I had a terrible experience at Washington Eye Associates and came here to see Dr. Garr. It was like night and night. Both the receptionist and Dr. Garr were professional, helpful and pleasant. Dr. Garr also did what she could to help me save time. She got the sense that I didn’t want to keep coming back for additional visits, and she recommended that we keep my current prescription so I wouldn’t need to return for another fitting for a new brand of contact lenses. Works perfectly fine for me.
All in all, I was very pleased and would definitely go back.

I really enjoyed my first experience with Dr. Garr! She answered all my questions and took some additional time to provide more context about my medical history.

Dr. Garr is wonderful! I have sensitive eyes but don’t have the money to shell out for daily contacts like other doctors have suggested. Dr. Garr listened and suggested weekly contacts instead — I was able to save money without sacrificing comfort!
Bonus — the receptionists are always so kind and welcoming!

Consistent with other reviews, Dr. Shustock work hard to get me to take new contact lenses, although I explicitly said that I am conferrable with what I wear, and it was difficult to impossible to get a prescription for the kind I’m using. But that’s the least of my problems with this clinic.
A month after visiting the doctor I received an $ 80 medical bill that I didn’t know what it is for. When calling, they said its for contact lenses I bought. I never bought contact lenses from them. They insisted that I came to pick them up from the office although I never did that. They just charged me and invented a story about contact lenses that I bought although that never happened.
Lastly, I was very disappointed from the fact that the office told me before my appointment that I am completely covered for the appointment only to find out after leaving Dr. Shustock’s office that they want t charge me $ 100 for contact lenses prescription. They could have been more up front with that.
I’ll choose a different doctor going forward.

Dr Garr is AWESOME.
I’ve been having pain in my left eye for a few days, and it got achier this morning. I called around to see if anyone could squeeze me in. Dr Glasser’s office referred me here. They were super nice and able to squeeze me in just an hour after I called.
The process was pretty quick– I was seen on time, and they did all the preliminary vision/​eye pressure tests and that flashy thing where they photograph the inside of your eye. Just a couple minutes later, Dr Garr called me back.
Honestly, I don’t know how she did it, but she managed to be quick and efficient, all the while super nice, even taking the time to walk me through the photos and explain what the different structures meant and why she didn’t see any cause for alarm. She answered my endless questions with kindness and enthusiasm, and did not make fun of me when I freaked out about having my eyelid turned inside out.
The staff at the front desk and the tech who did the initial testing were all incredibly helpful and the process was gloriously time efficient. I was in and out in about 30 minutes.
I’d recommend them to anyone!

Dr Garr demonstrates how much she cares by taking the time to explain the details in laypersons terms so you can understand what’s going on with your vision. The friendliness of the staff contributes to a great office environment that is conducive to customer service excellence. They give you their opinions regarding what frames look good on you.

I’ve been seeing Dr. Garr for several years and I am always very pleased with my exam exam experience and the choice of frames at Vision Source DC. Dr. Garr explains everything thoroughly, including any changes since your last exam. I really like the frame choices — lots of designer, modern frames. I highly recommend Vision Source DC.

I decided in the new year to have my eyes examined because it had a been a few years. After looking at a few places online near my office I settled on Vision Source because of the positive reviews on Unilocal.
I called to make an appointment and the staff was very helpful and accommodating — because there was a last minute cancellation they were able to fit me in for a comprehensive eye exam in less than 24 hours.
Although the interior of the office is a little dated/​cluttered, the staff (Sasha in particular) and Dr. Garr were fantastic. There was minimal waiting time once I arrived and everyone was very professional and welcoming. Dr. Garr was very warm and took the time to talk to me about my eyes and make sure everything was explained clearly. She also multiple times solicited questions to ensure everything was answered.
It feels a little weird to rave so highly about an Optometrist, but honestly I cannot recommend Vision Source and Dr. Garr enough. I will absolutely be passing along any friends who are in need to their office.

Dr. Garr is the best eye doctor I have ever seen. She is friendly, professional, and explains what is going on with your eyes in a very easy to understand manner. I have seen Optometrists in CA, NYC, and now DC and would definitely say she makes the experience bearable.

Dr. Garr is fantastic. She’s friendly and efficient and I’ve gotten in to see her quickly when I’ve had problems. The staff is courteous and efficient as well and I’ve never spent more than a few minutes in the waiting room. I would highly recommend Dr. Garr to anyone!

I have been coming to Dr. Shustock for 23 years. I told her that she is one the best decisions that i have made in my lifetime… lol Also, her staff is friggin AWESOME !!!

Nicest, most professional doctors, technicians and staff. Really take a personal interest in every patient. Highly recommend.

I’ve never been treated so badly by any health care service. I had the following conversation with Dr. Shustock:
me: I’m very comfortable with my contacts, I’ve been wearing them for 5 years
Dr: But there’s new and better technology, let’s try something new.
me: But I’ve tried many, many kinds of contacts, I feel lucky to have found these that work.
Dr: But there are new things in 5 years. Let’s try something new.
me: But I tried something new last year, and ended up going back to my old contacts.
Dr: But there are better technology in the last five years. We’re going to try something new.
I don’t remember how I got out of that loop. In the end I almost got the contacts I wanted: Shustock failed to adjust for my prescription for astigmatism. I called them back and they fixed that, but no apologies.

I feel strange being really enthusiastic about an optometrist, but I’ve seen Dr. Garr for 2 years and I can’t recommend her highly enough.
She’s super knowledgeable, very thorough, and radiates competence while managing to have a great sense of humor. She’s also one of the few medical professionals I’ve interacted with who understands the desire to save money while getting quality care and is great about giving detailed cost breakdowns when discussing different options.
Her office is also very efficient and on top of its administrative stuff — minimal wait times, good about getting back to you, ships contacts promptly, etc.

I love this office. Everyone’s friendly; efficient service and Dr. Garr is great.

Vision Source DC Focus Eyecare is the best in town! I have been a patient for almost 15 years and will continue to be a patient for as long as I can. The location is close to Metro and just a short walk from my downtown office. I don’t wear contacts, so I am always on the lookout for a nice pair of glasses. Focus Eyecare has a wonderful selection of frames! Always something new and different. I highly recommend them!

Focus eye care has it all: friendly staff, great doctors, and great selection of glasses! Dr Shustock did a very thorough exam and tested things that I never been tested on before to check for issues (depth perception for example). She took the time to get my vision perfect! This practice is top-​notch and I highly recommend for all your eye care needs!

I only review when I’ve been blown away by a place or disappointed by a place.
Sadly, in this case I’m disappointed. Thanks to the reviews, I had high hopes that I would have been treated well at this place. Well… I didn’t walk away with the warm and fuzzies. The Exam was pretty great, Dr. Schuster did a great job. The glasses selection was fine and they never pressured me into buying anything, which I loved. In fact, I really liked their optical department because they were really patient. My biggest objection though was that they didn’t really do a great job helping me understand my benefits.
Not everyone is well versed in the art of vision insurance. It turns out, because I have astigmatism and finally decided to try contacts with astigmatism, I now qualify for a «premium contact lens fitting.» I found this out not at the beginning or the middle of my appointment, but at the end. Full disclosure, now that I’m aware that this is a thing, I’m OK paying for it, but I really wish I had known so at the very least I could make an informed decision. Rather than apologizing for the surprise, the staff tried to pin this on me. I wasn’t the only person this happened to that day too. Someone foreign in front of me didn’t understand the conditions that didn’t let us buy contacts online and rather than explain it slowly, they were fairly impatient with him.
This is a pretty standard optical experience. I was looking for something a little more personal. I doubt I’ll come back, but if you don’t really care about that stuff, they do a pretty great exam here.
