I really don’t know if they are trying to save some money or what, but I cannot believe I changed the rating to 2 stars when I have been going to yama’s since the orginal tiny one on general booth. We came in for lunch on Friday when it was 90+ degrees and hoping to cool off and enjoy some good sushi, when we walked in it was so hot in there. This was the 2nd time we came here and it felt like no a.c. who wants to eat sushi in a warm place. Not I. We both got the lunch box with all sashimi. They have changed their salad. It used to be ice berg mix with tomatoes and cucumber but now, just romain leaves and watered down ginger dressing. The salad is usually my favorite thing and I was highly disappointed. The sashimi was small and thin and just not up to par from their past slices. It was a generally good lunch. Would have loved a. c and better quality food. Won’t be returning to this location.

I like this place a lot! It’s is clean and the food is great, I will recommend anyone to try the Crazy Yama roll, Volcano or Red moon, they aren’t really as spicy as I thought, my 3 year old kills them roll al time! They even gave me free rolls on the house! That’s a plus bec no one else does!

I was surprised to have sushi that was this good in Virginia, seeing as I live in the Bay Area of California were Japanese food is very common and well-executed. Not only was my meal here delicious, but also deal-icious. If you come during lunch, you can get the bento box for only $ 9, and it comes with two sushi rolls, a salad, miso soup, steamed rice, and they included two tempura shrimp pieces. If you look under the lunch box option, you’ll notice there are three types of sushi you can choose from: sashimi, special rolls, and basic rolls. The sashimi is not kept over rice, all of the special rolls are only 4pc, and the basic rolls that are not specified as 4pc are 6−8pc. I ordered the candy cane roll, which has sauce, crab meat, and lobster, and the spicy salmon roll. The spicy salmon roll was really delicious, and the candy cane roll was good, though I thought it had a little too much crab meat(weird to say, I know). They also included an extra roll for our party of three on the house, the Twin Towers roll, which I didn’t try but was apparently delicious as well. They then gave us three free pieces of watermelon! I don’t like watermelon but the other two people in our party do. Although most of my family doesn’t like sushi, I’ll definitely have to remind my aunt(one of the only family members who likes sushi) to take me whenever I visit her.

The staff was very friendly. I bought the spicy tuna roll and the superman I believe(it had tempura and crab in it) as well as miso soup. They gave me a free roll which was nice. The sushi wasn’t that great. The spicy tuna did not taste right at all and the miso soup was kind of bland. Although they were nice and they gave me a free roll I probably won’t be stopping by this place again.

This is my favorite roll in the Yama sushi, crispy shrimp with the home made rice. Sip a tea and enjoy the music over here is the best option during the weekend. Definitely. I will return to here sooner.

I have been going to Yama since they were that little restaurant off General Booth(before expanding). Let me tell you, that was our go-to sushi spot for years! We would always go there for the cheap lunch bento boxes(we were broke college kids at the time) and then head to Croatan. I’m happy to see that they’ve expanded to several other locations, so the General Booth one is not as crowded anymore. Although, back then they didn’t have the all you can eat places so that’s probably why Yama was really popular back then, too. I wish I could say that every location is the same, but the quality does vary at each of the different locations. I noticed at this particular location that the service is slow. I mean, we were a table of 3 people and there were probably only 3 other tables that were filled. It was pretty empty. The service here was meh. My mom had ordered edamame and they forgot all about it. So she basically had that after all the food came out and she was almost done eating. it wasn’t an appetizer anymore, it was a dessert lol. I ordered the super duper and volcano, is my usual go-to. It wasn’t as yummy as it usually is. My boyfriend ordered two other special rolls, which he thought was good. One thing that I love about Yama is that they always give you a free roll. My boyfriend is allergic to lobster, and my mom doesn’t eat seafood. He thought that the free roll had lobster on it, so I ended up eating the whole free roll like a fatty. Oh well, more for me. Next time, I will probably visit another location if I wanted to go to Yama.

Yama is one of my favorite places to enjoy sushi. This location has a very large menu and colorful rolls to choose from. Don’t forget to tip the sushi masters!

I really liked the décor at this location! When you’re seated they offer you a complimentary cucumber salad which was delicious! Everything(spicy tuna roll, miso soup, and gyoza) that I ordered was good. They offer complimentary specialty rolls which I think is a nice gesture. When I was there, they gave us a free«candy roll.» The prices were OK. Not terribly expensive nor cheap.

Too bad I can’t put 0 stars. Walked in wasn’t even acknowledged or greeted. Found a booth and sat there for about 10 minutes still no one serviced my table. Got up retrieved my own menus, still waiting for service. Not to mention I that place isn’t cheap but there was no A/C and it was about 80 outside. Heat + Fish = SMELL So, still waiting for service about 30 minutes. This is with 2 children and a hungry husband. The place was fairly empty so there was no reason for poor service, the lunch rush was over with and dinner rush wasn’t around yet(around 2:30pm). It was about 35 minutes since we walked in the door and sat down when the service lady finally decided she would make eye contact with me. But still no service. Walked out and told husband that this place gives The Yama’s off General Booth a bad rep, with this terrible service. Decided to go to Flaming Japan for better service and A/C. Plus it’s not as expensive.

I ordered the spicy tuna roll(left) and the spicy salmon roll(right). Each came with 8 rolls for a little less than $ 5. Although it both tasted great, presentation could have been better. The rolls were uneven and a little sloppy. The place was pretty empty besides the other two full booths and there was only one guy behind the sushi bar & one waitress. I don’t know exactly how long we waited for our food, but the amount of time it took for us to eat our sushi was quicker than the wait. At least they gave us the usual free roll and the complimentary mandarins w/whipped cream & chocolate drizzle.

This visit was very disappointing. After we were seated and we’re ordering drink waitress said couldn’t serve alcohol drinks nor beer, for a reason I couldn’t comprehend or understand. Maybe they served under age customers and lost their license. Needless to say our visit was strange, we ordered speciality rolls and a couple of dinner entrees, which were good but not the best this visit… chalked it up a bad night to visit Yama.

Even though I haven’t particularly favored Yama in the past due to IMO mediocre service and lackluster food, I think my past two visits with them have made up for it. I guess my secret is to just get take-out! Yama has a pretty big selection of specialty rolls, with raw, deep fried, drenched in sauce, or whatever your cravings are. I used to be a huge fan of their volcano rolls until my waistline decided to rebel against me. Nowadays I stick to the sashimi and I am generally pleased with how Yama does it. Thick slices of sashimi and fish in the rolls as well, compared to other places where they either give you wafer thin sashimi OR a thin strip of salmon in each roll. No fishy smell. everything tastes as it should. Price-wise is pretty on par with most other places in the area. This particular Yama is pretty dimly lit and has a lot of seating, so I wouldn’t anticipate a major wait on any day or night. The employees are also very friendly and of course no one can forget that you’ll almost always get a little something for free when you order from them.

Came here with my friends, for sushi, Yama’s is the last place I would go to but since my friend offered to pay for us I couldn’t say no. We ordered off their lunch menu and we all got bento box. Where you can pick two rolls and it comes with salad and a scoop of rice. We ordered a lot of food and two specialty rolls on top of that. We got a free roll and cheesecake. I could see what people would come here to satisfy their sushi cravings but I personally am not a fan of overly decorated/breaded/sauced saucy. It just doesn’t do it for me and giving me freebies will not change my mind either. We all left, taking the rest of the food Togo. Service is prompt and friendly.

Still to this day, this is my favorite sushi spot for me and my family. My son loves their super duper roll. Service is always on point while all their food is made to perfection. Chirashi is my go to dish, despite the fact I don’t eat all the rice, the fresh sashimi is perfect to its taste.

Oh no… I’ve always had amazing experiences at Yama. Many have said hit or miss and last night was a sure miss. I stopped in just before 8pm and ordered their sashimi served with rice to take home. About 10 minutes later I was handed my food and was told that a few extra pieces were added on the house. I was excited to get home and eat. My entire dinner was a struggle. The soup and salad were on point but the sashimi wasn’t good at all. I’ve never been picky with sashimi but It was a struggle with all the bites. The salmon and tuna were okay but everything else wasn’t very good. I never leave food on my plate but I had to let a few pieces go to waste. A bit sad on this recent visit.

I arrived late in VA beach and we were looking for something light for dinner. We both wanted to do take out so we decided on some late night sushi. Placed an order over the phone and were informed the order would take about 20 minutes. When we arrived, the restaurant was about half full around 9pm on a Friday. We still had to wait a few more minutes but not much longer until our food was ready. We got the Sashimi Deluxe for $ 19.95, a side of seaweed salad and a cup of sweet tea. When I was paying for my order they actually stated they included a few extra pieces of sashimi for us on the house which was really nice of them! Based on some other reviews, Like Lisa H. looks like they give small items for free which is a nice touch to increase customer loyalty. The service was quick and friendly and the sushi was of a good quality. The sashimi pieces were thick cut, fresh, and served at a slightly cold temperature, but not so much that it felt previously frozen. Sashimi dinner platters always come with four different proteins. We got: salmon, tuna, yellow tail and I forgot the fourth one. There were 18 pieces of Sashimi and 1 bowl of rice. The dinner platter also comes with a soup and Yama Salad which were average.

Based on the two visits I have had here so far, I have come away fully satisfied, impressed, and guilt-ridden. Guilt-ridden because I chose to patronize lesser sushi restaurants in the area and not return to Yama’s. That will be rectified immediately as they have truly earned my respect and loyalty. The first time I visited the location on Princess Anne Road, it was the grand opening. Not only did we get treated to a superbly delicious Japanese dinner, we were offered a complimentary roll and dessert! As if the service wasn’t already top notch, it was all topped of with physical gifts! My family was given a very ornate picture frame and oriental fan! THATSHOWYOUMAKEANIMPRESSION! On my second and recent visit to the same location, I saw no decline in the quality of the service or food quality. But to my surprise, once again, we were offered a complimentary roll! I had no choice. My conscience wrote in a 25% tip and I am a very strict tipper. I couldn’t justify not giving at least that much. No other sushi restaurant exists in Va. Beach in my mind.

I came in on a Sunday, I was glad they were open. It was nice and clean inside, but dead. All the employees were in the back hanging out, it caused some service to be a bit slow. I had a little trouble ordering since the waitress didn’t know what I meant when I asked for nigiri style(with rice). It was made quickly and most of it tasted good. The salmon(my favorite) didn’t have much taste and I think it may have been recently thawed or something. I was served a free dessert of red bean icecream, which was so nice… even though I was super full.

To begin, I have never been to a sushi place before. It was my teenage son who enjoys sushi, and had heard about Yama Sushi. I ordered a Teriyaki dish, and rest of the party ordered sushi. I greatly enjoyed the teriyaki(pictured), and my wife and son loved the sushi they ordered. They, as the experts, said it was excellent sushi :-) Also, the service was great, and the ambiance of this restaurant, even on this busy day, was very quiet and nice. Oh, another bonus: they will bring you alot of «freebies». My son stated on a previous visit it was awesome cheesecake, and on this visit they brought out 8 free sushi. Maybe she saw my Unilocal app open when she visited the table because 8 more free sushi of a different variety came to the table a short time later :-) Even though I personally am not a big fan of sushi, based on the great opinions of my family and from my own experience there as well, I give Yama Sushi 4.5 stars. I definitely recommend ‘em!
