Food was great but service was TERRIBLE. We stopped by for brunch on Saturday. We ordered the Spanish Tortilla and the Pork Carnitas Hash — highly recommend both. We ordered Bloody Mary’s but I’m not even sure it had any vodka in it. It took 15 minutes to be greeted by our server, Ryan, who didn’t even spend a few seconds to introduce himself and the another 15 minutes to get our waters. The only reason I know his name was because the greeter sat a table behind us and I overheard her. He checked on us when we were almost done with our food and dropped off the check without asking if we wanted anything else. We figured, okay maybe he’s in the weeds inside. Nope. There was not one table inside when we went to use the restrooms. Maybe our server had an off day. Maybe not. Do not care to come back here when I’m in town next time.

Can’t comment on the food at all because we never got served. Five us of us(3 teenagers and parents) walked in to a almost empty place at 430 and after getting a dirty look from the hostess got seated several minutes later. Then we sat there for just over 10 minutes being completely ignored. No water. No «Hi, I’ll be right with you». Nothing. A group of 20-somethings came in after us and a waitress went over to them almost immediately. Much to the embarrassment of the teenagers, we walked out. Went right next door to Tune Inn Restaurant & Bar… Great service and delicious food! So glad we walked out of his place.

Handled my sisters rehearsal dinner quite well. Food came out warm and tasty. I could see that it might have some service snafus in my other visits that weekend(I stayed around the corner) but overall seems like a fine place to grab a bite or brunch. Better than the reviews would lead you to believe

Where to begin… the server simply ignored us when we were sat and was asked by the host, another person that seemed to hate his existence today, to wait in us. We waited a full 15 minutes at this point. His conversation happened in full view of us and the server shook her head and said she didn’t want to wait on us! The host asked talked to someone who was on the cell phone in the office, who walked up to the original server that was asked and she subsequently came over. You can imagine how great the service was as she had the effervescence of a tree stump. We waited another 10 minutes for our drinks, two beers, a Pepsi and a lemonade. There were zero people at the bar and our drinks could be seen sitting on the bar for 9 of the 10 minutes we waited. The food was average but add-on items were of course forgotten, then they were brought twice. We sat in he middle high top table and could see our food sitting in the pick up window for almost 10 minutes. At the very end of that time, my dish, the Hawk Burger, was taken because it apparent was made incorrectly. Magically this time it was made and served in 3 minutes flat! Terrible experience, terrible service.

Nice enough for a quick drink. Clean well decorated interior. However the prices on food and drinks were noticeably overpriced compared to other bars in the immediate area. I’ve been to them all so I should know.

We stopped in for a quick drink/bite on a Saturday afternoon so they may not have been at full stride yet but I was left unimpressed. We only had drinks and an appetizer so it shouldn’t be that hard to get the job done, right? We had been out walking around all day and decided to duck in for a break from the sun and to hydrate. We sat at the bar and the 3 – 4TV’s were all set to sports. Good start. They have Corona Light on tap which earns major points from the lady. I had a Diet Coke and we ordered the homemade chip N’ dip. The chips were bland as was the dip. I was really craving a snack and this app just failed so miserably. Be sure to skip this if you swing through. The bartender was a nice guy and gave out a sampling of the beer for my gf to try before committing. Points earned there for sure. Would maaaaybe be inclined to check this place out again for a full meal down the road. Maybe.

The food and drinks were great. We had the sangria(white and red) along with the Chesapeake crab dip and chips and dip. Unfortunately the service was not great. We’re visiting from Miami and NYC. They took forever to bring our drinks and the server brought us the check before we were even ready. Then we were passed onto another server who was nice but also brought us the bill before we were ready. At that point we decided to leave since it was the second time. Great food and drinks, poor service.

I like Guinness and this place serves it not on nitro. Still charges $ 8 a glass. I asked why and they don’t know. Go next store to Tune In, Better choice.

Pretty lame. Long wait for beers ordered with dinner. Wrong beers came. They insisted light colored beers were stouts. Turned out to be Boddingtons. Waitress and bartender had no clue about beer. I had to go to the bar to resolve. The beer lists were not up to date. No communication between bar and wait staff. Total mismatch between menu tap list, the chalk board, and reality. But insisting that Boddingtons was a stout was the capper.

Great brunch, awesome bottomless mimosas and some stuff is a bit expensive like a shrimp appetizer we had with 3 shrimp for about $ 11. It does have a friendly environment.

This place should be called Horrible and Don’t Go!!! The service is absolutely terrible! Our waiter was so focused on the television he couldn’t explain the specials to us, also our drinks were so flat… I could go on and on and on!!! Please save your money

Food is not good and the service is very poor. We went in the late afternoon on a Saturday and it wasn’t busy at all, so there was no excuse to be ignored by waitstaff. We had appetizers, food, and drinks. There are too many other places around here so I won’t waste my time giving Hawk n Dove another try.

Unilocal says it’s not good for kids, but I disagree, at least during the day. Pretty good kids menu for a nice pub.

A solid performer with slightly elevated pub grub at a decent price point. The service is friendly and efficient. Menu is pretty extensive. Interior lacks any real personality — especially if you were ever at the original Hawk n’ Dove before this most recent build out. Sound level is high — mostly due to music which added nothing to the dining experience. For Hill residents/workers only. Not worth a trip from another part of town or area IMO.

I’ve been here twice. Once for drinks and once for dinner. As a relaxed place for drinks it was great. The drinks are delicious and unique and not exorbitantly priced($ 10 for a cocktail). The food was good, not great but good, not really good enough for the price. The service was not great. They mixed up our order and our food was ready before our appetizers, which ended up meaning our apps were undercooked and our food was starting to cool. Twice was enough for me, I don’t see myself going back.

Well, went it for lunch on Sunday with my family, won’t be going back. The service was terrible… slow, slow, slow. As someone who used to work in the industry, I know the weekend between X-Mas and New Years is hard to staff, but if you’re going to show up to work, you at least have to try… We had a server who wouldn’t make eye contact, even while standing at the next table. Waited 45 minutes between appetizers and lunch, another 20 after they cleared the lunch plates before dessert(just ice cream, how hard could it be!) finally appeared. Drinks also took forever. The food was OK, nothing special. The old H&D made surly an art form(in a good way, most times), but this was just sad.

Let me start with. I’m not one to complain about a server. It’s rare that I send food back. I’ve been in the business… But this service was terrible. We went mid-day Sunday for a late brunch. They did look a little understaffed, having to wait to be seated(no one else waiting) and waiting 10 minutes to be greeted with«are you ready to order?» No introducing his name. No «Sorry for wait.» I ordered the cheeseburger, which the menu described as a single party with potato bun, my partner the eggs/pancake/sausage, with the pretzels as a starter. The server said okay and started to walk away, and had to be stopped to ask for a coffee and a Diet Coke. It didn’t look like the place was that busy, but they sure made it seem that way with the extended wait times for service. Drinks came 10 minutes after we ordered. No apology. The starter came out with the two entrees, which wasn’t what we requested, and the burger he put in for was the double party hawk burger… Not what I asked for(also requested no tomato. He didn’t listen to that either). He didn’t check back on us until near the end of the meal… Even though he was servicing several other tables around us. The burger was incorrect and looked closer to medium rare than medium, complete with a super soggy bottom bun. No stop back to see if we wanted refills, no personable service– nothing. We did ask for the burger to be taken back and removed from the check«hawk burger was $ 3 more than what I had ordered. The manager came to the table and she was the only one to say«sorry.» Then the long wait began to get the check to settle up and leave. I had to go in to request it and that took forever. The server brought the check and didn’t apologize for a single thing. The items were removed, however. I paid, and then spoke to the manager again, to let her know just how bad the experience was. Karen apologized again(sorry goes a LONG war sometimes) and invited us back on the house. Long story short: personality works wonders, efficiency saves time, attention to detail is key, and a simple empathy and the word«sorry» can usually solve a lot of problems. The only thing saving this from a 1 Star was my boyfriends sunny-side up eggs and pancake and the pretzels. But how hard is it to screw those two items up? I don’t know if I would return, even if the meal was free.

This spot was just OK. Went there to catch late evening dinner the service was kind of weird not bad just disjointed… at one point everyone wanted to help us then we could not find anyone for napkins or a drink. The burger was good but fries were cold. She had the prosciutto pizza which was great. The place looked nice but didn’t have any soul /umph !!!

I had a good meal and a good time at Hawk and Dove and am surprised by their low rating. Service was good and the building is very large and nice. This is a great place for meeting many people. I had the chicken dish which was portioned perfectly and tasted pretty good, nothing too special.

Football fans beware! Although the hawk portrays itself as a football watching locale, this is merely a pretense. No football specials, no sound/volume for games downstairs, and very very disappointed that despite the fact that over a dozen patrons were there for the steelers-niners game, despite the fact that there is DC’s #1 pats bar down the block, the manager decided to only turn on the patriots game upstairs. Seriously disappointing. Regardless of you team, GOTOCAPITOLLOUNGE instead — it’s a much better football experience, with much better management. Hawk and dove is a big disappointment, unless you want an overpriced brunch. Oh, and very lame vegetarian/vegan options for what that’s worth. Bummer.

I miss the old Hawk but at least this place doesn’t smell like urine anymore. The service is just plain bad. The food is standard. Sit at the bar and you will get excellent service. But if you sit in the audience, so to speak, you literally have to raise your hand to get water. Want a decent brunch with decent service? Go to Tune Inn.

I’m surprised at the low reviews for this place! My friend and I stumbled upon H&D after realizing we had already been to Beuchert’s and wanted to try something new. It was nearly empty for Sunday brunch which worried me BUT my fears were put to rest. First off, the bottomless mimosas are phenomenal. There’s like 5+ different flavors you can try and our waiter just kept them coming. And i remember the place being really good in comparison to other places. So this alone earned the place 5 stars. Our server was amazing. The set-up at the waffle/omelet bar needs some work. The sweet toppings were next to the savory options so there were onions in the strawberries. And the head chef was making everyone’s entrees and also manning the waffles and omelets. It just seemed to be a bit chaotic. And sometimes they brought out your omelet and sometimes they didn’t so you didn’t really know whether to wait there or stop hovering. But, all in all, I really liked the place.

So, I should be able to like this place. Close to home/work, old-pub feel with new-pub clean floors, trendy décor(I hear this place has been re-done recently-ish). But ugh. No dice. We came after work for some food and drink after a long day. Seated inside immediately– it was probably ½ empty. Waitress was very nice and took our drink orders, which we got relatively soon. Then didn’t see again her for a while despite wanting to order food, but maybe she was busy. In general she was hard to flag down. So not great service, but not terrible. My problem here was the fare: I had a Hendricks martini– I know well drinks are a great deal here, but gin and I have a special relationship. At any rate, it was an ok drink, not great balance but fine. It was under poured – like ¾ instead of full drink, but I thought«eh close enough, it’s been a long week». But when the bill came, it was a $ 15 drink. FIFTEENDOLLARS. Holy. Shit. This is crazy-town. For food: I got the hummus, which is reasonably enough priced, but really mediocre– and it this weird aftertaste, like the way hummus does when you’ve added too much lemon juice and it’s starting to go old(like a little bit of a «fizzy» taste– my hummus people, you know what I mean). So ok but not great service(waitress VERY nice but not really there when needed), ridiculously priced and mediocre martini, and mediocre hummus. Not planning on returning.

Decent little pub on Capitol Hill has an extensive beer list, good food and friendly service. My crab cake sandwich was better than I expected, and our server did a great job handling our large party. Hawk n’ Dove may not be one of the best restaurants on the Hill, but it’s worth a visit if you’re looking for a cozy neighborhood pub with decent food and a good selection of brews.

What you will NOT receive during your dining experience: Iced-ice tea. The ice tea was served at room temperature and without ice. Warm food. With a party of 7 only 2 meals were served warm. All other plates were served at less than room temperature. One was sooooo cold it had to be returned Eggs benidict. Ordered 4 orders of eggs benidict and only 2 eggs were cooked correctly(out of 6) the other 4 were prepared overhard. Quick service. It took 45 minutes to receive our food. There were only 2 sets of guests in the whole restaurant. Do yourself a favor and eat elsewhere.

I like that this place is tucked away and quiet enough I could hear my friend across the table when we were talking. I think I’m getting older because I can’t stand loud music at a restaurant. I liked their pigs in a blanket with their side of cheese sauce. They were the mini-kind and I was hoping it would be regular sized. But other than that I really liked that they had cheap beer and good food.

If you are ever looking for a great spot for a mid day lunch in the city then Hawk and Dove on Pennsylvania Ave is your spot. It is walking distance from Eastern Market and sits right in the heart of Capital Hill. Enjoy the pub like feel and quiet atmosphere as you chat it up with your friends. Although the sliders were just ok there was a variety in slider choices, beef, pork, chicken or salmon and you get to pick three. You can’t and won’t go wrong with the woodfire oven bacon and mushroom pizza. It is absolutely delicious and was a hit at the table. Save room for dessert and try the seasonal cobbler or bananna bread pudding if you like nuts and are feeling a little nutty. The New York Cheescake is tasty but it has a unique flavor specific to Hawk and Dove. #fallynsfoodieexcursions

I test my coffee shops with vanilla lattes, so naturally I test restaurants by their artichoke dip. Though I have had better, the dip here was pretty good. Very artichoke-y, so if you’re more about the cheese on top, I’m sorry to say you will be gravely disappointed. However, if you are also a fan of pizza, you, at be a fan of this place. I don’t remember what the name of it was, but there was onions, mushrooms and artichokes on it and it was great! The atmosphere is also a win. If you sit on the bottom right from when you walk in, there’s two huge paintings that take up the wall, on of a heard of elephants and the other of donkeys with silhouettes of famous politicians from both sides. Not only that, there’s plenty of room at the bar downstairs and upstairs(making it a great place to meet a big group of people). Overall, an adequate choice for after work drinks and/or a meal. It’s the atmosphere that really makes it!

Yes, I am one of those who mourn the loss of the original Hawk n’ Dove. It’s not so much that they cleaned the place up, it’s that they eliminated the two separate rooms that made it two distinct establishments in one location: one for the«Hawks» and the other for the«Doves». The restaurant group that purchased it back in 2012 spent something like $ 3 million refurbishing the place, and sure, it’s a lot cleaner and there are still two bars, but it’s just not the same. Now, instead of the seedy upstairs«disco» that used to attract a lot of Marines from the Barracks(and was one of the few places you could«dance» on Capitol Hill) there’s a mezzanine. The downstairs bar seats 21 and you can tell just by the chairs that it’s the handiwork of Xavier Cevara(Boxcar Tavern, Lola’s, etc.) There are 18 fairly pedestrian drafts including Yuengling and Blue Moon. Saucony Creek’s Maple Mistress was the standout, and made for a nice fall offering, but was a bit pricy at $ 10 a pint. So, what does $ 3 million get you? A lot less charm and authenticity in the reviewer’s opinion.
