Open Doors

This studio is quite nice considering its located in kind of a dumpy building. The parking isn’t too good in that area but the actual yoga class itself was done well. I’m not a huge yoga fan and only did one class but the instructor was extremely nice, gave me plenty of attention, and went at a pace a beginner could keep up with. The class had an atmosphere that I believe most yoga fans would appreciate. They have a cheap beginner price also, which is a plus.

Most teachers I have encountered here are very kind, give off very good vibes, and are great at articulating the moves and breathing. You can’t beat the $ 5 community classes also. I started here with a groupon and never felt the need to shop around and seek out a different studios to find the right one for me, as was my original plan.
Also, something about the high ceilings, the colors and décor here, though it’s simple it gives me the feeling I’m in a different country. Love it.

I am a newbie to yoga, and I am completely hooked after starting at open doors. I love this studio space, it’s high ceilings, hardwood floors, windows, it’s just gorgeous. I have been exclusively taking beginner classes and feel no great rush to move up except for more heat. I do find a wide variance in temperatures depending on instructor, time of day, and outside temperature, but that is minor. Variation in approach and focus too with instructors, but that is, from what I understand, typical of power yoga.
Overall the instructors are warm and supportive, and the experience always leaves me feeling far better than when I arrived. My suggestion for a true newbie is to take a intro class with Chris, she’s very good about making folks feel welcome and providing modifications to different postures for folks who are new.
Reasonable introductory rates and appreciated student discounts!!!

The class itself was fine — crowded, which is not my preference for yoga practicing but I know some people prefer that. The Power Yoga is exactly how people describe below, it is challenging and you do sweat a lot, so its definitely a good workout. Pricing was fair.
My issues are the following:
1. Studio — it needs to be badly updated. I was really shocked walking in. Hot yoga to begin with is disgusting, you don’t also want an old studio with the floor peeling from the heat as well. For so many studios as part of the Open Doors brand on the South Shore, you’d think they would put more money into their studios. Also, not a fan of leaving my belongings outside of the unlocked studio main entrance with the only staff person being the instructor who was in the class with doors closed. Lastly, the studio hallway should actually have the heat on… it is not okay leaving a hot yoga class into a freezing cold hallway. Very shocking for the muscles.
2. Class instruction — too passive. If you read my other Unilocal reviews, I am someone who really believes that to ensure an injury-​less workout experience, instructors need to pay more attention to students in a class. We were given the positions but there was not a whole lot of correction.

This is where I learned how to do yoga. I have tried many other places but I never seem to get the full experience that I do at Open Doors. The beginner classes are excellent and it is where I bring friends to learn the ropes. If people give you a hard time for being a guy and doing yoga, then bring them here to see how hard of a workout it is.
I have been to three other Open Doors locations and they are consistently excellent. This location isn’t fancy and smells like sweat because hey… it’s hot yoga and you sweat like a fat man running a marathon. I love the feeling of doing a hot yoga class then going outside in the nice crisp fall… it feels like going from a hot tub into a pool. It’s the closest thing to getting a workoutgasm that I can imagine… like a runner’s high on steroids for me.
The only problems with Open Doors is that they are all on the south shore so it is prohibitive for me to attend regularly. It is also not cheap. In order to get the most benefit from yoga, you should do it at least a few times per week. At $ 15 per class at a drop in rate that comes out to $ 45 per week and $ 140 per month. That leaves me to do the crappy yoga classes at my gym because it is included in my $ 30 per month fee. Ideally I want to go down to Open Doors at least once per month to ensure that I can get quality corrections and ensure that I stay true to the practice.
That said, I miss this yoga studio and recently went a few weeks back. It reminded me just how much I could enjoy yoga again. The part that doing yoga at my gym lacks is the spiritual connection for me. The heat in the room helps, but there is something about doing classes at Open Doors that brings in people who can really connect me to my spirituality.

I have been going to yoga here for a while now. Fridays seem to be my favorite day. Either I get in to the 4pm class with Karen, or the 530 with Richard. The teachers here are great and the workout, and the way you feel after class is unbelievable. Such a stress reliever. I find myself getting more flexible and more relaxed in certain positions as I continue on in my practice here at Open Doors Weymouth. I’ve taken class with several different instrctors and I cannot complain about any of them. Jojo, Karen, Matt and Richard are instructors I like to practice with often. Power yoga at Open Doors has seriously helped me make some changes in my body, that I am very grateful for. Not just the physical part, but mentally… I feel more in tune with myself and knowing what my body needs thanks to these classes. They even offer a 3 class pass for $ 20 for beginners! Such a great deal for anyone insterested in trying it out. If you haven’t gotten to Open Doors Weymouth yet, GET there. I think I’m due for a class myself. The holiday season is fast approaching and I need to treat my mind and body.

I’ve been practicing at Open Doors for a few years now and absolutely LOVE the Weymouth Studio. I’m not sure if it’s the large windows or the beautiful wall color but the energy there is fantastic. The building is a little bit older but I think that adds to its character, as maintaining classroom heat is never an issue. The teachers here are phenomenal and offer many different leveled classes throughout the week. They’re encouraging and supportive, and allow each individual to complete their practice at their own speed and ability. While it’s located off of 53, parking is never an issue. This is by far my favorite yoga studio in the area! This is a MUST go to!

I have been doing yoga at Open Doors in Weymouth and Hingham for the past 8 years off and on. They truly are the best. They offer assistance to you in all classes and encourage you to do your best, and not worry about how everyone else is doing. This is the best part because I am far from perfection and I still feel comfortable going there. They have an awesome staff that really knows there stuff! Love this place and is the only place I go for yoga.

I have practiced at the Boston Power Yoga Institute (Baptiste) off and on for about 5 years. As a yogi you tend to get comfortable with and stick to one studio. I tried Open Doors reluctantly with a friend whom I was encouraging to get back into yoga after a tough break-​up. I’m happy to say that the ladies at Open Doors are fantastic! Joanne in particular is an inspiration and a great instructor. I live in Boston so it’s not exactly convenient for me to travel to Weymouth for yoga but I’ve been doing so twice a week!

I’ve been doing Power Yoga at Open Doors off-​and-​on for years. I’ve been to other studios, but I always come back to Open Doors. The teachers are great, responsive, friendly and 9 times out of 10 do a great job in quickly figuring out the average ability level in the class and catering to it. There are so many convenient classes to choose from, and whether you’re a beginner or a professional there’s something for you here. I may be biased because I basically learned to do yoga at Open Doors, but I think the instruction here is always very clear and done in a safe and supportive way.
I could go on for days, but I won’t! I agree with all the good things everyone else said. The only bad thing is that classes are really crowded sometimes, especially evening/​after work classes… sign up online!

I am one fussy person when it comes to yoga… if I am going to spend the 90 minutes in a room not talking and/​or looking at my phone, I want results.
That being said… I love Susan’s Monday 5:30 class! It sets the tone for my entire week :) It is the most wonderful combination of physical and mental exercise.
What I really like about this place is the appropriate use of heat and steam. I like it hotttttt but I also want to feel that it’s helping in my practice, not making me nauseous. I sweat out whatever overindulgence my body is holding in from the weekend but feel strong enough to push myself in practice.
Her class, like all well instructed yoga classes, are structured around building towards something (a specific position, for example). She offers feedback on why we are in certain poses as well has tips to help deepen the posture or to prevent injury. I have been in her class for over 2 years now and feel I walk away every week with a great workout.
She also plays fun music which can be an extra way to zone out of the world and into your practice.
The workshops are also a great way to spend an afternoon!

Best HOT Power Yoga Studio in the South Shore — hands down!!!: Weymouth, Hingham, Hanover, Duxbury (there are a few more but these are the studios I attend; plus, Westwood and Roslindale). Top notch and passionate instructors, staff and owner. Newbies or Pros are all welcome. $ 5 Community Class is, for me, a way of giving back to their communities. Passes or membership applies to ALL 13 studios — can’t beat that!

After class one; I was hooked.

I am a relatively newbie to the yoga world — started doing yoga this past June, and first tried «hot yoga» in September. So, that said, I don’t have an awful lot to compare Open Doors to. However, I have thoroughly enjoyed the handful of classes I’ve taken here. In the Weymouth studio, I’ve attended a couple of Matt’s Friday noontime power yoga classes. LOVE him, love his energy and vibe! The class is relaxing but challenging, and he is constantly staying positive, encouraging statements to the class in general. It just feels like a happy, comfortable place when he is teaching!
I’ve also attended Insa and Lynn’s classes in the Duxbury studio. Definiely a different vibe in the Duxbury space, but I’ve also enjoyed those sessions. Insa’s, in particular, are very challenging, but she was good about pointing out modifications for the more advanced moves, like inversions.

For my first Unilocal review, I knew it had to be special and Open Doors Yoga Studio in Weymouth MA is one of my most favorite places on this earth! I left Boston for supposedly greener pastures mid 2008 and just the thought of this studio makes me want to move back! I’ve been to plenty of studios in SF where I lived and now in LA and nothing compares to Open Doors.
Susan Frazier is the best instructor I’ve ever had and I absolutely miss her! Richard, the owner, is also amazing. You cannot leave one of their classes without feeling on top of the world.
The reasons this studio stands out from the crowd:
— It is HARD. Power yoga is not your boring «I almost fell asleep» type of yoga (yeah I’m looking at you Hatha) Don’t come here simply because you are looking forward to the nap at the end, come for an intense workout. You will feel amazing afterward.
— That said, even though it can be difficult, the instructors are so encouraging. If you are tired or need a rest, they encourage you to go into child’s pose which is a wonderfully restful position. You don’t feel like the only loser in class in this pose. I’ve been to bikhram studios where the instructor practically yells at you for stopping in the middle of the practice for a break because it ruins «their» class flow.
— You begin at a pose but the instructors will give you further instruction if you want to deepen your pose. I really appreciate this because some studios just stop at the basic pose and don’t offer you instruction or guidance if you want to try out a deeper pose. Yes they do head stands here but if you can’t do it, keep trying, that’s why it’s called yoga «practice». A lot of other studios I’ve been to don’t even give you the opportunity to try harder positions like headstands and crow/​side crow.
— It’s a great price. $ 100 for 10 classes? That is an insanely good price, it’s like the stuff of urban myth!
— It’s not bourgeoise. Everyone is friendly and down to earth. It’s not a bunch of soccer mom/​trophy wives (despite the fact that half the studio is covered in Lululemon).
I now go to the famous Bryan Kest’s power yoga studio in Santa Monica, CA and trust me, I still think Open Doors in Weymouth is the BEST. If you are looking for a great workout, please give this place a try, you really won’t regret it!

Went to the Open Doors Yoga studio in Weymouth today for the 5:30pm class with Matt (the instructor). Upon arrival I had a hard time finding street parking and had to make a few loops around Weymouth Landing but luckily got a spot right in front of the studio as someone was moving. I had a girlfriend meeting me there for her first class as well. She also had a hard time finding parking. So– arrive early to find a spot.
I signed up for the $ 20 new customer special (includes three classes within the first week of being a new member). It is usually $ 14 for a drop in class.
The studio was very clean and hot (obviously whereas this is hot power yoga). Matt taught a very good class and has a good sense of humor. He did a lot of modifying for newbies like me. Ive been to other yoga studios and classes but its been a while since ive done «hot yoga» and its always harder hot!
My friend also really liked the class and we both plan on going back soon. Namaste!

Namaste, PEOPLES! And don’t go to this yoga studio. Because it’s all mine. ALLL MIIIINE. In fact, I’m seriously rethinking the idea of writing a good review for it because I selfishly want to ensure that it doesn’t turn into Baptiste. But, my generous side is getting the better of me, so here goes.
The Weymouth location and the Hanover location have very different vibes, but one thing is for sure about Open Doors. Wherever you go, the classes are consistently wonderful, the energy is great and the experience is just what you’d hoped from a class. Weymouth walls are painted orange and red and the practice comes across as high energy. In contrast, in Hanover, the ambiance is more spiritual with dimmed lights. What’s nice about both is that you can work as hard or as light as you want– the instructors encourage breaks (so you feel like you have permission to take child’s pose) and are there to assist you whenever you need. They play music which I know some don’t like– but it does help to keep you in the moment when that stretch is just one or two seconds too long.
10 Class passes are $ 100 and can be used between Weymouth, Canton and Hanover. There’s ample parking (at least in the Hanover location) and a variety of different times that should fit everyone’s schedule. I must say, that this studio has managed to get me going back to yoga after a long hiatus of blissful laziness. The classes are so good, I look forward to them. And that’s nothing short of a miracle.

Open Doors is a great place to do yoga.
The downstairs hot yoga is pretty hot. If you have done Bikram, it’s nothing like that hell, but the level of hotness is similar to Forrest yoga temperatures. It’s pleasant if you like to sweat, but dress appropriately and bring a towel and plenty of water. It is quite an exhausting workout and you will feel stretched out after.
The upstairs yoga is normal temperature, and it’s generally what I prefer. Claudia’s «light» power yoga class has a deceptive name — it’s actually quite a fun and powerful workout. It’s a great class.
The studio is located in Weymouth Landing and is accessible by Bus #225 (stops right in front of the place) and the new Greenbush line, for those of you without cars.
I highly recommend this place. The teachers are caring, the ambiance is nice and there is no competitive atmosphere there. At $ 12 per class, it’s also a bargain.

I love this yoga studio. I was going here for a few years before I moved away from the South Shore in mid-​2006. I haven’t been there since then, but I miss it often.
The studio is on the second and third floor of the building. The second floor is typically hot yoga classes, vinyasa/​ashtanga inspired. The third floor offers unheated classes on a less frequent, but still regular schedule.
The experience varies from instructor to instructor. You have to find who’s style appeals to you the most. I like Shawn, Richard and Susan a lot. But there are many others to choose from as well.
If you’re interested in the «power yoga» thing, don’t be shy though. Take a beginner’s class, tell the instructor it’s your first time, and rest in child’s pose or lie on your back whenever you need to rest. Don’t push yourself just because you don’t want people looking at you funny! No one cares. They’re focused on their own practice, I promise you.
Also, if you’re new to hot yoga, bring a yoga mat, a bath-​size towel to lie on top of your mat, a couple of hand towels or another large towel to wipe your sweat, and a LARGE bottle of water.
The only reason I don’t give Open Doors Power Yoga five stars is that the parking can be kind of a pain sometimes. There is a small lot in the back that can be used for evening classes, but that fills up quickly. We used to be able to park in the church parking lot across the street, but I don’t think that’s allowed anymore. So you’re pretty much left to street parking. It’s not that difficult to find something, but make sure you get there a few minutes early just in case.
Another good reason to get there early is if you’re keen on getting a certain spot in the class. The back of the room tends to fill up quickly, so if you’re shy about being in the first row, get there 20 minutes early so you can pick a spot in a less consipicuous area.
Overall though, this is a great yoga studio with wonderful instructors and practitioners and a general feel-​good vibe. I hope I can find a place I like as much as this one in San Francisco.
