I had really high hopes for this place. I should’ve known from the repulsive stench upon entrance that this place was going to be bad. But no, I had faith in the testimonies of my fellow Unilocalers. *drops tear* The stench that slapped my nose at my arrival should’ve been off putting but I do know that this is what typically comes with«hole in the wall» establishments. So I held my breath and glanced over the dirty menu. I initially wanted the grilled chicken sandwich(it’s kinda hard to screw that up) but I went with Smokey’s signature wings and wedges. Boy was I disappointed. The taste of the food was the same as the odor I smelled in the place. I can’t put my finger on it. Maybe mildew, old grease, spoiled food type of smell. Not exactly sure what it was but it was bad. After taking two bites out my chicken and one bite from my potato wedge I was ready to turn my car back around, go back in, and demand my money back. But I took a simple approach. Folded up my box and bag and threw the food away. Sorry Smokey’s won’t be back.

The chicken wings were perfect. Potato wedges went well with the mumbo sauce. I didn’t check out what else they had but I will definitely be returning soon

This is a hidden gem of NWDC. Whenever I sneak away from my office and head uptown, Ms Angela Lee is there with a smiling face. She knows some folks by name. She recognizes me only because I come there once or twice a month. This is not a place that you want to come to if you’re watching your weight — but the food is good. The wings and potatoes are seasoned nicely then cooked in a pressure cooker! Yum! Yum! Yum! Make sure you get mumbo sauce for the wings. It’s a staple in many dc carry outs. This stuff is delicious!

I’d love to say that the food was amazing… However we waited in line for roughly 10 minutes to order and had to leave due to the smell of the place. I’ll defiantly give it another go down the road. However the entire place smelled like someone left a dead animal in the place for weeks.

Listen I have been going here my whole child hood life, and continue to go even today. Food is great, and you are always treated like family. Wings and fries are always on point, and the breakfast is banging. Its the neighborhood spot and everybody that’s everybody comes here

Yum-a-licious! I get the eggs with sausage and waffles. Reasonably priced, good serving size, perfect. They also do the potatoes wedges really well! Wings and potatoes with mumbo sauce are done really well, love it here! Down side they close kinda early.

I decided to visit Smokey’s today after reading the reviews I bookmarked it weeks ago. I ordered 5 wings and potato wedges with mumbo sauce and it was great. Reminded me of a chicken joint that was located on Florida Ave. for years called Kens which closed a few years ago.

Small little hole in the wall carry out that serves all day breakfast with a couple of other options readily available. There is a small bar that you can enjoy your food onsite but I consider this more of a take your food and go place. Staff was friendly, while I waited for my food, the two ladies making the food and taking orders appeared to be really comfortable with what I assume were a couple of regulars that were eating at the bar. Small menu but they provide most basic breakfast staples. I went with the chicken and waffle, two perfectly breaded chicken wings, nicely fried and well seasoned and an equally delicious waffle. Warm, buttery, soft and tasty. Don’t let the look of the place fool you, while the place isn’t anything to look at, the service and food are worth a visit.

The tiny little place with four seats and greasy orange floors has been in the Washington Post. Let that speak to the merit of the mumbo sauce and the crunchiest chicken wings and potato wedges. The owner has been working there about 15 years, but the restaurant itself has been in the family for about 47 years. Being from out of state, I had no idea what in the world mumbo sauce was, but boy am I glad I do now. Smoky’s makes some of the best mumbo sauce out there! They make it in house and it’s fantastic on the wings and potato wedges. There aren’t a lot of people sitting in the place, but if there are, they’re usually regulars. The line goes out the door though, people love taking their food elsewhere to nosh and get greasy, I’m guessing the privacy of their own homes. Definitely stay and strike up a conversation with one of the cute little ladies that work there though!

I’ve heard great things about this place for years. What a letdown! The chicken and potato wedges had no seasoning whatsoever and the mumbo sauce was odd(and I love mumbo sauce). My friend got the chili half smoke and described it as disappointingly bland. It definitely did not live up to the hype.

Great prices and pretty decent food. I went because I read a review that said this place had the best burgers in DC. Well, I wouldn’t quite say that. But, the prices are great. I actually found the burger meat pretty dry(preformed patties) and nearly stale buns.

5 stars for the sauce… that stuff is literally finger lickin’ good! The chicken was hot and fresh… not the best quality but good. We purchased some Mumbo Sauce to go… YES…it’s that good. They were super nice so for the sauce and the service… you get 5 stars. Being from the Midwest… having something close to Harold’s Chicken made my day! Very different taste(just putting that out there before my Midwest friends yell at me… we know there is only one Harold’s)! I will be back to Smoky’s!

Ok… This place is a hidden sandwich shop gem! A diamond in the rough! A needle in a haystack! Get the point!!! We were heading out for the day to the BIG Air and Space museum at Dulles Airport… BUT… We were on a mission first to retrieve a few items that were«Lost» «Left behind» Ok… Somebody(For once not me) left a few things on the subway! We were told to pick up these items at the 14th and Decatur Street Bus barn. Ok… No problem… As usual I was starving ! While waiting for the attendant to grab her stuff, I heard a guy working there say that they forgot his potatoes… He said to his co-worker that he will be right back. He was going to «Smoky’s»… Me: Potatoes Me: Hungry Lets go to Smoky’s! This little shop is awesome! The owner is a pleasant and always smiling Eun Joo«Angela» Lee. I walked in and just stared at the two page article from the Washington Post about this little shop and was just amazed! But first… Where are the potatoes that that guy was talking about? Oh! In a case by the register were wedge cut, battered and fried potatoes! Kinda like«Holly Farms!» Fried Croakers and grits! Scrapple! PORK!!! Omelettes! Fried chicken and Waffles! And just plain fried egg stuff! This place is tiny. I think there were 4 bar stools.
Breakfast sandwiches to go! Of course the country boy in me said Scrapple! After talking to the owner for a bit, I ordered a Scrapple egg and cheese sandwich on wheat toast and a sausage ditto sandwich. She asked me if I wanted jelly… Jelly? Nobody has ever asked me that in my south driving, truck-stop eating and going to life… I almost cried! Yes Please! Oh… And a side of potatoes please! We grabbed our stuff, thanked Angela and bounced! We headed out for the museum and forgot about eating for a bit… A few traffic stops later we remembered and opened up our stuff. The first thing that I noticed was that the toasted bread was firm… Not just firm but borderline solid! it was wrapped with wax paper and foil so you would think that the condensation would make the bread soggy. NOPE! I split the sandwich and grape jelly stared me in the face… AWESOME! A thick slab of crispy, seared Scrapple with a cheese omelette like just sat there between two slices of perfectly toasted wheat bread wonderfulness!!! Oh! But wait… POTATOES!!! Freaking AWESOME!!! Lightly seasoned flour and fried to perfection! You need to leave something on the subway and hope and pray that they tell you to got to the 14th and Decatur Street Metro Bus Barn to get yo stuff!!!
