I only went for a free consultation. After spending a little more than an hour with John, some of his tactics became obvious.(I’m an advanced singer with years of making my living as a singer. I was seeking a vocal coach to stay in shape, not to learn how to use my voice, because I already have a handle on that and have done quite well for myself as a singer.) John Davies was rude, and self aggrandizing at best and insulting and downright wrong at worst. I would never study with this man and would suggest to any singer who is serious about their craft to find a better teacher. There’s nothing worse than learning bad habits and studying with a teacher who’s more into himself and his own accomplishments. It is not a good way to spend your time and money and can actually do more harm than good to you as a singer. Be sure to check his credentials and awards as listed on his website. Some of the awards he has won are not legitimate. Don’t take my word for it — look at his site and do the research for yourself. Singing is a joy that everyone has the capacity to enjoy — a teacher should help you grow not create problems for you. John is the type of teacher that will create problems to fix so that you’ll feel a sense of gratitude toward him. Do not study with someone like this. There are some amazing folks out there that can really help you to find your voice and love what you’re doing. So take the time to find that teacher and don’t settle for less. Keep on singing everybody!

When it comes to the technical aspects of singing, John Davies is pretty much an expert. Being an opera singer, he is very knowledgable about the voice and has helped me tremendously with technique. Even though he is an opera singer, his technique can be applied to all styles of music. After a couple months with him, my range increased so much I couldn’t believe it. However, while he has helped me so much with the technical aspects, I feel that the lessons were lacking in other areas. Basically, everything other than the technique. I don’t think that he is very good at helping students with how they actually sing songs. Every time I would sing a song for him, he would barely give any comments or critiques, maybe because he didn’t know what to say. So he’s not very helpful when you are trying to prepare for an audition. I’m sure for opera singers he would be great, but for other genres I feel like he doesn’t really have a grasp on how to help them. Also, I felt like a huge part of each one hour lesson was spent wasting time. During every lesson, he would spend a good amount of time telling at least one random story that had little to nothing to do with what we were doing. It was as if he was just using up time because he didn’t know what else to do with it. Some weeks I would come out of my lesson feeling as if I hadn’t really benefited from the lesson at all. And when he did say something useful, he would take forever to explain things. He would take 10 minutes explaining something that could be explained in maybe 2 minutes. Basically, I feel like the amount of information he gave me did not equal the amount of time I spent with him. Now don’t get me wrong, he gave a lot of helpful information, but it would trickle out very slowly. Overall, I’m very glad that I have had lessons with John Davies because my technique has really improved. However, that’s the only thing it was good for: the technique. After a while I felt as if I wasn’t learning anything new and the lessons weren’t really worth it anymore. –UPDATE– Response to John Davies’s Reply: Hahah, obviously I lived in Los Angeles when I was taking lessons from him. Also, I advise you not to read the hidden reviews. They are hidden for a reason, because most of them are obviously fake. Notice how most of them were posted within a very short time span, and then they suddenly stop.

John Davies is an amazing vocal coach! At first I was hesitant to train with an opera singer because I am a pop/RnB singer, but when I met with him for the first time I already left my first session feeling better already. He has different tips and techniques that I haven’t heard from anyone before and they definitely work and make a difference. He truly cares for his students’ success and wants to help them build and grow to their full potential. I would highly recommend John. I found my vocal coach! :)
