This place has shut it’s doors permanently. Really sad to see it go for many reasons. I found many kids that were picky eaters were picky for different reasons. This place pretty much addressed all issues under this category in different ways. Not to mention they took into consideration allergies. This was a good place for field trips, why? They reinforced what kids learned academically. They also taught food safety. My kid loved the place, she is a foodie after all. But with what she learned in YCA has prepared her to be my sous chef at home.

I don’t know whether the folks that own this cooking school for kids can make any money, but they are sure providing a great service for families who want some help in teaching their children a little about the culinary arts. In addition to it being a great activity for the kids, I really hope it’s a successful business. We took all three VB-based grandchildren to a teaser session(courtesy of Groupon) last Saturday morning, and were very impressed with the facility, the culinary curriculum and, most of all, the staff. The children’s programs are divided into three age groupings(Senior Chefs, ages 11 and up; Junior Chefs, ages 6 to 10; and Kindercooks, ages 3 to 6). I’m told the Academy also offers instruction for older teens and adults, but I didn’t get any information on this. The programs are really set up to be ongoing instruction for the students — the most common membership here is a monthly one, which includes at least one session per week — although one-off sessions like the ones we attended are available at any time. For the kids attending regularly, the curriculum starts with the basics — proper use of kitchen utensils, measuring, wet/dry blending, spices and seasonings, etc. But each session also always includes cooking something, which, I suppose, goes a long way towards maintaining interest, especially among the younger kids. Additionally, the Kindercook curriculum is tied into the letters of the alphabet — during our visit, our 4-year old grandson’s class prepared ‘Green Potato Pie,’ while working on their letter ‘G.’ A really nice touch. Of our three attendees, I think one, maybe two, are candidates for the ongoing programs offered at Young Chefs Academy. So, we’ll be back!
