago, but the Unilocal reviews were not favorable. So after talking to a friend about this place and her giving it 2 thumbs up, I decided to go on her word and I am glad I did, because I wasn’t disappointed. I had a two meat platter — with pulled pork and brisket. Thank GOD it wasn’t that nasty NCBBQ — it is straight up TEXASBBQ! It was so good, very tender and good smokey flavor. I also had the mac n cheese, which was so yummy. My husband said the iced tea was really sweet and very good. The staff was friendly and helpful since it was our first time there and we didn’t know what to order. Being that my husband is from Texas and I lived there for a few years we know what good BBQ taste like and this is pretty close to Texas BBQ that you can get in Va Beach. The bad review below are very inaccurate and I’ve come to the conclusion that«Virginian’s» do not know what real BBQ is anyways, so I need to remember that for the next time I look to Unilocal for review on a BBQ place.

I would say Dickey’s is authentic Texas BBQ!!! The meats are delicious and our family really likes the okra! True Texans!!! I had the pulled pork sandwich and dill potato salad! Don’t forget kids eat free on Sunday and soft serve ice cream is free!!! My family enjoys this BBQ!!! They also cater and have family meal packs!

Great food, bad location. Even when we were looking for this place using our GPS we almost missed it. This is the best BBQ I have had in Virginia Beach, but not better than the places I had in Georgia and South Carolina. The staff seemed a little unorganized, I think this was because they were all still getting used to the new location. I agree with other reviews that this place could really use a different menu set up. Even the big laminated menus that people can hold in line. My favorite thing is their giant potato! It was delicious! Their sweet tea was very good too. This would be a great place to get to go for a beach trip or to stop and eat on a lunch break.

First time here. a small shop in a terrible location. the staff was friendly greeting you the moment you walk in. ordering was simple and fast. I had deal of the day. Pulled pork BBQ and spice Cheddar sausage. with two side. slaw and green beans… The slaw was pre-made like the ones you but at any market… beans out of the can. I have to agree with other post… the food is bland .no flavor. The menu is on a board you have to lean backwards to read it.

Dickey’s is a franchise and I’ve had them a few times while in Texas. It’s solid barbecue so when I learned that they had opened up a location at Hilltop, I was very excited to give it a shot. So, today while my son and I were out running errands, we stopped in to pick up some take out meat by the pound. When I walked in, the smell of smoked meat made my knees weak. I knew this was going to scratch my itch for Texas style barbecue. I agree with Jeffrey R. that the set up is a little odd. You have to go out into the seating area to check out the menu but the meat cutting station is right in front of you as you enter and that is where you are supposed to start. So, if you haven’t seen the menu before, it’s a little awkward. I was only there to order some meat by the pound, so I didn’t get a chance to try much else. We ordered a pound of brisket and ended up getting a half pound of chicken. As my son and I got into the car, I could hardly wait to try it. We opened both containers and sampled both meats. The brisket was very good, smokey and tender. It isn’t the best brisket I’ve ever had but it beats anything I’ve found around here. The chicken was good too, though maybe a little dry. It had a nice smokey flavor and my son liked it a lot. It was good enough to make me want to get back again to try more. The place is decent sized with maybe a dozen tables. It could be more, just guesstimating there. They have three different sauces available to you if you dine in and apparently they are famous for their sweet tea? Didn’t have any but I will give it a shot next time. They also have free ice cream cones for those who dine in. The only ding I could give the place was that the dining room was way too dirty for as slow as they were when we went in. Several tables had napkins on them and clearly hadn’t been cleaned in a while. The floor also needed to be swept. So, I would like to see more attention paid to those little details. Overall, this is a welcomed addition to the area. For me personally, it fills a need for Texas style, smoked meats that I had been missing while here. I look forward to getting back!
