This is by far one of the best authentic salvadorian food restaurants I have ever been to. The staff is very friendly and its always a pleasure to come and eat eat here. Highly recommend it! So sad it closed down. :(1/12/15

I was at home wonder what to have for dinner and started going through some menus. I found one for El Comedor and started looking at it and decided that I want some pupusas. I thought this menu was for Sol Maya which is right around the corner from my house so i gave them a call and ordered a pupusa de chicharon and a pupusa de chorizo. While on the phone with them the guy asked if I know where there located? I told him sure, your next to the Piara Pizza. He said no, we moved from uptown and are now at the car wash. I was puzzled by now and realized I called the wrong place. At this point I figured I will give them a try, what the hell. Turns of they have moved into the car wash on the corner of Whittier Blvd and Ocean View. They have a full selection of Salvadorean plates here. I was pretty happy with the pupusas. They cost a little over $ 2.25 ea. They gave me a generous serving of the cabbage slaw and sauce. I am not knowledgeable of pupusas so I’m not quite sure how their suppose to be eaten. I kind of placed a little cabbage and sauce on each bite. These pupusas were really filling. 2 was enough for me. I am glad I didn’t purchase a plate. that would have been too much food for me. Its kind of a toss up for me if I go here or Sol Maya. Both are really close to my house, Sol Maya is probably a 5 min walk. This place a 10 min walk.

The food is not so bad, that’s the only good thing I will say. But the customer courtesy blows. This is our first and last time coming here. We come with the family and order a nice big meal, and then my Dad asks from some sour cream and he brings back with a tiny bit of sour cream… when we are done, we leave a tip as courtesy and are walking out the door until he says«That will be another $ 1.50 for the sour cream» Are you serious? you are going to charge us for a tiny bit of sour cream which should be free, and we just got done giving you a ton of money for the meals and the tip and you are going to slap that ridiculous charge in our face? That’s pretty greedy and rude if you ask me. Are you going to charge for the napkins and toothpicks too? Anyways we are not coming there again. Also to point out, the place is very ugly looking and outdated. There is boxes and trash on the side of the walls. They don’t offer debit/credit charge. The atmosphere is dreadful. It looks like they care more about the money and not putting the money back into this place to make it look nice. If they would show more courtesy and appreciation for their customers and not being so greedy, things would be different.

The pupusas are very good here but I would rather not eat here because: They only accept cash, they take forever to give you your food, when I order out they charge extra for cabbage, and the owner isn’t so nice. Other than that, the food is good.

Delicious! Great place for pupusas, the Revuelto is my favorite. Also make sure to try the Pan con Gallina, YUM! Ambience is so-so more of a take out place so don’t expect anything fancy if you dine in. If you get the pupusas you can’t go wrong.

Pretty good pupusas. Their platanos are good as well. The pupusas are greasy and the filling is usually pretty good, sometimes you’ll get one that isn’t filled very well or is overcooked.

The best pupusa in the area! :) The service is good. I know they try harder cause I’m not a latin girl. The very first time I dine here… I ordered so much food that could have lasted me til the next day. I tried the charboiled banana… OMG…DELICIOUS! I’m drooling telling you this! The second time I went back, just ordered the pupusas… okay…1 pupusa is going to be all that I need. They are so good and filling. If you are in the area and you want to try something new… drop in here and you’ll leave happy! :)

Okay I’ve had WAY better than this place! From the service to the food! So when we first got there, it was empty — we were there by ourselves. We pretty much knew what we wanted so we ordered drinks and food right away. I ordered a tamale de elote(corn tamale) with sour cream and beans plus a pupusa revuelta; my boyfriend ordered pollo encebollado(chicken grilled with onions) and pastelitos de carne(sorta like meat hot pockets) and an extra order of tortillas; my friend ordered a plate that had a pupusa revuelta, rice, beans, and chicharron. Okay…so 15 minutes go by and my boyfriend gets his plate(without the extra tortillas and pastelitos) along with my friend’s plate. At this point they have a couple that’s sitting outside and a small family that sat behind us. 3 minutes later I get my tamale but no pupusa… I figured«okay, they’re still cooking it and will bring it out in a few minutes.» Mind you, my friend’s plate came with a pupusa and she got hers on her plate… why would mine take longer? Okay fine. Half way through my boyfriend’s meal, they brought the extra tortillas. At this point, my friend decides that she wants another pupusa revuelta so she orders another one and I have yet to get mine. So I finish my tamale and no pupusa yet. We flagged down a lady that cooks in the back and came out with someone else’s order. We let her know we’re still waiting for the pupusas and pastelitos. She says«oh yes it’s coming!» and goes to the back. Oh! Mind you again, there’s no one in the restaurant… as far as a server or manager or anybody but the eating guests! Ooookay… so finally the pastelitos come out and a(ONE) pupusa comes out and they give it to my friend… uhhhh? So she gives it to me and she waits for hers. 5 more minutes go by and finally someone comes out from the back again so my boyfriend says we’re still waiting for another pupusa and the lady says«Oh yes it’s coming!» So she goes to the back and not even a minute later she comes out with it… the wrong one! It’s a pupusa with steak inside! ARGH! At this point we were tired of waiting so she just ate it. So now let me tell you how the food was. My boyfriend’s chicken had really good flavor and now I wish I would’ve ordered that instead. I’m a huge tamale de elote fan and I will always order it when we go to a Salvadorean place. This tamale had no flavor and was mushy! The pupusas were so empty! I always open them up because I love when the cheese oozes out… this one didn’t ooze :(I didn’t try the pastelitos because they had beef in them and I don’t eat that. I only tried this place because my coworker said it was much better than the other place in Whittier which is also just okay. I don’t think he has much to compare it to so I don’t blame him. My parent’s are Salvadorean so I grew up eating this food as did my boyfriend with his Salvadorean parents. I’ve gone to many Salvadorean restaurants and this one by far was the worst! I gave it two stars for the beans with sour cream and the chicken plate my boyfriend had.

Food: This was my first time trying pupusas and golly o gee were they tasty. They were very fresh and flavorful. I had a carne asada pupusa and a pork pupusa. Both were amazing. Is it a burrito? Is it a taco? No! It’s none of the above. It is a cross between a burrito, a calzone and a basket of love. Delicious! The restaurant: Was small but nicely decorated. There were some nice art pices on the walls, mainly tied in to El Salvador. It was spotless and pleasant to eat in. Service: Was slow but I was told that it is due to how the pupusas are prepared. The server was very friendly and seemed to enjoy serving us their delicious treats. I will definately go back for more pupusas.

I can only vouch for their pupusas… Adjust your personal star rating accordingly. oh, and CASHONLY, but they have an ATM inside. The bf and I have driven by this establishment many a time, and he often mentions this place just because he knows that I love pupusas, yet we have never been to a place together for the purpose of eating these bad boys… The original plan to go to Maggianos for a romantic dinner was thwarted by general end of the weekend exhausation. So he compromised with something local and we ended up here… There was only one or two other groups in the restaurant so the service was attentive and quick. Ordered 4 pupusas(mine were queso/cheese, and his were carne asada and the more traditional Revuelta(chicharron with cheese)). I had a plate with platanos fritos(fried in a pan) and black beans(or darker beans, but not black) with crema. Some of the beans were burnt slightly but not bad, and the bananas were perfect. Oh, Crema, buttery cream that tastes so good. I liked their curtido(pickled spicy cabbage) because it was spicier than the average curtido, but I do like it with a tad more vinegar. Their pupusas were hefty, greasy and cheesy, the way I like it. I have had better, but this place does a great job. All that food with a diet coke was a little over 16 bucks. Can’t beat that with a cat! You can get with this…

I wanted to give it five stars but the fact that they lie about air conditioning no es muy bueno. I always get fliers from this place and have actually seen a commercial, and their big claim to fame, besides pupusas, is their AC. So, one day hubby and I walked in and notice it’s cash only. The ATM wasn’t working so we went elsewhere. The next time, I made sure I brought cash and we each ordered pupusa plates. I had the beans and cheese pupusa and a chicken pupusa. Both were very good. I also enjoyed their beans on the side. The rice was okay. Nothing great. The thing that was driving me nuts is that they had one fan going on, and it was facing the cashier and cooks. The rest of us were left to melt while eating. I’ve talked to a few people that tell me that they advertise air but they never put it on. Hmmmmph! If I ever go back, it’ll probably be for take out. I hate sweating while eating. It’s disgusting!

Ah, the place I had my «break up» lunch with the last boyfriend…*sigh* memories… lol Ok, I’ve eaten here twice and taken out twice and I like it fine. Pupusas are hard to find in Whittier, and although the BEST I’ve ever had are in Atlantic Square(Monterey Park), this one is so local, I’ll give it a close second. The staff are very sweet, though not the most efficent in the world. Overall, it’s not a bad place to get a quick Savladorian(or Mexican, they have that too but I haven’t tried it) meal on the cheap.

with a new office location comes new lunch time options! this salvadorean spot has to be one of my favorites so far. i’d only eaten here once before we moved offices, and since then i’ve been about 3 times and tried a few different menu items. being a pupuseria, i had to try their pupusas~! and they are delicious; fried to hell with tons of oil, prepared with lots and lots of cheez and always end up being the main feature of thee most satisfyingly unhealthy lunch meal of the week. my favorite are the papusas revueltas which contain beans, cheez and chicharron… greasy, meaty goodness! the squash, spinach, and plain bean pupsusas are also winning lunch time options. all the pupusas are between 2 and 3 dollars. they have this appetizer dish that costs $ 4.50 and consists of refried beans, fried bananas and cream… it’s delightful. ^_^ the yuka frita [it’s this deep fried root, kinda like a potato] is awesome. get it with the chicharrones on top and a little lime. they have lots of sweets on the menu too that i’ve yet to try… they have empanadas with banana, banana with honey, and quesadillas… but not the mexican kind, these are giant rectangular chunks of sugar and cheez. haven’t sampled one yet, but it looks super yummy~! will update when i do! the only downside to this place is that ordering take out is kind of a hassle. the food is piping hot so it ruins the styrofoam containers sometimes and the salsa and curtido [i call it salvadorean kimchi… similar concept, just that the cabbage is not fermenting. ha.] are placed in plastic baggies that they tie up at the top. kind of a hassle, but the foods are very delicious and worth the trouble every once in a while :) eat in if you can!

Espanol comes in very handy, especially when stopping by El Comedor. I dropped in to place an order for a dozen pupusas, only to find the lady cook as the only person there and unable to speak Ingles. Unfortunamente, la unica tipa de pupusas que lo tiene un especial eran las revueltas, y no puedo comer carne.(Ok, I can’t write anymore Spanish– that was painful.) So, en Espanol, I explained to her that instead of the special, I wanted some revueltas, loroco, and squash pupusas, and that I’d run to the bank and then be right back. So after my bank run, I returned and my smokin’ hot pupusas were ready, and I headed home. The pupusas were still as yummy as I remembered! Entonces, si tu puede hablar Espanol, ven aqui al El Comedor y practice tu facultades!

For the first time last night I went to El Comedor Restaurant. I drive by it everyday on my way home and have always wanted to stop by for the past year. I walked in and immediately a friendly face greeted me, I said to my self«I already like this place» I placed an order of cheese & meat popusas, a side of plantains that came with refried beans and cream. Yuuuuuum The best Salvadorian food that I’ve had in years. Oh and by the way they serve Salvadorean & Mexican food incase you and a friend can’t decide on what to eat.
