I love fried fish, especially trout this place does it right and all of the sides they serve are excellent.

Saturday night Bill was too busy to chat with a packed house but the orders came out quickly and efficiently. I tried the sides for the first time and was super pleased though the reviews are mixed on them. I had in no particular order 1 lb. of fried shrimp, 3 large pieces of fried trout and 1 order of Mac n cheese and 1 order of candied yams. Plenty of hot sauce and mango sauce to go around. I found everything super good and done well and I have eaten it over a 3 day span !!

Being from the South, I crave fried fish all the time but am apprehensive of trying it here in DC. I actually rode by this place and was like wtf. But I am so glad I decided to try it. You get to pick out the fish and filet you want. The pick it and weigh your choice in front of it. Fish was fried perfectly but could’ve used a little more salt and pepper. Sides were great. Fries, Mac and Cheese and Collards. Really, really good. The wait was long but worth it. I would suggest calling ahead so you won’t have to wait like I did. If you do wait, you’ll probably leave smelling like fried fish.

Super friendly service accompanied by amazing, fresh seafood! Recommendations: fried catfish and green beans. The mango sauce they have is delicious, but not necessary to get extra of. You get to choose which filet you would like to devour before it is cooked… Can you do that at a fancy 5 star restaurant? Nah, bruh!

Awesome lump crab cakes, served with a butter pan-fried bun if you want to sandwich them. Limited seating, cash only, service a bit slow, no beer. Crab cakes make up for it.

Got here at 11:20 the worker said they opened at 12. At 12:36 they were still closed with multiple workers present. Didn’t even have the decency to come to the door and let the patrons know what’s going on.

The whiting I had was battered and fried to perfection. Their potato wedges are awesome as well. Only reason why it’s not a 5-star just yet is because I haven’t tried their other sides. But this place is great

Visited on 8÷3÷15. Hole in the wall with lots of seafood. Ordered the fried tilapia and a pound of fried oysters. Both were very good and gigantic. Sat outside at one of the two tables/benches and watched traffic go by. Highly recommended. Not exactly cheap but worth it. The corn bread side was amazing.

I was craving fish on Saturday and I decided to go search Unilocal.I was so happy that FIDH came up. I walked in and the staff was very nice. I had no idea that I would be picking my own fish. That was really cool! I will definitely go back for my next fried fish fix. The mango sauce alone was worth the trip. Pick your own fish and be happy.

Where do I begin… What a amazing amazing piece of BROILEDSALMON!!! I do not think I have had a better cooked salmon anywhere !!! From little hole in the wall to big fancy 5 stars restaurants… I have tried it all and this, by far is the best broiled salmon period!!! Good food takes time. I watched them put the salmon on the grill … Watched them carefully cooking it with love. Then season… Then the broiler… What a master piece. Well seasoned and crisp on top layers, juicy, moist and soft on the middle layers and bottom layers cooked just right. It’s salmon heaven. I think it was a 2 pound slab… I finished it in minutes!!! It’s a must have for anyone who loves broiled salmon. I also ordered their fried black bass. Nothing special. Just like any other fried fish… can’t go wrong when it is fresh~~~ 4 stars instead of 5 stars review is because the fried fish didn’t knock me out of my socks as I have had better. Now let me talk about their CANDIEDYAMS!!! It’s crack! It’s insanely addictive. Chunks of yam soaked in butter and sweetness… it is the best I have ever had hands down. That’s all I had… And I would definitely go back again when I am in the area.

It wasn’t what I expected from all the reviews… Got in the service was great!!! As I was waiting… I sat down, and looked to the left… And what do I see??? A roach crawling up the chair next to me… So I didn’t freak out to much, because I’m sure those are in many restaurants that we just can’t see… Moving on. I get my food; eat… And no taste. I got the whiting fish,(bread that came with it was stale), and the macaroni and cheese… Which needed some Seasonings as well… It was just bland. I waited like 3 weeks to get to this food… And it was just ok…

Why does this happen when I am trying to diet !? I had the BEST fried shrimp and trout that I have ever had in my life. I love fried fish and am a connoisseur of sorts in my head. The fish was super crispy on the outside but the crust was light enough not to be overwhelming. The inside was light and moist and perfect. The shrimp was amazing. Butterflied and split down the middle. The crust o both were so perfect and complimentary. The icing on the cake was the mango sauce. Bill the owner suggested that I use it on the shrimp and it was delectable. It is not a sweet sauce. It is smoky and creamy with a hint of the mango. It is crack lol. I also ordered a crabcake to go and cannot eat just yet but I ate a corner and it tasted sublime as well. It is large and comes in an open bun. Everything was fresh and artfully done. Iced tea/lemonade mix was perfect as well . Bill the owner was personable and friendly and managed to welcome our group and joke around and talk to us while managing the multiple orders that were coming in. I LIVEFORSHOPSLIKETHIS !! you can tell he is passionate about the food. It shows. I will be back. Thank the Lord I do not live closer I would be there daily.

Why is it always the smallest and hole in the wall type of places that have the best of foods. Hankering for some fried fish after watching Man vs. Food DC, I happened upon this place and immediately wanted to go next day. Although this place wasn’t the one visited by the show, it led me to see what other fried fish places in the area. Thank god for that. As you walk in, you can browse the fresh selection of fish there, pick one and have them fry it up on the spot. You can get it broiled too for the more health-conscious. Since we walked in just before the downpour, we wanted comfort food and ordered the fried catfish, mac and cheese and collard greens. This was the first time trying collard greens, a very southern dish, and apparently they were done right. Need to come back again and very soon too! However, be sure to bring cash.

The fish here is fantastic! Fish in the Hood is a neighborhood place on Georgia Ave that is both a restaurant and a fish market. When you get there, you can choose any of the fish in the case and have them fry it up, broil it, or you can just take it home and cook it yourself. I highly recommend having them fry it up for you. WOW it’s delicious. So fresh, so crispy, and so juicy. Clearly Fish in the Hood knows exactly how to prepare their fish. The fries and mac and cheese as sides were also absolutely delicious. The employees here are friendly, helpful, and even when they’re absolutely slammed, get things out in a pretty timely manner considering everything is made to order. The restaurant itself has only about 5 or 6 seats inside at the counter, but they do have some outdoor seating on the patio.

Food was good, prices are a little high and it’s hot in there, customer service lacked luster. Fish looked fresh and tasted good, green beans were just ok, nothing spectacular, but the mac and cheese was amazing! I would go back here.

Fish in the hood is a great seafood place. You get to pick out what you and then they will either fry or broil it. They recently built a nice area to sit outside. I love the scallops, crab cakes and potato salad. Everyone that works there is very nice. Don’t forget it’s cash only!

This place is life changing!!! After spending a longggg day at Medstar hospital with my boyfriend we were hungry and wanted to grab a bite in DC. A nurse had recommended fish in the hood since it was nearby. Let me tell you about FRESH. Fresh is when they take the fish off the ice right infront of you, weigh it, and throw it in the fryer. I’m not a huge fish person but I do love me some salmon, tilapia and trout on occasion. Thanks to Unilocal I tried the catfish, my boyfriend wanted rockfish but they were sold out for the day so he got catfish as well. BESTFRIEDCATFISHEVER. The crust was perfectly fried, crunchy while the fish was still moist and flaky, sweet and mild. So bomb. The mango sauce is on point if you like to dip your fish, I could have easily gone through two. I definitely recommend getting the Mac and cheese as a side — also a hit. Had a brief conversation with the owner who’s pretty hilarious and very kind. We will absolutely return very soon… Maybe after his next doctors appointment ;)

Not much to look at from the outside(or the inside for that matter), just some of the freshest take-out you’ll find in DC. This small space is filled with large cases of fresh fish on ice, priced by the pound. Choose your fish(from a wide variety of boneless and bone-in options), watch your selection weighed before your eyes, choose your desired prep(fried or broiled), choose your sides, and wait while everything is made to order. I had a pound of black bass with yams and collard greens. Went the Lion’s across the street to grab a six-pack and bottle of wine, and when I returned my order was ready and waiting. Went home to enjoy some of the best fried fish I’d ever had. And the sides were incredible as well; the yams were fresh and sweet(without the crutch of cinnamon and marshmallow that so many others rely on), and the greens were every bit as good as my grandma’s. They also have non-fish items like clams, scallops, and crabcakes. As well as non-seafood items including chicken, pork-chops, and desserts. I don’t know what took me so long to check this place out. I can’t wait to go back, there’s so much to try. NOTE: Prices for sides aren’t listed, but they’re about $ 3.25 each.(Get the freakin’ yams!) Sauces are $.50 each.(Spring for the mango sauce.) They’re definitely worth it, but it’s good to know in advance to avoid the sticker shock that a couple ladies in line ahead of me experienced.

I found this place after a quick google search for fried fish eateries in the area. I read the reviews and thought that it would be worth a drive from Fairfax to see what all the hype was about. And boy, It was soooo worth it! I wasn’t fully prepared because I didn’t know that it was Cash Only. No problem. They have an ATM inside even though I opted to go into the CVS up the block. Everyone was very friendly, both staff and customers, and they didn’t mind explaining how the ordering process works since I was a first timer. We purchased the tilapia and whiting fillets and they were AWESOME! The fish is cooked to order so you will have to wait but there is a tv and again the people are friendly, especially the owner/cook Mr White! So I didn’t mind. The portions were enough for us to share and have left overs. The yams were just like home. The mac n cheese was good and the coleslaw was a great compliment. I’m not a big fan of everyone’s tartar sauce. In fact, I usually make it myself when I fry fish at home. However, their tartar sauce was very good! The mango sauce as well! I am originally from the Deep South and I have been in this area for about five years now and not until this day did I feel that I had FINALLY found a good fried seafood restaurant. I have not had fried fish/southern food this good anywhere else in the area and I have tried quite a few to include Oohs and Ahhs and Horace and Dickies. No one compares! I will definitely be back in the near future and I suggest anyone else to give them a try too! It’s worth the drive! PS. Don’t be scared off by the prices either. You do order the seafood by the pound but for three sides and our fish, it was still only $ 22 including tax. Not bad at all for fresh seafood cooked to order!

Seriously a nice and beautiful hidden gem in the Petworth Area! If you are a fan of seafood, especially fried, I would definitely recommend this place in a heart beat. Space The place is actually really small with only two tables to sit at and probably max occupancy of 20 people. Reminds me of a tiny fish market. Food A good variety of seafood to choose from. You can buy by pound and have the option to have it fried or steamed. I ordered half a pound of catfish with one side of collard greens(10.50) while my friends ordered a few other things. ***If you just want one fish, say 1 so and so. If you just say you want one order of catfish, they will give you a whole pound and it is way too much for one person. Favorites Catfish — really loved this fried. I was indifferent to the steamed or grilled or whatever you call it. The seasoning is perfect and highly suggest it with the MANGO and Tartar sauce!!! Collard greens — super tasty and juicy, one of my favorite sides besides the fries. Not a huge fan of the mac and cheese — needs a lot of seasoning! Seasoning jars — there are a lot of seasoning jars on the counter so use as much as you want! Overall, this place is really really tasty and great for a quick lunch or dinner. The owner and staff are super nice and accomodating as well! Every order comes with two slices of bread and will fill you up for just 10 dollars! See you soon fish in my neighborHOOD!

I am a fan. I like being able to point out which pieces of several varieties of fish I would like and have them cooked to order. The coleslaw is also pretty good, although somewhat pricey at $ 3 for something that usually comes with this type of food. The seasoning is minimal but adequate, especially since I am very sensitive to MSG and I don’t get headaches when I eat here, unlike places that overuse seasoning salt. There are a couple of tables but it is generally a carry-out place, sort of divey. I think the Fish in the Hood would be a little more appealing after a deep cleaning and updating paints and finishes… but if it will make the food more expensive, no thanks. I think the prices are pretty fair; neither inexpensive nor expensive. My major complaint is that I love fried rockfish and they rarely have it available in fillets. I often get trout instead, which annoys me because they always have a bunch of whole rockfish I have to stare at while they’re preparing my order. What a tease! It’s nice to save money but I’d definitely get rockfish if I could. I would even wait an extra 10 minutes for them to cut one up but they say«no rockfish» like it’s gone. Oh well.

YUMMY! Fish in the Neighborhood is a cash-only eatery that is owned by Mr. Bill White(who is FREAKINGHILARIOUS and oh-so-CHARMING!!!); there’s an ATM machine inside or a BoA down the street. This place has been around for about 16 years, and it offers a nice selection of fresh seafood(he uses E. Goodwin & Sons Inc. of Jessup, mostly locally-sourced) where you get to choose what/how much you want(behind the glass casing on ice), and they prepare it for you(fried or broiled to order). They have Bone Fish(black bass, white bass, butter fish, croaker, ling, porgies, spot, and tilapia), Fillet(catfish, trout, perch, whiting, salmon, rock, and pollock), Seafood(clams, oysters, scallops, shrimp, and jumbo crab legs), Poultry(BBQ chicken wings, fried chicken wings, and lemon garlic chicken wings), Pork(fried pork chops), and various Sides(candied yams, french fries, potato wedges, coleslaw, potato salad, seafood salad, cabbage, collard greens, string beans, mac & cheese, beans, black beans, and stuffing). Remember, some items may not be available, so just look and ask! Mr. Bill has this secret seasoned cornmeal crust that is AMAZING. I had the catfish fillet(fried); my husband had the fried chicken wings; we shared shrimp(butterflied/deveined; fried), the crab cake(broiled), as well as a side of candied yams, potato salad, collard greens, and mac & cheese. I loved the catfish, as it had a perfect crispy crust that was wonderfully seasoned, and the fish itself inside was very nice and moist. Great with the hot sauce/tartar sauce/or naked on its own! The shrimp was also delicious, as it had a lovely batter to it as well; I actually used this Thousand Island-looking type of sauce that were thrown in and it was perfect! My husband enjoyed the chicken wings, as it was also perfectly battered and fried, seasoned well, and great with the hot sauce. The crab cake was also well-seasoned and not too much filler within. The candied yams were not overly sweet and less syrupy; the potato salad was solid(had huge chunks of hardboiled egg); the collard greens were quite nice and well-seasoned; the mac & cheese, I wasn’t much of a fan of, as it wasn’t as thick/creamy as I usually like it. I think the next time, I would probably douse my entrees with the hot sauce available or ask more of the hot sauce/sauce containers. There’s not much of a dining area within, as the place itself is quite small; there is a small counter, so if you really want to dine in, you can, but would be up to 2 people. Everyone comes in here to do a carry-out. There are some outside seating available(3 tables), so you can eat al fresco if you wish. I would definitely come back and want to try out their fried pork chop, the bbq wings, as well as their other seafood(like the clams, the croaker, the scallops, etc.). Definitely check them out! :D +fried shrimp +fried catfish +fried chicken wings +collared greens +hot sauce bottle up at the counter, if you want ‘extra’ dousing on your entrees before you leave +don’t forget the Thousand Island-type of sauce for your shrimp: D P. S. They also have a container of free Jimmy Hats up at the front for the taking.
