Drs. McMackin & Zimnoch PC

Dr McMackin should be the model of every doctor — smart, incisive yet incredibly personal and responsive. If I can’t get an immediate appointment with him, I can get one with his staff, and he responds promptly via email. If I could give ten stars I would — dr McMackin and his staff are the best I’ve found.

Great experience every time. My family and myself have been using this practice for two years now.
From the personal emails sent by Dr. McMackin and PA Dustin with any results or for queries, to the nurses and front desk staff, we feel very comfortable with this practice. Scheduling appointments with Dr. McMackin at short notice is sometimes a challenge, but I’ve found him easily accessible via email for any important questions and Dustin a great alternative for office visits — he is extremely thorough.
All in all, great practice and one that we hope to have a long term relationship with.

I am in the process of moving to DC and spoke with the receptionist to set up an initial appointment with one of the MDs. Sadly the receptionist was exceptionally curt and rude. Offered to give her my new employer’s group number and advised her that I would be starting work on November 16^th. She told me she would not help me until after I started work. I immediately let her know that I was unhappy with her approach and advised her that I would be looking elsewhere for care and would be be posting a review on Unilocal.She said «fine» and hung up. All the negative reviews on here are very accurate unfortunately.

I love Dr. McMackin. First general practitioner I’ve felt comfortable with as an adult. He identified a chronic condition I had no clue I had, and has been great at helping me ease into managing it. Front desk staff is excellent as well, and I really enjoy being able to manage appointments and health records through the online portal.

Trying to schedule an appointment is impossible. the staff answers the phone and says they don’t have time to talk to you and will call you back. Twice. They never call back. So I think I will look elsewhere.

My colleague recommended the doctor (Zimnoch), so I called their office to schedule a check up.
I first called a few weeks ago, and the receptionist lady asked me to wait till she calls me back. I waited many days, but no one called. So today I called their office again. This time, another lady picked up the phone and told me to wait for their callback. I asked why she could not just schedule my appointment now, she simply said she could not put me on hold and asked me to wait for them to call me back.
I explained what happened last time (no one called me back), and asked her if this is their standard practice — not being able to schedule appointment over the phone. She got upset, and hang up !! I am not going there, nor am I going to call them again. Totally a waste of my time!
I think the doctors are losing patients because of the rude receptionists.

This review is primarily for Dustin their PA as I haven’t seen a doctor here yet. But he was great during my standard physical. I appreciate not feeling rushed and he seemed willing to take as much time as was needed to answer all my questions. He seemed knowledgeable on all the areas I asked about.
I also appreciate that this is a modern office. No more coming in to pick up test results, notes are all electronic, billing was efficient. Maybe I’ve spent too much time in old school doctors offices, but these things make seeing a doctor much more convenient.
The office also seems well managed. The front desk ladies were all extremely friendly. Like more than you would expect. I was also in getting checked up within five minutes of my arrival. I appreciate that they weren’t wasting my time lingering in the waiting area. Finally, it’s just a convenient location if you live in downtown dc. Close to DuPont or foggy metro stops.

I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Christopher McMackin if you like being treated «like a number» after seven years of loyal patronage.
If you are looking to feel like you’re a burden to your primary care doctor, he’s definitely your guy.

Dr. McMackin’s practice also offers zero-​tolerance appointment cancellation fees (and that includes if you are 10 minutes late because of a Presidential Barricade).
If you want to get decent response times from the doctor or his office, or communicate via email, they offer a subscription pricing plan (in addition to what you would normally pay). So if paying extra in order to get service that’s standard elsewhere is your thing, call them today!
Oh, and you can have an array of 100% guaranteed rude support staff available to you for when you feel like getting some attitude on those annoyingly-​perfect days. They can even give it over the phone!
In all seriousness, I have no idea why my husband and I continued to be patients of his year after year after year after so many instances of being like «WHAAAA?» Maybe it was the nice, modern office? Or just familiarity? We were probably just in denial.
The truth is, Dr. McMackin is great at writing prescriptions and lightning-​fast visits. Everything else just leaves you feeling like you aren’t worth his time.
And speaking of time, it’s time for my husband and I to move on to a better GP and I suggest you do the same!

Dr Zimnoch hearkens back to another era where doctors actually had unhurried, personalized appointments as the norm.

The Best Doctor and Visit Ever… The long awaited search is over!
Going to a Doctor’s office can be stressful… but trying to find one compatible to your needs, personality, and temperament can be even-​more a daunting task. From the mundane task of research requiring reading about their qualifications, education, certifications, recommendations, associations… and everything else ending in «-ations!»…How does one deduct reasoning and just get to the point of choosing someone???
Well, after researching online, scouring the internet, holding up the cashier line at the grocery store… reading «Washington Top 100 Doctors Magazine!»…Yes…because I’m cheap and did not want to buy it… I ultimately was exhausted! LOL!
Finally, the light bulb went off to check Unilocal and of course… I was lead to the right Doctor by chance. It was not until I went onto Unilocal,read probably 100’s of reviews and opinions that I narrowed my pick down to… Dr. Christopher McMackin, M.D. All I can say is one word…“Thorough!” From the moment of making the appointment for a routine physical to getting my lab results… he was very prompt, detailed and attentive. He has a great disposition too. I never felt rushed during my appointment nor did I feel like I was not being heard. I came to his office with a ’ Santa Claus Christmas List’ of questions and he stood there and answered them all. That was the litmus test for me. If he could put up with my weird idiosyncrasies and have the patience to withstand me over exaggerating the slightest thing; he had to be the one. Right then and there, I knew my search for a Primary Care Physician in DC was over.
I went in on a Friday afternoon for my physical and to my surprise; Dr. McMackin had already sent my physical and lab result outcomes to me the very next morning! Yes! Saturday morning at 10:28am to be exact! I received a summary write-​up on my visit and a copy of all my lab results. I was really impress and could not believe it. I assumed at least a couple of business days would pass by before hearing back from him. Well, it was less than 24 hours! Way to go. Not only did he summarize all my results by electronic communication, he also explained all his points and the results by phone. I literally called today and asked for him directly to discuss my results. I was forwarded to his office and not a voicemail. After seeing many other patients since my last visit, he remembered me specifically and every detail we discussed. Now that’s the real deal and the kind of model I think a lot of DC Physician’s may want to take notes on. There was no wall between the Doctor being accessible to you it seems in Dr. McMackin’s office.
If you are looking for a Primary Care Physician that is genuine, listens, very knowledgeable and don’t seem to count you as a patient number just to collect on your corporate medical benefits… then Dr. McMackin is your man! The office and facility was impeccably clean, the front desk and billing staff were friendly, and the waiting area was comfortable.
I have nothing but good things to share regarding my visit last Friday. I am just mad that it took me 3 years… to find Dr. McMackin and finally get an updated routine physical performed! I know… Don’t ask… It’s a man thing I guess. If it doesn’t burn or hurt to the extreme… we think we are fine and tend to avoid something as simple, but very important to our health and well-​being, as a routine physical.
Never again… I am sold on Dr. McMackin’s office!

Dr. McMackin has been my primary care physician for about 6 or 7 years. Dr. McMackin is pretty thorough in everything he does. Since the change in the front desk person about a year ago, made a big difference. All of the staff seems pretty nice, but the change was a long overdue.
The office is comfortable. I never have to wait more than 10 – 15 mins… if that. Over the past couple of years they have gotten a little busier. So, there is a chance that you will see Dustin, the Physicians Assistant if it is a last minute appointment. I like the PA as well, but for my annual physicals, I think I want to stick to Dr. McMackin. Not for any other reason than I like Dr. McMackin. I would definitely recommend Dr. McMackin.
I’ve never seen Dr. Zimnoch. So, I can’t really speak for him.

Dr. McMackin is a great doctor, and Dustin is a great P.A. Their last P.A. was kind of a jerk and I almost stopped going to the office because of him, but he’s moved on. The office staff are very friendly as well and getting an appointment is never too much of a problem. Overall I’m very satisfied.

I have been seeing Dr. McMackin for years and have recommended him to several friends. He provides great and efficient care. If he is not available his Physician Assistant Dustin is great!

Dr. McMackin is excellent — I am rarely motivated to write a review on Unilocal,but during my last checkup I was struck by his excellent bedside manner and his thoroughness. Unlike many doctors I have seen in the past, I did not feel like he was rushing through my exam and was also surprised that he did the whole examination (aside from weighing me and drawing blood) himself — including taking my pulse and blood pressure — things that I other doctors have delegated to nurses in the past (not to denigrate nurses in any way, just to emphasize that I didn’t feel like I was inconveniencing Dr. McMackin just by being there).

Dr. McMackin is a thoughtful and thorough doctor. He responds swiftly to questions via email or phone call. His treatments always work, and he is someone I’ve come to trust. It’s rare that I need to visit my doctor, but when in need or just for a check-​up, I’m very satisfied and he and his team have helped me lead a healthy, active life.

I total share the same experience as in Bryan’s and others comments.
Dr. Zimnoch failed to follow-​up with some important laboratory tests I left three messages at the front desk, and sent three emails, over the course of five weeks. Every time, the front desk people says Dr will respond TODAY, but I just waited in vain. To make things worse, the office still has not acknowledged my request for my medical records, which are now needed by my new doctor, to follow up on my treatment.

After having been a patient of Dr. Zimnoch for several years, he failed to follow-​up with some laboratory tests, causing me to switch to another doctor. I left three messages at the front desk, and sent three emails, over the course of six weeks. To make things worse, the office still has not acknowledged my request for my medical records, which are now needed by my new doctor, to follow up on my treatment. In addition to that, my new doctor has had to duplicate laboratory work performed by Dr. Zimnoch, for which I have had no follow-​up or results. Because of the bizarre nature of this «radio silence,» naturally I began to believe a personal emergency had intervened. However, a colleague of mine, now a patient of Dr. Zimnoch — thanks to my referral — confirms that he is in fact at the office and treating patients.

I continue to be very impressed with Dr. McMackin and have recommended him to multiple friends and colleagues.
They actually added a new receptionist who is very pleasant. All in all, it’s a good experience.

I liked Dr. Zimnoch and I really wanted to stay with a small office like his, but I finally left because I couldn’t stand his staff. The turnover seemed to be quite high because there was a new person every single time I went there. The reception staff is horrible. I wanted to punch them in the face every single time. I needed to see Dr. Zimnoch right away and did not want to go to the ER, but his receptionist did absolutely nothing to fit me in. It was, «the doctor has no openings.» That’s it! I wanted to punch her out so much. They also did stupid things like schedule me for when Dr. Zimnoch is out and took zero responbility for screwing up when I came to my appointment and Dr. Zimnoch wasn’t in. I finally got fed up after a couple years and found a new doctor.
Dr. Zimnoch himself was a great doctor, though. He always listened to me and I returned my calls the same day. He also referred me to really good specialists.

I really like Dr. Zimnoch. And the little I’ve interacted with McMackin via phone, he’s extremely nice as well. I guess I don’t have a ton of health problems so I’m not in very often, but when I am or when I need something quickly via phone, they get back to me promptly. Dr. Zimnoch is extremely reasonable and is very good at listening. He never rushes you, which is pretty great.
People complain about the front desk at this office in other reviews, and I can understand these comments but I don’t agree with them. I don’t think they give the best impression at first all of the time, but they have been 100% effective for me and I appreciate it. They can be a bit terse to deal with at first, but when they warm up to you and get to know you, they are the best staff you could ever hope to have on your side. As I mentioned above, they always call me back, work me in, and really go out of their way to help me out. Plus, they usually hope that I’m feeling better, which when you’re trying to push through some yucky cold or whatever, just makes you feel good all by itself. You can tell that they are super genuine.
This clinic does have a concierge style policy, so if you pay a monthly fee you can get a better level of service which is essentially same day service and having the doctors on call all the time. Because I don’t need a lot of care from them, I haven’t opted in. But I would if I needed more access.
