I ended up going with a different bakery. I don’t care that I lost a $ 200 deposit plus other money that I had paid. She was sending me all over to get things to decorate my cake and when I could not find them she wanted to charge my an outlandish fee. I when elsewhere saved $ 275 between my cake and my groom cake. I also didn’t get the run around and the cake taste better and was BEAUTIFUL! They are a good bakery but not for weddings.

***MYORDERWASWRONG*** After filling out initial cake request form in store and reviewing it a second time days later in store when I made the payment. NEVER again will I pay first! But I was offered a piece of brownie that was made with extra cake batter from my order? Also for the hour I was quoted for«Decorating» the baker freelanced a design in the color scheme that was completely missing from my design in less than two minutes. Being in the Military I cherish the Family’s Birthdays and Holidays I am around for, I wish I had no remnant of this day. I do commend them allowing me to pick up my order during store closure.

I stopped by during lunch on a Friday, there weren’t any customers but I wasn’t greeted right away. Eventually a young lady came to the front and told me there were items in the side case. Outside of that, she barely interacted with me which made me feel uncomfortable, I felt very unwelcomed. Despite this fact, I decided to try an almond croissant and some macarons. Nothing was labeled and I had to ask a few times which flavors the macarons were. They were tiny, like the ones you can buy from the frozen food section of Trader Joes. Since nothing was labeled I had no idea how much anything was. She rang me up and my total was a shocking $ 15!!! My receipt was emailed to me and that’s when I discovered the macarons were a whopping $ 2.50/each. These better be delicious. I bite into the strawberry macaron and it’s hallow and hard. What in the world? The other 3, same thing. The flavor wasn’t bad but what a disappointment. Later that evening I tried to warm up the croissant and no surprise, it was doughy and just not good. Unfortunately my experience was not like my fellow Unilocalers and I can’t honestly say I’m willing to give them another chance.

Thoroughly enjoyed this little place. Had the BLT Supreme and it’s delicious. All of their sandwiches are handcrafted using fresh ingredients. Potato salad was great, and the cookie that comes with your meal was heavenly. Signed up for the bread club and looking forward to experiencing international breads whenever I choose. The owner is a real treat. Super kind and accommodating. Was a little bummed to learn they don’t do brunch any longer. It sounded divine.

I love Gateaux — it’s as close to Paris as I can get here in Hampton Roads. I love getting the French Bread, The pastries are fabulous and even though they did not have crème brûlée’ on the menu, she made a special batch for me as birthday gift for my mom. Viva la Gateaux!

I have had their cakes,(wedding and cupcakes) pastries, tarts, tiramisu, macarons, and breads. Each time, they were amazing! The cakes are moist and flavorful, the macarons melt in your mouth, the breads are perfect! Everything is sinfully and consitantly delicious. I am not just a customer, I am also a wedding officiant and gladly refer couples to Gateaux as I know Joanne will treat them with professional courtesy and kindness and provide them a yummy and beautiful cake. You must stop by and taste for yourself!

The Best! Joanne and her staff are terrific!!! We needed a custom Birthday Cake on 48 hour notice. They pulled it off with no problem! Made it fresh the morning of the party using our specs & design :) I was amazed with all of the choices on cake types and fillings. And our cake was delish!!! Joanne was so easy and fun to work with, she ROCKS! Had been to 3 other bakeries and all said no way… need a weeks notice minimum and had to use their designs only! Recently had the Challah Bread… AWESOME! I will DEFINITELY be going back for more of everything and recommending then to friends, family et al…

First of all very friendly owner! Amazing cakes and pastries. I highly recommend this bakery! I was working at a business in norfolk and we only used bread and desserts from here. The quality was always on point and the order was always ready on time. If you’re ever in the area(or even if you’re not), stop by for a sandwich. House baked bread with great things inside. How can you go wrong?! One thing I ask for Gateaux is to expand. I live in Norfolk and would love one close by!

Delicious almond croissants, fabulous bear paws with fresh and tasty fruit fillings, great chocolate brownies & apple tarts, and love the whole wheat, rosemary, and sundried tomato breads. Can’t beat Gateaux in VA Beach!

My fiancé and I came here to check out wedding cakes and were immediately rubbed the wrong way. The owners asked us how many places we were considering and we explained it was down to two, Gateaux and one more. They asked us the name of the other place and we told them. The owners were shockingly unprofessional and looked up the other bakery’s website and proceeded to make fun of it. Because our wedding was going to be sometime in June, we were pressured to sign a contract that day(it was December). We said we would get back to them when we had a date set and had made our choice. The owners followed up twice via email and again tried to get us to sign a contract with scare tactics, saying that if we didn’t sign soon, they’d be booked and we would be missing out. I don’t appreciate customer service that feels like they’re threatening unavailability or they think they’re too good for potential customers. Oh, and as for taste? The cake was dry. The fillings were all way to over the top sweet.

I’ve been hanging out at the Gateaux Bakery pop up inside the St. Paul’s Farm Market for a few weeks now and the only thing better than the company is the food(and that’s darned good). So far, I’ve had their adorable macarons(SOTINY), challlah bread(hello, French Toast), bear claws(APRICOT), and today I took home a tiny apple pie made with a baklava crust, apple filling and apricot glaze topping. MOTHEROFGOD. That pie is so delicious I housed the whole thing, and it sounds like a porn movie up in here. I’ve never had more delicious baked goods in my life and I have had pastries from around the world. I’m actually glad they’re not closer because I’d be on their doorstep every day looking for another score. Seriously, there are baked goods and then there are baked greats. Gateaux is definitely the latter.

OMG… I just stopped by and had the Gateaux sandwich and it was sooooo incredibly good. It comes with a drink, chips and a cookie but I could barely finish the sandwich because it was so big. The are a little pricey if you compare them to a fast food joint but again you are definitely getting quality food. The lady that waited on me was also super nice. I will definitely be back!

I picked up some sweetheart cupcakes last week. It was really cool that they had some that I could write my own message on. The friend I gave them to loved them. Was out today and my son wanted me to bring him back a brownie so I stopped in and picked up a brownie bomb. Didn’t seem like it had any brownie in it but it didn’t matter! It was a thick coating of chocolate I think we tasted some caramel and it was filled with the best chocolate mousse! My son in very picky when it comes to sweets and he LOVED it. Still sitting over there stuffing his face. These things are huge.

A real bakery serving up real food. Gluten-free truffles are quite delicious; you can’t even tell there’s no gluten. Their menu is really something to drool over from behind the counter. The delicious aromas they keep serving up regularly are nearly criminal they are so sweet and so tempting. Great place, highly recommend. Noms.

Mmm… you get pie with your sandwich. At first I felt slaughtered by the prices when perusing the menu. They seemed high but the sandwiches themselves are quite sizable and come with a side like potato or pasta salad. But the aforementioned pie is the kicker. I chose pecan. I love pecan.

I had never bought a wedding cake before so I didn’t know what to expect when I stepped into Gateaux. I really loved the look of the store and the variety of pastries surprised even my gigantic sweet tooth. Joanne worked with me on designing a beautiful and winter themed wedding cake. Joanne worked within my budget and varied ideas of what I wanted. She was able to sort out all the ideas I had and form them into one cohesive idea. Trust me, that was no easy task. Joanne was very chipper and fun to work with; she makes me want to do it all again. Oh and be sure to try a croissant !!! They make them

My friend and I checked this place out to fulfill our sweet tooth cravings. Gateaux Bakery had delicious French baked treats. We tried the macarons, madeleines, pecan cookies, tres leches and the best apple pie. The décor even had a French feel. This quaint place closed early at 6 p.m., so we had to hurry and eat. I’d love to come back to sample more goodies, especially the cakes.

Finally got the chance to try this place out. I was pleasantly surprised by the whole experience! The décor is nice and it smelled like freshly baked bread! As a matter of fact, I got a hot loaf right out of the oven. Yummy!!! I chose a few different things to sample. My favorite was the blueberry scone and croissants. My kids loved their chocolate croissant. My husband enjoyed an apricot bear claw. We will be back to try more goodies! The apple strudel looks incredible! There is an upstairs… but I did not get the chance to check it out. Looks like a nice sitting area.

I love sweets, so when a sign caught my eye that a new bakery in the Bayside area opened I was all over it. Upon closer inspection it’s name is a dead give away, this wouldn’t be a run of the mill bakery, but patisserie. The name«Gateaux» in French means cake which is the bakery’s focus. The shop does all sorts of specialty cakes including the wedding variety. The bake shop is located off of Pleasure House Rd. in Thoroughgood Commons. The bright burgundy and white awning that protrudes from the building make it a cinch to find. Parking is plentiful and should never be an issue. Both the parking lot and sidewalk were in exceptional condition on my visit. Upon entering the store I was immediately greeted by owner Chris. The confectionery has one long case and another for refrigerated goods like tarts and cakes. This is strictly a carry out store. There is no customer seating inside, or outside. Some reconfiguration of a shelving accent wall would have to be changed to provide interior tables. But I suspect they will add a few tables outside the door come Spring… at least they should in my opinion. I guess you could say owners Chris and Joanne decided to have a mid life crisis together and opened the only French Bakery in Virginia Beach just before Thanksgiving. Joanne who does all the baking has taught and most recently was in the healthcare field. However, this would not be the family’s first foray making French baked goods. Previous to Gateaux they owned a bake shop in Greensboro, NC. Husband Chris has the flexibility to work from home and assist in the store daily. You could say it’s a family run business with there college age daughter assisting when home from school. Everything looked scrumptious in the case. Chris, then later Joanne came out from the kitchen to discuss some of the items. I elected to choose several to take home and sample. I picked up a few palmiers(like a danish) in chocolate chip and blueberry, a chocolate bouchon(like a cup cake), an apple caramel tart and a few chocolate chip cookies. Chris gave me a chocolate macaroon to try in the store. Strange, but I had never had one. It had a nice crunch to the exterior cookie and a delicious crème inside. I was immediately craving another, it was awesome! Fast forward to my home after dinner with the family all dying to try the treats I brought home. Mom said the chocolate chip cookie was to die for, so rich, crisp and tons of chips. My wife and I thought the chocolate bouchon was over the top. It was crazy rich with a moist chip center and crisp outer edge. My son and I both loved the chocolate chip and blueberry palimer’s. I heated mine up and enjoyed with coffee. OMG it was incredibly yummy! The tart immediately reminded me of my all time favorite desert at Disney’s Epcot French bakery. Lots of fresh fruit, scrumptious flavors and nice texture to the bottom. Not to mention lots if crumbly goodness on top. Is anyone keeping score, I certainly am. Five different items sampled, a family of four tasting five home runs dishes. There is no doubt in my mind that those who try Gateaux will fall in love with this new Bayside patisserie like we have.
