Very classy establishment, classic mix of fine-dine French cuisine and politics. To the left and right, you will notice the Congressional aura quickly. Contemporary décor, warm ambiance. The reason for sampling the fare of Bistro Bis was the Restaurant Week Menu. The neatly composed menu had several typical French items. The appetizers were outstanding! Very well-executed and got us very excited for the entrees. The Steak Tartare Attila was a very generous portion. Usually the tartare is served as a 6 – 8 $ portion for a few oz. This platter itself could have been an entrée for someone with a smaller stomach. Crisp thinly sliced chips gave a nice texture balance between the creaminess of the tartare and the crunch of the potato. The microgreens were a nice touch(I’m a fan) and the quail egg really elevated the depth of flavor to hit the one outa the park! Fricasse d’Escargots were of a traditional French preparation. Buttery(but just a touch over), but somehow did not fully mask the taste of the mollusk.(Arguably, Le Diplomate has a better presentation and serve balance between texture and flavor, imo). Nonetheless, the saffron hint was there as well as the garlic confit. The entrees is where BB falls a bit flat, but I’ve noticed this trend across French restaurants… will report back if this trend continues. My girlfriend is a huge duck aficionado so she immediately selected the Duck Confit, hands down. Unfortunately, the skin was not as crisp as the fat had not been rendered out and was kind of flabby and may have been under a heat lamp. The star of the dish was a let down. My Steak Frites, on the other hand, was a classic preparation. The red wine butter was an intriguing concept and I thoroughly enjoyed the complexity of the flavor profile between the sweetness and savoriness with a hint of tannic properties. Steak was cooked to medium rare, like I asked, and had a good balance between texture and fat. The frites were a bit over-salted but very crispy and light. Desserts is where BB saves itself from the clutches of a 3* review as they were delightful. The Crème Brulee was well-executed and even temperature profile throughout. Very nice crust on top with a intensely rich vanila flavor underneath. The Tarte aux Pommes was excellent. Very, very good and enjoyable. The 15minute preparation is well-worth the time(just let the server know ahead of time), wonderful flaky homemade pastry with a delectable apple filling inside. Superb.

We went here for restaurant week lunch and the service was amazing! Our server was so nice and funny. The experience was well rounded. Everyone eating here looked important. Either they were into politics, working for the government, or doing business. All the dishes were delicious. Its your typical french cuisine. Savory, light, and full of flavor… although not too memorable. The escargot as im trying to recall was what really stood out.

I think of Bistro Bis mainly as a work breakfast place, but I’ve tried it out for lunch a few times, and overall, it’s a fine location for a business lunch, but it’s overpriced there are better French restaurants in DC. Even though this restaurant is technically located inside a hotel, I get the sense that most of the diners are not staying there. The breakfast crowd is somewhat busy, but the lunch crowd when Congress is in session is completely full. I imagine that when Congress is not in session, the place is definitely not as busy. The breakfast here is not very«French.» It’s just general egg dishes and stuff like that, and it’s fine for a working breakfast. The lunch has more«French» highlights, and most recently I ordered the beef bourguignon. Honestly, for $ 19 I expected something more substantial. Compared to Le Diplomate, this one pales in comparison. The beef was cooked very well, but it was more sized like and appetizer and not an entrée. So if you just ordered this dish, like I did, you don’t leave very full. For tourists, I think this restaurant is overpriced. Overall, this is a business restaurant. The service is punctual and rather formal, but it’s a nice place.

Paris, down the street from the US Capitol Building. Food is fresh, tasty and pure delight. The beef bourguignon yesterday was incredible. As was the mushroom soup.

I went with three other people for what I deem to be a business lunch.(The main criterion I employed for this consideration is that we will be reimbursed for our meals.) When we arrived around 1:30PM on a weekday, the dining room was still pretty packed. The best word that I have for the experience is «solid». I liked my appetizer, which was an endive salad with pear and blue cheese. Such salads were surprising 25 years ago and have now become something of a cliché. Nonetheless, the B.B. chefs infused new life into this old classic and created a salad that tasted great and that I’d happily order again. My main dish was the daily special, which was a flounder with what I think was wilted kale and a few other ingredients(one of which I actively disliked). I’d give that dish three stars and would go for 3.5 stars as my overall rating for Bistro Bis. Rounding up to a whole number, we get to four stars. My dining companions were regulars at this Bistro. They made a good choice for our lunch.

A decent French restaurant in DC. Came here Friday after Thanksgiving and was kind of shocked how easy it was to make a reservation here but also how empty it was. Nonetheless, here’s what I’m recommend: Entrée — I ordered the Bouillabaisse and absolutely liked it. The octopus and shrimp were delicious. I only wish they gave me more broth or gave me a spoon to drink it up. My sister’s bf ordered the duck leg and was impressed by it as well. Dessert — The Tarte aux Pommes take an additional 15mins to make but it was so good. Pretty much takes like an amazing thin apple pie. I also tried the Crème Brulee and wasn’t impressed because the vanilla bean just didn’t shine through.

For lunch today i ordered their soup du jour(tomato) and salade greco. This is a bed of grilled veggies with a grilled butterfly cut chicken breast and topped with a firm, sunnyside fried egg. Absolutely delicious. The grilled veggies are romaine lettuce, red onions, red and yellow peppers, and greek olives. Oh and i ordered a cone of their outstanding fries. Love this place!

I hadn’t intended to eat here but people keep crashing on I-95 and causing traffic delays so we arrived to the adjacent hotel late. The children wanted to eat in the hotel room but I wanted a sit-down dinner in a restaurant, and I have bigger muscles. We had no problem getting a table at 8pm on a Friday. Great for us, not ideal for restaurateurs — and should be cause for introspection. My biggest complaint is the apparent difficulty the waiter had conveying beverages from the bar to our table. Whether it was a martini or a glass of wine, he seemed unable to grasp the concept that the drink was not going to bring itself to us. I watched, heartbroken, as the waiter meandered around, averting his gaze from drinks sitting on the bar as if the bar was Medusa. Ultimately I was forced to get up and acquaint him with the concept of beverage delivery, which has not changed since the days when I too was a waiter. The food was classic French bistro fare. They had an oyster special. I prefer my oysters naked but neglected to read that they were garnished with some kind of mignonette, so it’s my bad. The Onion Soup looked proper and got a thumbs up. The Beef Bourguignon was devoured. My Steak Frites hit the spot. We passed on dessert because the kids said they didn’t want any, though I suspect all they cared about was going back to the hotel room and using the WiFi.

Delicious French restaurant just a couple blocks from Union Station. Good service; in true French fashion, the waiters tend to hang back and let you enjoy you meal, as opposed to hovering over you, They let you take your time, won’t rush you, only bring the check when you ask for it. Food was wonderful. we had the quenelles appetiser: crispy outside, creamy inside, in a heavenly sauce. My wife had the bouillabaisse: she marveled at the delicate flavors, and sopped up the broth with the accompanying toasted baguette. I had the best bourguignon: it was tender, seasoned correctly and accompanied by fresh buttered noodles, and went perfectly with the Malbec I chose. We shared a crème brûlée for dessert and, although there were more ambitious items on the dessert menu, it was prepared with care and presented artfully, and tasted perfect. Would love to return the next time I’m in the area.

I arranged a dinner here following an event with my organization. I downgrade this review primarily because despite the fact we were bringing in a lot of business and had given the restaurant advanced notice, they placed our somewhat large group in the middle of the dining room at two separate circular tables. This may in part be due to the fact that the staff member took down the wrong number when I made the initial reservation, so by the time we re-confirmed, they hadn’t prepared for our party’s size. In any case, there were square tables in the back of the room that were empty the entire time we were there and could have been pushed together for us. The dinner went fine for the most part, but participants would have certainly preferred to sit at the same table, or at least in a quieter part of the restaurant so they could hear each other. I wouldn’t normally hold this against a restaurant, but establishments of this level usually accommodate, especially if the patrons are going to be paying a big bill. My only other downpoint is that the Risotto au Pistou(which seemed to be the only vegetarian entrée) had about five small pieces of vegetables on it, and was otherwise all risotto. I love risotto as much as the next gal, but was expecting slightly more vegetables given the description. It was, nevertheless, delicious, as was the fresh Beet Salade au Citron. The biggest high point was the service, which was very friendly and attentive, managed our somewhat large group exceptionally well, and was able to time the dishes just right even though we had some late-comers. And then there was the Mango Crème Brûlée — absolutely divine.

2.5 stars and I rounded up. We ate breakfast here during a weekday stay at Hotel George. Pros: — hostess was warm and helpful throughout our meal — food was decent Cons: — service was terrible. Service was slow throughout meal, wait staff were absent from dinning room for long periods, any request was begrudgingly accommodated. For example, I walked over to a waiter to ask for butter and he directed me to another table I could take the butter from. — pricey

Totally enamored with the Hotel George. Not quite as enamored with the adjoining Bistro Bis. The atmosphere is homey, but the prices are a bit steep. And the service was a little slow despite the relatively small number of folks in the space on an early Saturday morning.(About 20 minutes for a biscuit). However, I must admit that once the biscuit came, it was pretty delish, and tasted«made to order.» Overall, not a bad deal if you have one of the Kimpton«breakfast for a dollar» credits to use towards your meal. Otherwise a little steep!

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time at Bistro Bis. From walking in the door we were greeted with a warm welcome from our hostess and was quickly brought to our table. Our waiter Norman was very friendly and attentive throughout the meal. My boyfriend and I were celebrating a special occasion and he surprised us with some thoughtful treats to round out the brunch. The food was excellent. I had the steak tartare, braised pork belly and a raspberry pastry for dessert. Each had a great balance of flavor and the presentation was clean. My only negative that I have to mention is I felt a little mislead by our waiter regarding some pricing. Norman was wonderful in the art of upselling but was sharing the wrong information to guests. First he mentioned that for restaurant week the meal was 5 courses for $ 22(including wine, appetizer, entrée, dessert … And a mysterious 5th course?). Of course this is wrong. We ordered a bottle of wine with his suggestion but just assumed that it would be discounted based on what he mentioned. Nope additional $ 40. Also, after we ordered Norman said«would you like some bread before your appetizers arrive?» «Sure why not!»…well it kinda took us by surprise that this bread basket was an additional $ 7.50 added to our bill. This was not on the menu nor mentioned to us. So for a restaurant week brunch for two people, we walked in thinking we would pay $ 60 tops it ended up spending $ 110. Again, great upselling skills but it just left a bad taste in our mouths because it was a bit misleading. Again, Norman was an awesome waiter, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was relaxed but refined. Highly recommend but please be clear with your pricing.

3 of us were looking for a fancy restaurant in Capitol Hill to try during Restaurant Week lunch and stumbled upon Bistro Bis. It was delicious and an overall great RW choice. The menu had a good variety of appetizers, entrees, and desserts, which was great because we got to order and try different dishes. For the appetizers, we got the french onion soup, the pork pâté, and the beet salad — I liked the salad and soup, but the pork pâté was definitely the weakest. For the entrees, we got the pork belly, risotto, and lamb stew. The pork belly was a little too fatty but still good. For the desserts, we tried the mango crème brûlée, apple turnover, and peach cobbler — the crème brûlée was definitely the winner. Service was great throughout the meal despite it being fairly crowded(make reservations beforehand!). I would be open to coming back here, especially because there are not many other nicer restaurants closer to Union Station.

Gah, I loved their steak. I forgot how much I love French restaurants. They got their pomme frites and fancy shallot butter. Lordy, I tore through that perfectly medium-rare meat with reckless abandon. My colleague had the bouillabiaasissse(sp?) and he left nothing behind. I think they could’ve plated another on a dinner on his perfectly-cleaned dish, done so with the bread. Before all this we had the scallop app and ham app. I wasn’t big on the ham app, but that scallop dish has a billion different flavors going on, but each noticeable and complementing the others so well — slightly sweet sherry, freshness from cilantro and tomato, and salty with a little ham. I’m drooling now(more than usual) thinking about that scallop(tho). dmo out

I’m a fan of Bistro Bis’ food. I came with a few friends here during restaurant week to check out what this place was talking about. I ordered the beet salad, duck confit and a flourless chocolate cake as dessert. The presentation for all of these dishes were on point. The dishes were portioned appropriately so you didn’t get overwhelmed by any course of the meal. Beet salad: The salad was rich, crisp, nutty, and tangy. It served as a palette cleanser and help the taste buds flowing from the acidic and crispy taste of the salad. The raspberry purée on top took the cake. The duck confit came well seasoned and cooked.

Really enjoyed the food and the ambiance of this place, but need to doc some stars for the amount of time everything took. We ordered everything around 12:30 pm, appetizers came around 1 pm, and entrees didn’t come until 1:30 pm! It was in the middle of the day so we couldn’t stay there for more than two hours, and had to skip dessert because of the time crunch. That said, the food we did get was very good. I started out with the french onion soup, which was delicious, and a very large portion. For entrée, I got the rabbit, which was great, and the gnocchi that came with it was amazing. The other guests got the duck and they seemed very satisfied as well. Would be a great place for a business lunch if they got the time issue solved.

A deceptively large and exceedingly comfortable restaurant hiding behind the façade of the George hotel, Bistro Bis delighted us with great food and friendly, utterly non-snooty service(thanks Steve). Quiet enough for conversation, good cocktails and 3 taps if you prefer beer, but entrees are $ 23 – 37 so come prepared. Right after your drink the gougères arrive, just one per person, nicely warm and more than a hint of cheese in this puff, a great nosh with a glass of vin rouge. Myself I went for the rye whiskey ‘boulevardier’ which was a generous pour in a huge rocks glass, fair at $ 11 and I really enjoyed the sweet vermouth in the mix. Do you have room for an appetizer, an entrée and dessert? I have to say no — the entrée portions were not stingy. My dining companion opted out of salad and in for coq au vin, an enormous plate of tender dark meat with pearl onions, whole mushrooms and wide thin noodles, classic bistro fare, one of the specials that eve, $ 28. I headed for the deep and got scallops, four enormous and nicely seared round treats on top of the oddest risotto I’ve ever had, made with faro instead of rice and studded with chunks of celery root and apple. Tasty, $ 29. Vegetarian rating: 3 stars for the interesting appetizer and entrée choices. I was sorely tempted by the heirloom carrot salad app($ 12), and the beet salad looked great too. For an entrée there’s noodles with mushrooms, cheese and sage butter sauce. This is far, far better than most Frenchy places! Did we cave and order dessert? Oh yes and here’s my French word of the day: gateaux is cookie, an impossibly thin and crunchy chocolate cookie in our case, separating layers of panna cotta from hazelnut gelato and pearl-onion-shaped pieces of pear, terrific, $ 11. So go to Bistro Bis, it’s a bit of a splurge, right on the border between $$$ and $$$$. Service was great if a bit slow, then again we told the man that we were in no hurry and he gave us plenty of space. This is the house restaurant for the George so they’re open for breakfast.

Came here with a friend for Restaurant Week. Was very happy and would definitely recommend checking it out. Apps: We got the mussels and the beet salad for appetizers. The beet salad was small, but very interesting, if you like beets. The mussels were delicious. I should have asked for more bread to sop up all that brothy goodness, but I knew I needed to save room for our entrees. Entrees: She ordered the coq a vin, and I ordered the lamb. The chicken was good, but unfortunately, and maybe this was because it was restaurant week, it didn’t blow me away. The lamb dish was excellent. Beautifully seasoned and falling apart, with a delicious fruit mash, and little raviolis completed the dish. I was happily satisfied. Dessert: We got the two chocolate dishes: a chocolate mousse and a white chocolate cake. The chocolate mousse was the best one, and perfectly capped off the dinner. Drinks: We also enjoyed a «restaurant week priced» bottle of Malbec, which paired quite well with both dishes, and was an appreciated suggestion from our server. Service: Lastly, our server was super friendly, informative, and just a perfect fit(with his French accent, and all). If their prices scare are a little high for you, then check this place out during restaurant week, but if not, this place is a must!

At $ 20 a plate for their LUNCH menu, I expected more. The food was very good, but with the exception of the sea bass, it didn’t blow me out of the water. We had the beef(meh, and stringy), rockfish(very standard), duck(sinfully fatty), and the sea bass. The sea bass au curry was creamy but was an unusual and delicious taste that I hadn’t experienced before. Also, the portions were TINY! They were served on gigantic oversized plates, but there was barely anything on them. Each meal was about the size of my hand(not spread out). A coworker of mine mentioned that she preferred coming here for dinner, since their lunch menu is very limited. I definitely agree. There were only about 8 entrees to choose from, and only one vegetarian entrée. That said, I will concede that the service was great. I wanted for nothing. My water was always full, they were able to rush the lunch so I could get out in an hour, and they brought a complimentary dessert selection when one of the table guests told the waiter that it was her birthday. Would I come back? Probably not. Not just because of the small portions, but also because of the corporate atmosphere. I want to go someplace that I feel comfortable, but it was all just too formal.
