Whittier Uptown Association

Uptown is a magical half mile stretch of boutiques, gastropubs, juice pressers, cafes, and fine restaurants. In the last few years there’s been an influx of new establishments that take their respective crafts very seriously. I haven’t seen anything like it in LA. It’s almost like a piece of Portland in LA. If you haven’t been, I highly recommend. Must see to appreciate.

Uptown Whittier, where oh where do I start? Hidden treasure in an area originally known to those remembering it as Quaker town. Also home to Richard Nixon’s Alma mater, Whittier College.
With that said, there are a lot of places to venture by yourself, with friends & families frequenting this charming part of the area. Growing up I remember before the 1987 earthquake, it wasn’t always vibrant. That was then and this is now. — happy accident.
Around that time the big deal was when the Hilton Hotel was built, when they filmed the movie Masters of the Universe with Dolph Lundgren (I guess the earthquake brought good luck & fortune) and the 90’s brought a night club called «Q’s» (closed down last as Ibiza’s in the later 2000’s) Now sadly some liquidation furniture outlet.
But it’s still standing, thriving more than ever. You’ve got the Whittier Village Cinema, (lil history; years ago before they re-​opened, it use to be an adult theater… lol true story).
You’ve got a record store, 50’s diner, vintage collectibles, toy shops, art gallery, cigar lounge, hookah lounge, bookstores, candy shops, Mexican art/​gifts, Color me mine — ceramic art, Bark n Bake pet goodies, tons of clothing shops (The Basement 6745 & Melrose Vintage), comic book store — Geeks, bicycle shop, musical instruments, pawnshop, antiques, coin shop, tattoo & piercing parlor, dance studios, board shop, an old camera shop, dollar store, bars/​clubs & restaurants galore, hotel down the street — now Radisson Hotel (with nice bar lounge/​pool area) and probably more specialty shops & businesses I probably forgot to list. They have weekly farmers markets, occasional events such as car shows, antique fair, home to the annual Whittier Christmas parade & some family festivals-​I suspect those might have got squashed in the recent years :(
Love Whittier! Proud & so happy my children got to experience it! Big believer in supporting our community & local schools! Uptown Whittier has something for everyone! Tons of parking through out entire village.
In re: to 3^rd paragraph, unless your late 30’s & over, most likely you have no idea who Dolph Lundgren is & that movie referenced. IMDB it, it was a horrible forgotten b movie, but cheezy classic to us who still remember it.

President’s Day was celebrated earlier this week. So, how appropriate to recognize the National Bank of Whittier, it’s a historic building in uptown Whittier, CA. Built in 1923 and added to the National Register of Historic places in 1982, also mounted on the building in 1927 is the Whittier village clock (c)1915.
The building is of national significance as it was the site of our 37^th president of the United States, Richard Milhous Nixon’s first law office in 1938.

Uptown Whittier is a cute street to come down to for a family Sunday. If youre over 21, you could also come down on a friday/​saturday night for some fun at the bar. There are record shops, a library, thrift stores, snack shops, and more. I like it here :)

Uptown Whittier is a very old district that had lost its swag but is just recently starting to pick up. For years it was home to subpar entities and now is rising to the standard it should be. This is just a quick review on Uptown Whittier, feel free to get the feel yourself!

While driving by, the shops seem unremarkable and leave no real impression other than the idle thought that they probably don’t get much business and will die a horrible profitless death. What drew me, however, was that this certain area has a «ye olde town» feel.
The sidewalks, rhythmically patterned with weathered, uneven pavement and cobbled bricks, all lined with looming trees and cars occupying every parking space even on this gloomy, overcast day was a sight to breathe in. I can only imagine the same scene where the trees provide much needed shade on far sunnier days, where the streets aren’t randomly freckled here and there with people, but with entire families, friends and people on dates copiously flooding the place in it’s entirety. (I’m totally in the wrong season. Bleh.)
I found the on-​foot experience to be far more gratifying than driving by with my 40 second preview layered with hasty judgments. To my surprise, the shops aren’t bad at all. Gems are sprinkled all over the place. Mainly, Envy LA, Green Dollar (the quintessential poor college kid store), Trax (Hipsterettes may like this), Two skate shops, one of which Concave and the other. I forgot.
There’s also a movie theatre, and less than a block from each other are both Starbucks and Coffee Bean. There’s also an alarming amount of B grad restaurants within close distance of each other (actually I only saw two, but that sounds an alarm in my book.)
So take a walk, or even take a date and enjoy, but you probably shouldn’t eat anything.
