Christopher Kim’s Men’s Wear & Tailoring

I had an oversized designer coat that didnt have a good fit and wanted to get it fixed. You could tell he knew what he was doing. Despite his age he was a workhorse measuring, pinning and so on one person after the next, the unflattering reviews about him not bending down and such… I wouldnt pay too much attention. It was not cheap but I expected it and with a piece of nice coat it’s an insurance it would be done right. Mr Kim is legendary for a reason. I was very happy with his tailoring.

Extremely high quality work. Extremely expensive. I will definitely go back, but mainly for the tough stuff.

I have never had a worse experience at a tailor, or almost anywhere for that matter.
I went in to get a pair of pants hemmed and Mr. Kim directed me to the fitting room. I told him I believe they needed to go up an inch or an inch and a half. He agreed, bent down, and without measuring hastily stuck a pin in. I told him it was a little too high and politely asked if he could adjust accordingly. He immediately said, «No. You do it.», pointing to the pin.
I gave him a quizzical look and he responded, «I have a bad knee. I won’t bend down again, not for a $ 20 job. You mark it.»
The problems with this situation are:
1. As a «professional» tailor he can’t and shouldn’t just eye a measurement then refuse to correct the error.
2. While wearing pants, you can’t accurately adjust a pined hem yourself.
3. If someone pins a hem while not wearing the pants, it defeats the purpose of going to a professional.
4. If you’re unwilling and unable to provide a service, as in the case, for a price that’s not enough for you to do it, why provide it in the first place?
I was planning on purchasing two pairs of pants there, which would have probably made it worth his while to assist me. Ironically, they would also have needed to be hemmed.

I bought 2 custom suits from
that needed alterations I called ahead to see if they would do the alterations, the person who I talked to just said come in. So after making my trek across the city, I get there and he refuses to mark what alterations he would make on the form that I needed to get a reimbursement. I had several other suits that needed some alterations, I’m not taking them here.

If you buy good clothes, you really need good tailoring. The tailoring you will receive at Christopher Kim’s is as good as you will find in DC (or anywhere else, for that matter). Mr. Kim and his shop do a lovely job, and you get what you pay for. It’s not cheap, but you are buying quality.

Mr. Kim is a consummate professional and a master tailor. He not only makes an exquisite product (the suit that he picked out and tailored for me is far and away the best suit I’ve ever worn); he provides an exceptional customer experience. Warm, gregarious, and extremely attentive, Mr. Kim makes you feel like you’re the only person in the store. After just a few minutes of working with him, you’ll realize that you’re in the hands of a craftsman (the Jiro of tailors, if you will) — someone who has honed his masterly skills after decades and someone who continues to take tremendous satisfaction from his work.
Go to Mr. Kim to remind yourself what it can be like to interact with a professional at the very top of his game.

I had a bad experience. He charged me $ 250 (which I though was very expensive) to slightly alter a jacket. He got it wrong twice and, when I finally brought it to my HK tailor, he explained that Mr. Kim had cut too much into it and ruined it. My HK tailor had to order new fabric to fix Mr. Kim’s botched job. I was left with $ 250 less and a ruined jacket.

Excellent attentive service and great work. Very professional and timely delivery. Price in the higher end, but you get what you paid for.

I had the pleasure of having Mr Kim work on restructuring shoulders and body fit for a Canali suit, comparing it to a SAMs Hong Kong suit I brought in. He is humble, skilled, and highly communicative on best practices and fits. I would not only recommend him, I believe he sits within very high within the international tailoring market.

After taking some time to clean my closet I remembered that I had two dress pants that I’ve been meaning to have tailored because the length was a few inches too long. I’ve been dragging my heels on having them hemmed, and so I asked around and checked for some 5-​star Unilocaly love for tailors downtown and walked over to Christopher Kim’s on M Street.
Mr. Kim saw me right away, checked the length, and confirmed my suspicion about the length of my trousers saying, «It’s too long.» I asked for cuffs on the pants and he said that it’d be $ 25 for each pair.
I came back a week later, tried on both pairs, and they were a perfect fit. I’ll definitely come back for tailoring and also to try on a couple of their fedoras. 4.5 stars!

Mr. Kim is a very experienced tailor and will ensure the fit is perfect. I trust that whatever garment I bring to him, it will be done right — and it always is.
After seeing the impressive work he did to my husband’s tuxedo and suits, I started bringing my clothes to him as well. His prices reflect the quality of work; if you’re fixing a garment that you care about, you may as well spend the money tailoring it properly.
Mr. Kim also goes the distance to ensure that his customers are satisfied. On a recent occasion, I had a bridesmaid’s dress altered and I waited until the last minute to pick it up, and when I went home to try it on I had altered it too tight and had a mini meltdown. I called him just as the shop was closing, and he told me to rush over, and he’d fix it overnight. I picked up the dress right before my flight the next morning and of course it fit perfectly.

This man is a genius, when it comes to tailoring! Customer service is awesome as well and price is reasonable. All in all, a great service

Mr. Kim is the finest tailor in Washington, if not the region.
I have been using his services for almost 4 years and have never been disappointed. I have taken a half dozen suits to him, jeans and sports jackets and all have been delivered on time and perfectly altered.
He has slimmed down jackets, altered hems and cuffs and always finished on time and ensured that I have been satisfied with the final product. If not, he fixes it for free.
One visit to Mr. Kim truly demonstrated his professionalism a couple of years ago. I used an internet bespoke suit company and the results were less than what I had expected or been promised. I went to Mr. Kim who gave me a sound assessment. He recommended sending the suit back, rather than just taking my money and trying to save a suit with good money after bad. Had I asked, he would have done the alterations, but it would have doubled the money that I had paid for it. It is this level of professionalism that makes me continue to return to Mr. Kim.
If I had children, I would ask him to be their Godfather.

I went here based on a coworker’s rec, backed up by the Washingtonian, to get a bridesmaid dress altered. I was definitely a little worried about going to a men’s shop to get a dress done but the work they did was perfect. I’ve never had a dress altered before, and I was stunned by how exactly it fit after a few pins and chalk marks. I found Mr. Kim to be extremely kind and friendly in his own quirky way, and he was always very clear about where his hands were going. When I picked up my dress and tried it on, he had a big grin, and he was very kind as I was checking out.
I also appreciated that he was very straightforward about why certain alterations needed to be made, and how this would affect the cost. For instance, both side seams had to be taken in (this dress was huge), which meant that the zipper had to be removed as well, and he had exact prices for all of those. The price did not change from his estimate to the final, and he gave me a first-timer’s discount of $ 15. I found it to be a little expensive (I’m a girl on a budget), but it was great work, done on time, and in downtown D.C., so I was expecting the prices.

Needed several suits altered and based on the Washingtonian «Best of» article I chose Christopher Kim. Mr. Kim knows his stuff. I was in and out of there in less than 15 minutes, had my suits back in a week and the fit was perfect. He is a straightforward talker and will tell you exactly what needs to be done to make your clothes fit right. While very expensive, if you have to get your suits tailored, this is the place in DC to get it done.

Went to Christopher Kim to have a tuxedo tailored for a wedding. The work was excellent and fast (I needed substantial alterations done quickly), and unlike some of the other reviewers I actually found him to be very friendly. When I brought the tuxedo in and asked him for recommended alterations, he identified the exact things that I had anticipated (no more, no less). Unlike other tailors I have used in DC, he gave me clear, straightforward pricing right off the bat, and a discount as s first time customer. He guaranteed the work would be done to my satisfaction and said he would fix anything at no additional cost if I wasn’t happy — this was not necessary as the tuxedo came out perfectly on the first try.
Overall, very good and I will definitely go back for alterations of other suits. Note that he is not cheap, but I think his prices are fair for high quality alterations of men’s suits in DC. If you just need your pants hemmed, go to your local dry cleaner and same some cash. But if you need more complex alterations for a nice suit, go see Mr. Kim.

I had to alter my wool slack and vest since I was losing inches the past couple of months. Mr. Kim was professional and very direct but friendly in his own special way. I think he did not want to disappoint my boss. To tell you the truth, I think he sort of likes her because he keep asking questions about my boss and her father.
I received my clothes back within a weeks time. He did a great job because the slacks and vest fitted perfectly.
I highly recommend Mr Kim’s establishment. The next time visit this place, I’ll look at some of the suits and vests.

Hidden gem of a tailor. Mr. Kim’s first impressions will not gain him any personality points, but I found it’s better to let this expert do what he has been doing for decades.
I did some shopping around to get alterations to a two piece suit I was given that fit me rather loose, which took me to Mr. Kim’s. He has a very direct, business-​like attitude about his work, which was not cheap. But his high rankings in the Washingtonian (2010 Tailor of the year) compelled me to give him a shot. He pointed out several areas I hadn’t thought of altering, reinforcing the idea that he knew what he was doing. The jacket and pants fit perfectly, as if it were a custom-​made suit. I got so many compliments on the suit that I returned with a second.
Mr. Kim can definitely have an abrasive personality, but his high quality work speaks for itself. If you’re looking looking for a tailor (not a buddy), Mr. Kim is as good as it gets.

I can only speak for men’s wear, but Mr. Kim has repeatedly done well with items I’ve had tailored. He shop is remarkable in that the alterations are done well and leave no trace.
In a particular instance, he tailored a woolen overcoat which had been turned down by a few other tailors. There was little additional material for alteration and the material itself was difficult to deal with. The coat came back almost form fitted.
Last, his prices are not cheap, and his personal customer service style lacks a certain warmth or charm. Nonetheless, his laser focus is on your clothes and making them fit well.

He is quite the tailor, but he does not seem to care about what you have to say. I brought my suit there to have it tailor and he he did his job quite well and incredibly fast.
I could never imagine ever buying a piece of clothing from the store, it seems like all of the clothes have been there since the early 80’s and periodically stored in moth balls to ensure that the store smells like an old men’s closet rather than an overpriced men’s store.
If I were in a situation where I need a suit tailored quickly, I would come back even though I paid probably double the normal service the first time.
