One of — okay THE — nicest playground I’ve been to so far. It is always clean. There are plenty of benches for weary caregivers to rest while the kids run around and burn off that endless supply of energy. There are two play structures, both with slides and an array of climbing structures separated by a fence. One side for tots and one for older kids. There’s a substantial set of swings(6 total — one for all ages). The playground is adjacent to a set of large baseball fields, tennis and basketball courts. There is no parking lot but I’ve never had trouble finding an on street space on beautiful LaGrange street. Its proximity to the plenty of shops and restaurants along Centre Street lend to making the visit to the playground a multi-purpose outing. I know how much effort it took to get the kids loaded up and out the door — so let’s make the most of it! While it can get busy, it’s never been so overwhelmingly crowded that my introverted personality couldn’t handle it. I’ve always been very comfortable with the amount of kids and guardians. This is our favorite playground in the city so far, it has become our regular spot.

They just reopened with a new playground. Great area for kids under 4. They have rocking horses and a water table type thing. My son loves it.

I grew up about a quarter mile from here and, to this day, I still measure parks and playgrounds by what’s at Billings Field. Operated by the City of Boston, Billings offers something for people of all ages. Starting with the little ones, there’s a great playground with swings and climbing equipment, and enough space for hundreds of kids to run around without getting hurt. The parkway area has lots of youth sports leagues that play here and just about every kid in the vicinity has played football, baseball, soccer or softball in its confines at some point. Softball leagues make use of its diamonds during the summer and share them with a baseball field over near the basketball and tennis courts. During the fall youth football also plays here. There’s also a paved path leading from Lagrange Street over to Bellevue Street that is perfect for walkers and anyone with dogs. It’s not great for runners(even though the annual Corrib Pub race starts and ends here) but the steps nearest Bellevue Street are challenging. Do not expect food vendors or bathroom facilities, although there are nearby restaurants that are good for a quick stop before or after a visit. Definately one of my favorite parks anywhere and always worth a visit when in West Roxbury!
