While staying in Rockwood we wanted to find a hike that our 13 year old large breed dog with weakened hind legs could join us on. Our hosts at Gray Ghost Camps had a binder with useful information on the surrounding area and part of it was notes on hikes. The 1 mile easy walk to Moxie Falls, Maine’s highest waterfall, caught our eye. Our drive was just about an hour. We passed Attean Rest Area and The Forks Rest Area as well as many Moose Safari and rafting spots as well as passing through Jackman, Maine. Let’s best honest, there isn’t much along this drive in the Western part of Maine so get gas and be prepared by using the potty before you set out. We came across the parking lot(not thanks to google maps which was telling us we still had 45 min more to go). There are zero facilities here. The last spot is The Forks Rest Area. Hose yourself down with bug spray.(hopefully you have pet friendly spray for your dog too so spray them down). The path is flat, wide and level. You will twist and wind with swampy rain forest area around you as you head to the falls. You’ll then have a slight decent as to begin to hear the water. The closer you get there will be more roots, steps and walkways as you continue a slight downhill approach. The roar of the water lets you know you are almost there. The first platform overlooks the top of the falls which is a gradual multi-step fall. It’s lovely. Continue down the stairs and platforms and then there it is! The 90 foot drop. It’s so beautiful! There are multiple platforms to get different views of the falls and river. There is a swimming hole here as well, it’s best to check with the locals on the best spot. The trail continues on but we stopped just over a mile in as the trail was much more rustic and tougher on our dog. If you are in the area, do not pass this by!
