PNC Bank

This branch is an absolute disgrace to customer service. I visited this location recently to acquire foreign currency for an upcoming international trip. After hopelessly searching the
website, I could not find any information on currency exchange rates and decided to visit this branch and gather more details. When I asked the teller if there are any charges associated with foreign currency conversion, she assured me there are no surcharges and you «get the exchange rate for that day.» I ordered the Euros from a separate PNC branch a day later, and upon picking them up, found out that PNC charged me ~$ 1.43 dollars per Euro, not the market rate of $ 1.34. This equates to a $ 55 uptick based on the amount of euros ordered! To put this in perspective, $ 55 is the equivalent of 11 ATM overseas withdrawals — something I would have never done, which makes this whole transaction a waste of time.
When I returned to this location to ask why I was charged such a higher rate, the teller informed me that PNC, like many banks, has its own exchange rate. When I questioned why that wasn’t explained to me, she responded, «You didn’t ask the question. You should have asked for the current market average was and how our rates compared.» I then followed up by asking how a customer would know to ask the right question if
has no information and the teller does not fully educate a customer on the cost of using the exchange services. She then started searching the PNC website to prove me wrong. After 2 minutes of searching the website, she conceded that there is no transparent currency exchange information; the website merely states a user should contact PNC for more information. Still at an impasse, her final recommendation was exchanging my money back to PNC. I politely and firmly declined as that would require another loss of money during the exchange. When I asked for any other solution, she replied, «Sorry, there’s nothing else that can be done.»
So let me get this right:
provides no transparency on foreign exchange services, then a PNC teller withholds information on the exchange rate charges when the customer asks, and ultimately blames the customer for not asking the right question? Thanks, but no thanks, PNC Penn Ave location.
