Newseum

Plenty to see and will take a long time to get through. Probably would take two days to see everything. Enjoyed the FBI special exhibit. A must do while you’re in DC.

I am surprised with how highly this museum’s rating is. There are some interesting and novel artifacts to be seen such as a section of the Berlin Wall. Overall, however, the newseum was underwhelming and not worth the rather steep admission price in my view. The building is gorgeous, but there is so much wasted space that the exhibits are marginalized to just the corners of each level.
I would recommend going to almost any of the Smithsonian museums prior to visiting the newseum. You will learn more of consequence and you will learn it in a more engaging and interactive way than at the newseum.

First thing first: remember to buy your tickets online for a 15% off. We visited the FBI exhibit when visiting the Newseum. It was really impressive and educational. The exhibits on 911 was really really touching. I personally felt 911 meant something different to me after the visit. This picture I took broke my heart. «Phones kept ringing».

I saved this review specifically for my 100^th review. (Yay, 100^th review!) The Newsuem was my favorite museum from my visit to Washington D.C. It is captivating, informational, engaging, and interactive. I personally could have spent a full day in this museum as there was SO much content and I wanted to read and absorb everything.
I read negative reviews from some other folks knocking this museum because it was less about the events the and more about the news coverage. I think those folks missed the point. This museum is called the «Newseum» for a reason. It is dedicated to the COVERAGE of the events and how news has matured, developed and progressed over time.
This museum was $ 22.00 to enter. Admittedly, that is a hefty price tag, especially considering the Smithsonian Museums are all free. I believe the entry fee is WELL worth the price of admission based on what you receive. As I mentioned earlier, there’s SO much engaging content and you can spend a long time in this museum if you want to see everything.
There were so many outstanding exhibits. Here are some of the highlights:
— The daily front pages from newspapers in all 50 states and around the world are displayed. It’s interesting to see what each state and country feels is front page news. Front page news covered all sorts of topics including War, Economics, Sports, Politics, and more.
— Reporting Vietnam — This exhibit chronologically documented the coverage of the Vietnam War, and how domestic sentiment gradually shifted from positive to negative.
— The Newseum had a historical gallery of newspapers dating back five centuries, and the newspapers covered an extremely wide range of topics based on the time and place.
— Civil Rights — they had a section dedicated to the coverage of the 1960’s Civil Rights movement.
— ⁹⁄₁₁ — one of the most moving exhibits was the ⁹⁄₁₁ exhibit. It document the real-​time coverage of ⁹⁄₁₁. They also had the front page newspapers of every newspaper around the world. They also had a twisted piece of the antenna from the WTC.
— World News Gallery — they had an enormous map documenting how «free» the world’s media was. I will post a picture of this map — it’s really not surprising to see which countries have free media.
There are many more exhibits, but this review would run forever if I named everything. I could have easily spent the entire day here. The Newseum is an absolute MUST visit.

My boyfriend got us free tickets here from his alter mater (WOOT WOOT!) and we were able to check it out before the tickets expired. It was so worth it! There is an entrance cost, it is about $ 20 for adults but trust me it will be totally worth it.
The exhibits here = marvelous and interactive. Unfortunately we did not get to stroll through them all, however, I loved the ones we saw! Here are some of my favorite exhibits: the Pulitzer Winning Photos, Reporting Vietnam, and Terrorism (I forgot the name, but it is about terrorists attacks). I also really loved the short documentary on investigative journalism in 4D (i believe it is called 4D… technology is changing too fast for my mind to keep up. Anyways, it was super cool! your chair will move and people and things will pop up at you from the screen).
You can spend hours getting lost here. I would recommend going for 3+ hours to get the full experience. The building’s architecture is beautiful as well.

Very expensive trip if you drive here. All day parking is $ 10 and the entrance is pretty pricey. I kinda liked it, and people always want to go here, so, I went. Save your money and go to the National Archives!

Perhaps my favorite museum in Washington, DC, even if it is paid. I remember when this place was in Rosslyn, and it was amazing then, but this new location improved upon that, providing even more exhibits (such as the Berlin Wall) and space for entertaining local and private events.
There are so many different exhibits, which change at regular intervals. Exhibits are interactive and allow members and guests the ability to participate in the news making process at different points in the museum. I love the newscast stimulator, which is great for children and those wanting to try out any aspirations they may (or may not) have in front of the camera.
The admittance fee can be a bit steep, although it’s a deal if you think about it (because all the other museums are free, so if you average it out, this is a pretty good deal).
This is a MUST museum if traveling to DC for vacation or looking for something interesting to do. This place offers something for everyone at any age.

A truly amazing place to be.
Visiting the city and need to kill some time? Or maybe you’re a native just exploring the great things about DC, well The Newseum is the place to go! This museum has made its way to my top 5 in the city though nothing will ever top the beloved natural history museum (the elephant and T-​rex still stands strong). Yes it definitely costs to be here but the price is well worth it and you can come back the next day which you’ll need to do if you pan on seeing everything.
The exhibits are amazing and the view on the top floor is great if you aren’t too afraid of heights. My favorite part would be the front page exhibit where the front page of newspapers around the world are displayed and changed everyday. For the kids there is an entire floor dedicated to pressing buttons and playing games which i made good use of. For the adults there is an exhibit dedicated to all major criminal events that have taken place in the U.S. which was slightly depressing but informative. The ⁹⁄₁₁ and holocaust exhibits are real tear jerkers, one lady passed around a box of tissue to her family and myself.
The museum is also kind to the disabled, there are wheelchairs and walkers on the first level and elevators on every floor. In addition to that they have hearing/​visual impaired devices if needed. I don’t think anyone would ever walk away from the Newseum bored simply because there is literally something for everyone at this museum. I mean if you couldn’t find some sort of entertainment from here then i want to know whats wrong with you lol.

I’m a teacher. One of the perks of being ignored all day long is that people begin to feel sorry for you and let you into places for free (or give you free fast food one day a year). So, with my employee ID proudly displayed, I went to Free Unappreciated Public Servant Day (or whatever they called it).
I honestly don’t get the hype.
Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE museums. I’m a huge nerd, but I’m also a native Washingtonian. We’re spoiled into believing that museums and zoos are always free. That’s why it took me forever to go to this place. Even if it was free, I wouldn’t think that this place was that amazing.
The building is incredible. I have to give them that. The architecture and use of space is cool. The exhibits are okay, but in this digital age I can’t say that I’m that excited to look at old newspapers. There’s information about how news changed over the years, but even that feels like something that should be housed in a wing of the American History Museum. It just doesn’t seem like something that deserves an entire building… and $ 22 per person to go inside that building.
I’ll be the odd one out and give it an «A-​OK» rating. It’s not terrible. Not at all. It’s just a hard sell when everything else is across the street for free.

This was my second visit in the last five years and it was still great though not much has changed. That being said there is so much here it is hard to absorb in one visit (that is also why your admission is good for the day after).
Given all of the free Smithsonian Museums you might wonder why you would pay to visit this place… if you are interested in the topic of news: print, TV, radio, and the internet and its history this is THE place to go. The exhibits are very well done and the fifth floor alone is so dense with information it almost made my head hurt! And don’t miss the Pulitzer Prize winning photo section on the first floor behind the check-​in desk — very powerful.
There is too much great stuff at this museum to describe in one review but take my word, if you have not been here go on your next trip to DC!

WOW! This was my FAVORITE museum in DC! Im comparing to the dozen I frequented over the week. First off, I love how one you buy one ticket, you are buying for two days, I can see myself needing both days if I had all the time in the world.
I started with the orientation video on the bottom floor and decided to start on the bottom floor and make my way upwards (the museum recommended starting with the 6^th floor and making your way down, but I didn’t see why).
This was one of those museums where I wanted to read and do everything. There were many ways of digesting the information, interactive displays to the typical walk by and read the descriptions. The museum did a great job of showing how radio, print, tv, and the internet evolved, shared information, and how it could influence the general public.
I can not really pin point what galleries I like the most.
–The first floor had a gallery on award winning photos, where there was the photographer’s or some narration the the back ground of each photo.
–The ⁹⁄₁₁ gallery was well done and moving.
–I liked how Vietnam War was timelined. I was walked through how perception of the war changed over time.
–I spent a good hour replaying tv news clips from big event and the ethics game.
–Well done display on what Freedom of Speech means to journalists and how limited it is in other parts of the world. Their map is updated every June I thought I heard a tour guide say.
–One of the floors had a newspapers from each year since print publication first started. Interesting to see what some considered the biggest news of the year.
I could see this museum stays updated with current events, more than only the front pages each day.
If you’re willing to pay for one museum admission, make it this one, extremely worth it to feel like you’re taken back in time.

WOW. (Cap lock intended) One of the most fantastic and unique museums I’ve ever been.
Surrounded by the complex of world renowned Smithsonian museums which offers free admission, Newseum still shines brightly in its own way even with an admission sticker of ~$ 22. It is been on my bucket list forever and took me until the last trip to DC before moving to the westcoast to indulge and come here.
I planned for 2 hours and stayed for 5 (until closing) and still had to skip parts of the museum. Even before entering the museum, you’ll find the ‘Today’s Front Pages’ which is comprised of headlines from around the globe freshly printed and posted in the front of the museum every morning, quite ingenious idea. The Newseum itself starts with an orientation in the basement floor and then it is 6 stories of some of the most significant and captivating stories about news and news about stories through both space and time, presented with complete immersion and interaction in mind. It tells the stories of how media and press affected the outcomes and the aftermaths of many historical events, with visual, auditory, and tactile support. Much more than archives of news stories, but rather a witness account of history — from Lincoln’s Assassination to the VIetnam War to the Berlin Wall, it is as much a history lesson as it is a museum. There are also studio tours for the Knights studio (in house) and a 4D theater. Even the museum store rocks, really, some of the quirkiest yet cleverly designed items I’ve ever seen.
The ticket is good for 2 consecutive days, goldstar often has discounts so keep an eye open.

N.B.: My review is not for the museum itself but for the catering/​wedding services.
DC is not my favorite major city on the East Coast. But after attending by far the most fun wedding of my life and finding out that Dulles has a smoking lounge (I vape but support smokers’ rights and find it cheering to see a large, clean smoking lounge in an airport), I am warming up to the city just a bit.
The roof furnishes exquisite views of the Capitol and mall. It’s quiet and pleasant on weekends (the string quartet had no street noise with which to compete).
The cocktail party area is large. The wedding was in the 125 or 150 person range but the room would have accommodated much more. Everything – from the staff (it seems as though there is one employee for every five guests) to the views to the food – was perfect.
The couple both work in government/​civil service (government law or nonprofit or cabinet) and for a young couple in DC starting a life together, Newseum is ideal.
I wish I hadn’t had to leave at before 10 to get a flight back to LA. The DJ was good (though I am sure unrelated to Newseum) and it was just a day of pure bliss for the families and friends who flew from all over to see this terrific young couple marry.
I can’t speak to value. I have no idea what the wedding cost but know that the couple paid a large part of it with one set of parents paying more than the other. There were four entrée options: beef, fish, chicken, and vegetarian. The appetizers were all good but on the heavy side (crab cakes, fried cheese something or other). The potato gratin was more like a Daphinois and the caprese terrific.

Give yourself at least 4 hours here and more if you wish to see every movie. We spent that much and more.
One of the main questions you can ask about every non-​Smithsonian museum in DC is: Is it worth it compared to the free museums in the Smithsonian/​is the price justified?
For what can be seen here, definitely, YES. One of the most well thought out and designed museums I have ever entered in.
I think the better sections were the Pulitzer photographs section (movie is excellent as well) and the ⁹⁄₁₁ exhibit (genuinely heartfelt). The Berlin Wall exhibit was also interesting but not as expansive as the rest of the museum. Maybe the only thing not worth it is the tour of the studio. maybe, just because there is way more stuff to see than that?
I might edit this review to add everything I saw but quite simply, I don’t exactly want to write a full length newspaper article just to detail everything I saw here. It’s all well designed. It’s all well thought out. All of the movies were good. All of the exhibits were at least good and most were excellent. So many facts and so many different articles. Nice views upstairs as well.

This was by far, my favorite museum in DC. Not a freebie, but well worth the admission price. The ticket is good for 2 days and you could literally spend that much time there.
Located between the White House and the capital, it is a historical building. Was the sight of the hotel that John Wilkes booth stayed the night before he shot Lincoln.
The museum is all about the news media in history. It’s so large and jam packed that your first stop is a video describing all the different themed galleries. 15 in all and most are interactive with videos, games and even a 4 d movie. They actually make history fun so it would be a great place for school aged kids.
One of my favorite galleries was the tribute to all the news people who lost their lives during ⁹⁄₁₁. It was also the most emotional. They center of this gallery housed the broadcast antenna from the World Trade Center. Mangled twisted steel just moved me to tears. The video showed survivors and those who lost their loved ones. One photographer had called his wife and that would be the last time she ever heard his voice. They recovered his photographs of his last day on earth.
Some of the other galleries were Vietnam war, first amendment and a photographic gallery of the most historical times in history.
Plan on spending at least a full day here, you won’t be disappointed!

If you appreciate American history /​journalism, you’ll really appreciate going here. My favorite part was the rows of newspapers all in chronological order. I felt like I was walking through time from the 1500’s to today. They had every major event that happened in US history. They had articles from the Boston Tea Party, Attack on Pearl Harbor, Man on the Moon, to Obama’s election. I was at first reading the articles but realized I’d spend forever here! I actually had to spend 2 days to explore every floor.
Ticket is around $ 20 after a 10% student discount and is good for 2 days.
There’s a parking lot nearby. Around $ 12 – 15 for all day.

As a DC museum spoiled resident, I was slightly hesitant to pay $ 22 when I’m used to free admission to the Smithsonian museums. However, I learned quickly that the price of admission was well worth the visit. The Newseum has some absolutely breathtaking artifacts!
The most spectacular artifacts from my visit included…
–In the ⁹⁄₁₁ exhibit: The antenna from the top of the north tower of the World Trade Center.
–Berlin wall exhibit: Segments of the berlin wall, and a three story tall East German guard tower.
–Today’s Front Pages Gallery: The current front pages of newspapers from across the world.
–Newspaper Archives: Take a journey through the biggest headline news articles dating back to the FIRST printed newspaper!
In addition to those spectacular exhibits, there were interactive news broadcasting stations that would be excellent for kids! Equipped with green screens, these fun and interactive stations allow kids (and adults!) to pretend to be a news broadcaster! :)
Bottom line: A must see museum in DC.

Very cool museum! Not something that I initially thought I’d enjoy, and most people’s reaction to «a museum about news» would be something along the lines of «huh?» (I know mine was), but after hearing great things and discovering that the ticket is free every first full weekend of the month with a Bank of America credit/​debit card, I enthusiastically decided to go with my friend, knowing absolutely nothing about the contents of the exhibits.
And wow, was I pleasantly surprised! One of the first things I saw was a sizable piece of the Berlin Wall — one side filled with colorful graffiti, the other bare, and explainers on the ground about the divide between East/​West Germany. I was definitely starstruck– I did not think when I woke up that morning that I would be seeing such an amazing piece of history.
The other thing that really wow’ed me was the ⁹⁄₁₁ exhibit, with front pages/​headlines from a hundred+ papers along one wall, handwritten thoughts & comments from museum goers projected onto another, and the remnants of the WTC antenna in the center. Truly breathtaking and emotional.
Other things worth highlighting are the pulitzer prize photo section, memorial for fallen journalists (most recently James Foley/​Steven Sotloff etc…), interactive games/​activities, the 4-​D show (more educational than exciting), the Vietnam exhibit, free speech map, and the front pages from different countries on the top floor that are updated daily. There’s a ton of stuff here, My friend and I easily spent 3 hours at the Newseum, and that was with us trying to go through the exhibits quickly.
There was a quote on a wall in the museum that really stuck with me – something like: «The news is the first draft of history.» And it’s true! In this sense the Newseum is a history museum seen through the lens of American journalism.
The only reason I can’t give 5 stars — while I thought the Newseum was awesome, I don’t think I would pay the full $ 23 admissions fee (but I’m also a cheap recently graduated college student). That said, I will happily come back to take advantage of the Bank of America deal again and again.

Bottom Line: A seven floor museum that educates visitors on some of the most historically significant news events of the country and the reporters behind the coverage.
Whether you think reporters are heroes or evil villains, you’ll likely enjoy the rich history on display throughout the seven floors of Newseum. This museum is unique in that it mixes historical artifacts with technology. For example, you can see actual pieces of the Berlin wall but you can also «flip» the pages of «Great Books» such as the Magna Carta using touchscreen monitors.
Other than knowing the Newseum was large, I didn’t have any expectations but here are the exhibit and films that I really enjoyed:
-«Pulitzer Prize Photographs Gallery» where pictures are worth more than 1 million words — Amazing!
–Awesome artifacts like the Unabomber cabin and World Trade Center radio tower that was crumpled on ⁹⁄₁₁.
–Awesome views and photo
-«The Lighter Side of the News» film — «news» clips from shows like Saturday Night Live and other famous comedic shows. A nice place to rest your feet and get a few laughs in.
–Surprisingly, «The Boomer List,» portraits of 19 famous Baby Boomers taken by Timothy Greenfield-​Sanders.
–Watching museum patrons «Be the Reporter» and report on events around DC in front of the green screen. Unfortunately I was too shy/​lazy to give it a whirl.
Here are some general attributes about the Newseum I also appreciated:
— New and modern, wide open spaces, slim crowds
— Discounted tickets and coupons online (search using Google)
— Lots of theaters to rest your dogs
— Spacious and clean restrooms
— Cafeteria for a meal or a snack, or just some caffeine to keep you powered up for this huge museum.

This place is pretty awesome. Definitely one of the better museums in DC, especially since it’s FREE (see below). With 7 levels, 15 theaters and 15 galleries, there’s basically a little something for everyone. Be sure to hit up all the interactive stations.
I believe regular admission is $ 20, but BofA (Bank of America) has a ‘Museums on Us’ program that allows card holders to go to certain museums for free every month. Each state is different. In DC, it’s the Newseum. And it’s valid the first full wknd of every month.
Be sure to check out the beautiful view of the Capitol from the Pennsylvania terrace on the top floor. Don’t forget to bring your selfie stick!
And make sure to check out the ‘Be a TV Reporter’ section near the end. It’s quite hilarious. You can pretend to be Ron Burgundy, or you can try to be serious. I’ve seen some ppl that are really, really good. Go figure! After all, this is the capital. USA, USA!

Das Newsmuseum oder besser Newseum liegt nicht weit von der the mall genannten museumsreife in Washington und ist ein Muss. Über Dauerausstellungen wie z.b. Zur Entstehung und der Verbreitung von News u.a.journalistischen Inhalten, findet der interessierte Besucher das Photo of the year, 9.11 und auch einen originalen Wachturm der ehemaligen innerdeutschen Grenze plus ein Stück Berliner Mauer. Es gibt hier noch viel mehr zu entdecken Unbedingt ansehen. Einzige Manko: hoher Eintrittspreis von aktuell 23 $ pro Erw. Es lohnt sich das Geld auszugeben.
