All the foods are delicious. We don’t need to wait a long time to get our order. Good service.

My friends said I must stop at Hongkong plaza when I am in LA, they have food court with lots of Indonesian food to choose from. I ordered Nasi bungkus, it’s soooo good. For $ 8 it comes with rice, chicken thigh, beef rendang(Indonesian beef curry), balado(spicy) egg and tofu, veggie curry and Indonesian green salsa. Lots of food, all taste authentic. Next time I am in LA, definitely will stop there again.

So stoked to see an Indonesian/Malaysian food court! I’ve seen these all over the place when traveling the Pacific, but not in the US… until I came across Hongkong plaza! There are a handful of places here, and I wanted to try a couple of them but this one looked so good that I came here twice! The first time, I ordered the seafood laska(7.99). It was a coconut-based red curry soup with prawns, fish cake, and tofu. The broth was flavorful and not too heavy, with a tinge of herbs. Perfect for a light dinner. The second time I got the nasi bungkus(8.50), which was the highlight. I picked it up to go and when it was ready, she gave me a somewhat weighty bag with a package that was wrapped in some sort of wax paper. I was wondering why it wasn’t in a box or take-out container like they usually are, but when I got back to the hotel I found out why… I opened up the paper and saw that my dinner was packed tightly in a banana leaf! After unwrapping the banana leaf my eyes could not believe the goodies inside. There was a chicken leg, a couple big pieces of curried beef, an egg with a light breading, and a couple pieces of spicy veggies. The bulk of it was of course rice(with a very aromatic seasoning), but the meat portion was still pretty generous. If anything I would have preferred more veggies. Too bad I don’t live nearby, otherwise I’d come back and try everything else on the menu(or maybe just get more nasi bungkus!) The lady who works here is very friendly and helpful about explaining the ingredients and spice level of the dishes.

I finally had me some Indo/malaysia food and I disappointed in myself that it took me so long to find it. After all these freaken years of missing out on this, I’m gunna make up on lost time with a vengeance. I tried the Nasi Bungkus like two days ago. I Fell in love with this dish the moment the flavors slowly dissolved into my tastebuds. The flavors hit me like a shot of adrenaline 0__o This place is like a diamond in the rough. Its in a super low pro spot and if your not a local… your definately gonna miss it. Mos def I’m gonna be bacc, matter of fact… I’m going this late afternoon.

Best bami goreng ever! This is the place to be if you’re looking for indonesian food. They add just enough spices, meat and veggies to make my palate explode with enjoyment. I usually ask for medium spicy. Try it… you won’t be disappointed!

I love coming here for Malaysian food. It’s located in a plaza with a bunch of food stands, all specializing in Indonesian and Malaysian cuisine. Even though there are a lot of options for that, I find myself coming to this food stand more. I hadn’t been here in awhile and I guess they took off Roti Canai from their menu :(this us actually what I came for recently! There are no other stands here that offer the Roti dish… Maybe Borneo Kalimantan but they were closed on Monday when I came. I got the chicken and shrimp kwey teow instead and it was delicious! Large shrimp and plenty of chicken, with a true wok flavor that can only be from cooking it on properly high heat. Even though there’s no more roti, I will continue coming here for the kwey teow :) I think next time I will try to laksa. It’s one oft favorite Malaysian dishes and I have no doubt it will be delicious here!

I always get the ayam penyet($ 6.99) here. Very crispy and moist whenever I order one. I don’t know what kind of sambal they make here but it’s pretty tasty; I’m pretty sure it has chopped pieces of eggplant in it. $ 15 min to use card and the lady who helped me was nice.

Indonesian food made to order. I am a creature of habit, so I ordered the Malayasian dish Char Kweo Twoy, not sure how to spell it. But to me, it’ the ultimate comfort thick rice noodle dish. They also have lots of snacks to go, and also make those multi-colored Indonesian drinks with kaleidoscope colors. The lady at the counter was very sweet. Heard about this place through an LA Weekly article

Have some glasses of water and some napkins ready because if you order the Ayam Penyat, you are going to be needing them. The flavor on this dish is like a POW to your taste buds. I got my dish to go and it came with a small side of steamed veges, a bed of rice and the fried chicken. I asked for the sauce on the side. Luckily I did too because I always thought of myself of someone that could take a lot of spice but I was sweating after two bites. The chicken seemed like it was double fried because the chicken was a bit dry. Might be how it is supposed to be. As I said, the kicker in this dish is the sauce. It was chunky with slices of chile in it. Without the sauce, this dish is nothing out of the ordinary but with the sauce, its everything you would want in a lunch. For around $ 8, you get a hefty meal that you will end up being satisfied with. The service is great. The cashier was a lady that seemed to be the owner. Surrounded by other shops in the food court, it still see a majority coming to this shop. The parking can be a hassle since it is a large plaza but once you find parking, finding the place is easy and you are in and out within 5 – 10 minutes.

Wow must try the Malay char keow taw($ 7.50)delicious stir fried mix of shrimp, bean sprouts, flat noodles. The owner said it’s their best dish & suggested it. Btw they are both very nice, great service! They have a tv screen showing all the dishes if you need some help with the menu. Also the Nasi Bungkus($ 7.99)generous portion, very good & very spicy! The Ayam penyat($ 7.50)we had also togo, sauce is very spicy but they pack it on the side. Located in a small food court, where they sell also Filipino food, chinese & other Indo places to try.

Food: We ordered the nasi bunkis and some dried beef dish. Let me tell you, the chili’s are super spicey! Other than that, the Indo food we tried was decent. The portions were about average, so you won’t feel over-stuffed. Food rating: 3.5÷5 Price: Expect to pay under $ 10 for the meal. Overall: Inside the market, there’s probably 4 – 5 Indo places. I’m not sure what seperates one from the another but I would like to try them out. Side note: We were on a mission to eat Saladish but we got side tracked with the food court cause it smelled soooooo good. :P

Bethania Depot is located in the Hong Kong Plaza Food Court. It’s a bit tricky to find, but it is located to the left of the grocery store. After going to Singapore, it’s been hard to find Malaysian food that compares until I found Bethania Depot. The server was friendly and very helpful. She recommended many dishes and even showed us photos on a TV. Ayam Penyet($ 6.99) — Deep fried chicken with rice and chili This dish was good, but very spicy! I love spicy so this was perfect for me, but my friend was dying. Ayam Betutu($ 6.99) — Balinese chicken with rice This was probably my favorite dish. Chicken, rice, egg, and tofu come wrapped in a leaf. The chicken is very tender and goes perfectly with the rice. Not too spicy! Kari Laksa($ 6.50) — Egg noodle served in spicy lemon grass, coconut curry with shrimp, tofu, and fish balls This dish reminds me of my favorite Burmese dish, ohn no khao swè, so of course I had to get it. Ohn no khao swè will always be my favorite, but this was a nice runner up. A great noodle dish! My friend also really liked it. Overall: Conveniently located. Very authentic & affordable. Great service. I will be back to try the Char Kway Teow!

Held inside a supermarket food court. Took me a while to find it. No signs out front or in parking lot. Blows my mind how good this place can be. Was craving indo /Malay food one day and my usual spot(merry house of chicken) was not open early enough. Went looking for this place instead. Very few reviews. Overall, high rating. Ordered their special. The person working the counter was very courteous and nice. NASIBUNGUS. and while waiting, walked next door and got Filipino empanadas; and groceries in the HK market next door. Hits the spot. Will have to come back to try other dishes.

I came here on Sunday around 6. The owner was very nice to us and even has a TV monitor with pictures of all the dishes if you’re curious. My mom and I ordered the Ayam Penyet($ 6.99) and the Kari Laksa($ 6.50). It took maybe 5 – 10 minutes for the food to come out. This cuisine is spicy, so you need to pour 2 cups of water at least. FOOD: Ayam Penyet– Deep fried chicken with white rice, chili-based sauce, and raw cabbage, cucumber, and tomato. They don’t coat it in a batter, so the skin is deep fried. I tried eating it without the skin. The chicken meat is easy to tear apart, but sort of dry. It tastes better when you eat it together with the sauce, but then you need the rice to balance out the strong flavor. The sauce is super spicy, and I can’t even tell what vegetable they put in the sauce. It just tasted GOOD. Kari Laksa– Egg noodle served in spicy lemongrass coconut curry with shrimp, tofu, and shrimp ball. The broth was so good and so spicy. I liked how it wasn’t too creamy and thick. It went so well with the noodles and toppings. The shrimp was alright, didn’t taste too fresh to me. Everything was super spicy and delicious, so I love it! I’d love to try their other menu items next time. :)

I would rate this 4star for the food! The ayam penyet chilli base sauce is really good and the chicken is freaking tender! I would totally recommend to anyone who loves spicy indonesian food! This is a must try! However, this is cash only! A minimum of 15 or dollars for credit card. The owner insisted us to buy more!!! Because she does not accept credit card. Very forceful indeed. Probably a better attitude and service next time :)

Ayam Betutu As you can see in the picture, the chicken, rice, beef and tofu is all wrapped up in a banana leaf. For $ 6.99, I cannot complain, the rice is much different than in many cultures I have tasted, modest and pleasant, never over the top. The restaurant is actually an eatery inside of a plaza on Glendora near Merced, the same plaza shared by a variety of Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican and Penny’s Family Restaurant. Parking is usually ok but I have never been here on weekends or during 5−6PM weekdays. Plenty of seating at the food court to enjoy your meal. I will be back to try more items, as I am still not fully entrenched in this food.
