I came here one afternoon after reading the raving reviews. The inside of this place is small but I thought it was decorated nicely. There are a couple of booths but mostly tables and chairs were part of the décor. I decided to order the 7 piece steamed shrimp dinner with mac and cheese as my side. The steamed shrimp were seasoned with what seamed like Old Bay seasoning. They were a good size but nothing that wow’d me. The mac and cheese was also nothing that was remarkable; I felt it lacked flavor. I’ve had better mac and cheese but I will say it was a good sized portion. Overall, the meal was ok but the customer service is good, which gave them an extra star.

A wonderful experience. I was looking for some reasonably priced, fish-fry-like, seafood. I saw noticed this place, which had great online reviews and is surrounded by parks. bear mountain, bowline point park and stony point state park. Anything with parks + nearby water is great since I love taking photos. I decided to drive up there from the Bronx, 50 minutes or so. I was not disappointed. Small town feel as it is part of a small strip mall. A few other shops and a Carvel and a Mavis Tire Shop on either side. Walked in and it was a comfortable. Not crowded at all for a nice Sunday afternoon. Staff was friendly and helpful. A few 4 seater tables as well as two booths which hold 4 – 6 people each. Prices were great given the usual high price of seafood. We had some shrimp, whiting, chicken wings, and mac and cheese. Everything was great though needed a bit of salt which is understandable. It makes sense for food restaurants to undersalt their food, since the customers can always add more salt, though if the food comes over salted to the customer, theres not much that can be done at that point. No harm done there. They had a small fridge to the right which had the usual can and bottles sodas but they also had home made kool-aid, similar to what you;d find in pizzerias. The Kool-Aid comes in one size, which is about the size of a quart, massive. The other side has lots of napkins, and condiments such as ketchup and tartar sauce. I did use the bathroom, which was a bit crammed, but more than adequate. It was clean, which I think is what matter. Plus I wasn’t expecting anything fancy given then type of place. I asked about certain things like blue crabs, and was told they go for about $ 2 each but vary on when they comes in. So call ahead if you are going for that. An overall good experience. Minor issue is that the«shrimp» are all the same. There is shrimp and fish combo which was ordered as well as the«tiger shrimp», which in my experience are larger shrimp, but they were all the same. Not small in any way, but my experience were that tiger shrimp were quite large and I expected them to be bigger than the regular shrimp listed on the menu. I recommend this place to everyone. Definitely worth a try.

This is a very nice little place to get some good fried seafood. If you are looking for ambience this would not be it, its a small restaurant in a strip center however the food is really good. The whiting and shrimp were fried very well, the fries were crispy, the lemonade sweet. I would definitely go back again. If you want a cheap evening or date, do this for dinner, get you some Carvel ice cream next door for dessert and then go sit by the water for free 5 minutes away at Emeline Park.

Went today for lunch, first time there. One word, AMAZING! Best fish and chips I ever had. Perfectly cooked fish. The fries were without a doubt the best I ever had. I’m coming back to try the rest of the menu.

this place is amazing. the outside doesnt look fancy at all, and the inside either, sorta looks like they dont get much business, BUT they do! the food is soooooo good. i got a Po boy sandwich with a side of candied yams(best i ever had) and potato salad(i saved half for the next day and was happy i did) dont judge this place by the outside. and please order the yams! the potato salad has tiny pieces of chopped pickles in it, which made it even yummier, it ws creamy and just… mouthwatering! this spot is OFFTHEHOOK!

This place SAVEDMYWEDDING!!! I found out that my caterer was going to be closed during the time of my wedding THREEWEEKSBEFORETHEWEDDING! We wanted to have Soul Food for our wedding dinner and we spent the next two weeks looking high and low, trying food from all over the city and beyond and we found nothing. Places wouldn’t call us back and that was even after they heard it was for our wedding a week and a half away! Finally, one week to the day before our wedding, it was suggested that we try Off The Hook in Haverstraw. We went and tried the food. ALLEXCELLENT! They worked with our budget to get us all the foods we wanted for the price we had budgeted! They were caring and kind and if you’ve ever been a bride you know how desperate you are for that a week before your wedding especially when you have no food for the reception yet! Tony, one of the owners, gave me his personal email and cell phone and constantly contacted me to reassure me that things were fine. That is all wonderful, but the icing on the cake is, THEFOODWASFANTASTIC!!! It was all anyone could talk about! I had family in from out of town and it was all they could talk about as well. One of my bridesmaids looked at me half way through dinner and said, «Is it possible this food gets better tasting the more you eat it!!!» Truly, this is a place that was a life saver for me in the most stressful time in my life as well as THEBESTSOULFOODINROCKLANDCOUNTY!!! HIGHLYHIGHLYRECOMMENDIT!!!

Went here yesterday for the first time and I absolutely loved it. I had fried whiting with a side of candied yams, my bf had fried catfish with candied yams and cole slaw and my son had fried shrimp and fries. Everything was fresh and the price is right. The young man who took the orders was a pleasure to deal with and very welcoming. We will definitely be back!

Off the hook is off the chain. This place is at the top of our let’s eat out list. Parking is tight but the food is well worth the challenge. We has catfish, shrimp, Mac and cheese, yams and potato salad.

been here 4 times and the food has gotten worse each time. Shrimp were rubber and not fresh, whiting dried out and burnt. Macaroni and cheese taste like plaster, potato salad was sour. Never have clams when i asked for them. Workers are rude and wont give you what u ask for. This place has sunk.

The food here is great and price is extremely fair. The whiting here was one of the best I have ever had. Parking not always there but i would park a mile down the street for the food here. Atmosphere is friendly and the people are very nice. If you like fish and chips this is the best in the county, hands down, now that I think about it… it might be the best anywhere!

My family and I were driving through Haverstraw on a Sunday aftrernoon when we all wanted to stop to grab a bite to eat on the road. Children wanted pizza so we pulled into this small shopping plaza. Two doors down from the pizza shop a sign caught my eye — Off The Hook — fish & chips. I thought — I’ll pick up pizza for the kids but I want fish & chips. Sure enough it was the best decision we made. My husband and I loved it. We purchased the traditional fish & chips with sides of mac & cheese, collard greens, homemade coleslaw & potato salad. All was great and we had left overs, too. I thought it was excellent and can’t say enough of how delicious and fresh everything was.

You might not know it but Off The Hook has been around in West Haverstraw for over 4 years. Newly relocated to Route 9W, this is a Harlem-style fish and chips place. Forget everything that you know about traditional fish and chips. Here you will get freshly line-caught red snapper, porgy, and whiting alongside Southern-style classics like fried oysters, clams and tiger shrimp. Breading does not overwhelm the fish. Seems like a light cormeal-dusted batter that gives everything a nice crunch without any grease. Fish is very tender and sides are homemade and also excellent. Some standout side dishses include the perfectly seasoned and traditionally prepared collared greens and fresh cut sweet potato fries. Save room for old-fashioned lemon poundcake, baked in-house by the owner’s mom. AMBIANCE: I wouldn’t throw my birthday party here. But it’s clean and spacious enough to sit down and enjoy some serious fried fish. Take out is a good idea. Two Stars. FOOD: Super. See above. Four stars. COST: You can get 6 pieces of whiting or tilapia AND10 large tiger shrimp for $ 20. It’s a ton of food. Porgy and red snapper are market priced. 10 shrimp and chips for $ 12.25. Original Fish and Chips — 2 fillets of whiting or tilapia with chips for just $ 4.25. Pretty good value right here and very reasonable price points. Four stars. SERVICE: Very friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. The owners are also fisherman and sometimes take your order personally. Four stars. IFYOUGO: For the health-conscious or if you don’t like anything fried, you can get anything on the menu steamed. Hours are irregular — Monday and Tuesday they’re closed. Wednesday 2p — 9p; Thursday 11:30a — 10:00p; Friday/Sat 12:00p — 11:00p; Sunday 1p — 7p.
