A decent BBQ place if you order the right items. The best item on the menu in my opinion are the burnt ends. Burnt ends are the ends of the beef brisket that tend to be charred pretty well. You have to given them a try. Pair that with the pig mac or cowboy beans and you’re golden! They take credit card but the machine tends to go down a lot so you’re better off bringing cash.

This place reminds me of street vendors. It is next to Rt. 5. I had the pulled pork sandwich. The pork was moist and tender. There is also a little spice to the meat. But, I think that is the little bit of bbq sauce that is mixed in. I’ve had much better pulled pork sandwiches at other bbq places. There is barely any bbq sauce mixed in with the pork. I think there should be a little more. Also, they put the meat on a white roll that looks like a hamburger roll, so the roll gets soggy instantly. I was not happy. It would be better if the roll was a kaiser roll. It is more dense and won’t get soggy from the meat juice right away. It costs a little over $ 7 for the sandwich after taxes. There are no sides included with the sandwich, so I think this is a little pricey for just a sandwich.

I happened to be driving by when I spotted a banner that said that this joint was voted the best BBQ in the county, and when I smelled the wood smoke spewing out of the smoker, I was lured in. I wanted to order brisket, but was informed they ran out the night before, so I ordered a 3 piece ribs and an appetizer chicken wings. Both the ribs and chicken wings were tender and smoky, but the flavors were just ok. I was wondering why the ribs tasted so familiar, and the worker told me they use Sweet Baby Ray’s sauce, which I can buy at a grocery store. If you’re a BBQ shack with a big honkin’ wood burning smoker, make your own darn sauce!!! As for the sides, I couldn’t stop eating the mac and cheese, but not because it tasted good. Eating it was like some sort of science experiment for me with its strange silky mushy texture broken up by some weird bacon bits(?) looking things in it and whatever cheese they used, well, let’s just say that Velveeta tasted gourmet in comparison. The corn bread was comparable to Jiffy corn bread mix(not good). All in all, I’d give this place a 2.75 total. If I happened to be in the area again, I’d try out the brisket and maybe the wings again(which were a 3.5 for me), but otherwise, I can’t say I was impressed.

Don’t be fooled by its appearance, this place definitely serves up some good barbeque! Went here with my mom for the first time and got a half rack of ribs with the smoked mac and cheese. The ribs were so tender that they practically fell off the bone and the sauce was very tasty. The smoked mac and cheese was delectable and even had bits of meat in it. We also got a corn muffin with our order that we dipped in the leftover cheese and sauce, yum! It’s a great place to get lunch, I hear their pulled pork and brisket are fantastic so I hope I get to try them again. It’s a little pricey and it’s cash only but to me it was well worth it.

This place just won«best ribs» at the first annual Porkapoloza so maybe the ribs are good. They were out of them when we stopped by, maybe that’s a good sign. I had the pulled pork sandwich. It was more like the shredded bar b q buried in sauce that you find in cans at the store. Not horrible but not pulled pork. In this area Smokin with Chris in Southington, and a small place across from the sleeping giant golf course are much better.

Call us severely disappointed. With the big smoker on the back of this XXL-sized food truck, we thought we’d have some good southern eating. I got the three ribs with slaw and cornbread, my pardner got the pulled pork sandwich and a bottle of water. Was astonished when the bill was $ 18.50. Definitely not food truck prices so expectations were high. The pulled pork sandwich meat was dry and tasteless. The ribs were similarly dry, burnt, and the only flavor was from the Baby Rays BBQ sauce that I squirted on(it was the only sauce they had). Coleslaw wasn’t bad, but the cornbread tasted like it was commercially made. I think they have the temperature on their cooker too high and aren’t cooking low and slow enough. The quality and quantity of their meat needs to be higher as well. In any case, definitely not worth near $ 20 and we two girls left hungry. I’ve had much better down South in Louisiana and the Carolina’s. Even locally, Uncle Willies in Orange is much better. Too bad, we really wanted to like this place.

Great bbq and mac and cheese. In fact, you can get mac and cheese on top of brisket sandwich(called a Moo Mac) or mac and cheese with pulled pork and bacon. The one criticism(and maybe it was an isolated incident) the cornbread they offered was store-bought. I just asked how big the pieces were, and the kid in the truck held up the package for me. Otherwise, great place and I will continue to go because the food is great!

Never been to Kansas City? That’s okay, me neither. I’m not sure what there is to do down there except feast on some of the world’s best BBQ. Luckily, you can get those same ribs cooked to perfection, those beans perfectly seasoned, and that pulled pork that just aches to be eaten without having to go any further than Big Country’s Hickory Pit BBQ in Wallingford. The entire establishment is much closer to a food truck than a restaurant and although the entire place is on wheels, it doesn’t venture too far from it’s location on Route 5 very often since word has spread about this stunningly delicious BBQ place. Big Country’s Hickory Pit BBQ is one of those rare places where you won’t be disappointed no matter what you order. You can choose individual helpings of pulled pork, ribs, brisket, chicken, smoked mac & cheese, and their cowboy beans, in addition to other recipes. You can also assemble your own personal meal with these pieces of BBQ heaven and it will come with a piece of cornbread(which is not nearly as good as everything else this place serves). The bottom line is that this food is so good you might end up gnawing off some of the skin on your fingers if you aren’t careful. My recommendation is that you try the Pig Mac and never look back. Big Country’s Hickory Pit BBQ is open from Monday — Saturday from11:00 am — 6:00 pm and on Sunday from 11:00 am — 8:00 pm. Just look for the little wooden trailer in the Chef’s parking lot. The reason Big Country’s Hickory Pit BBQ only gets 4 stars is because the portions are not where they should be given the price. You will never feel like you didn’t get what you paid for, only you will need to order a bit more food than you might think to get that wonderful«I’m not moving off this couch for 2 hours» feeling. In addition, the location while convenient, is only a few feet from Route 5 and so it’s not the most appetizing place to eat. Big Country’s Hickory Pit BBQ was recently awarded by the Connecticut Magazine and the New Haven Advocate for it’s food but the real award of course is not having to drive down to Kansas City. Ever.

Such a treat to find this BBQ joint as we were traveling from New York to Boston. What a relief not to have to eat at a Wendy’s! I had the ribs and spicy beans(w/a side of extra wet wipes) and I’d give it 5 stars save for two things: 1. The cornbread was forgettable and 2. they were out of pulled pork(and I didn’t have the 15 mins to wait for a new batch). Definitely worth pulling off the highway for.

This mobile shack is located in the Chef’s equipment emporium lot. For what it is, it wasn’t that bad.
