1. Outdoor seating. Nice. 2. Relaxed atmosphere. Hooray! 3. Had the $ 7.99 Burrito and Beer special. Cheap and good and filling. 4. Friendly and attentive service. 5. Great selection of Latin Beers. Ate on a chill night on a Monday. Very low key. Enjoyed.

When Mixto first opened it was amazing. The BEST margaritas & specialty drinks, outstanding food, and great staff. Now, it is only a dim reflection of what once was. Food approaches fast food tex-mex levels & drinks are over priced and insipid. The staff is chaotic at best. I used to go to Mixto up to 3 times a week. Now I just walk by on my way to Caprice, Circa, Nikki’s, Etc. There has been a great deal of talk that MIXTO is closing the end of October 2013. If true, it will not be missed for what it is but for what it once was.

Food is AMAZING. The wait staff and service is absolutely TERRIBLE. Its unfortunate because the food is so delicious. We got a crab, mango and avocado salad that was to die for and the server took it away before we had even finished it. If they would hire new servers, I would go far more often.

This I my second visit, I came back because I liked it so much the first time. This visit wasn’t as good. The place was half empty but I were told a 45min wait. ??? After ordering drinks at the bar and waiting, a table became available after 15 minutes. The waitress was very good and friendly. She recommends several entrees which were good. However one dish came out cold. She appropriately recovered by apologizing and eventually comp’ing the meal. That is great customer service that saved this review. The mojitos were ok. We liked the margaritas more. The food was good but don’t expect Mexican food. It is Latin American so it’s different in the ingredients.

Fun ambience, tasty drinks, great location, mediocre food, terrible service. Ambiance: Fun, loud, with eclectic day of the dead photos all around Food: Brisket — overall really bland Tacos — tiny tiny!!! Four dollars for a two bite taco? Chorizo clams — delicious, steamed well and perhaps the only good thing we ordered Mojito — nice and refreshing Sparkling sangria — tasted like juice, very light on the alcohol Service: The service was brutal. It took nearly three hours to eat, not because we had a large group, but because it literally took an hour to take our orders, then another half hour to bring one round of drinks, half the table got their food a course before the other. Highly disappointing. Overall the location makes Mixto a great place to stop by for drinks at the bar. I’d skip the food.

The new chef is phenomenal and the drinks are super fresh and tasty! They squeeze lemons by hand for their sour mix and it makes their margaritas really delicious. During lunch you can get a HUGE burrito(choose from 8 – 10 menu items) and a beer for $ 9 bucks. How awesome is that?! I went with a friend and we split the burrito and ordered a guac and extra beer and it was plenty of food. The tofu is the best I have had, as they pan cook it with spicy, mesquite stuff and pack it in a burrito with white beans and corn. The servers are really nice and their patio seating is really nice, right on the water.

Another place in Wilmington that I visit each time we come down south to visit. Love their food. The chips and salsa keep coming and are delicious! We always love the seafood tacos, so so delicious and taste fresh every time. Its such a close walk to the river and such a unique building in itself, we just love it! Can’t say enough :)

Came here with a work crew for the lunch — the décor is great(Dia de Muertos items all over the place) and the location is pristine. The server was friendly, we discussed Girl Meets World and Bob’s Burgers, and our experience was pleasant enough. The food just doesn’t do the trick. A very wide range of items(hamburger with Mexican-food trappings, Cubanos, burritos, tacos, bowls, salads, and on) didn’t materialize into anything special when they arrived. The seafood paella I had was mushy and flavorless with the liquid unevenly absorbed. The reviews from the others(hamburger w/queso and chiles — nothing to write home about, pulled beef burrito — undercooked rice that she separated from the meal) weren’t so great. This was my second time here, and probably the last, unless someone else wants to try it for themselves(or we really, really want to go somewhere with a cool theme). The food doesn’t have a clear identity or a clear flavor.

Terrible. We took my mother for her birthday to this establishment and regret it. Food. First off, the food… It was bland at best. Even after adding salt(mind you, I am usually not an add-salt-type person) and adding tons of hot sauce, the food just didn’t have much flavor. Being with family, ten of us, we tried a number of different items on the menu, from fajitas to quesadillas to burgers to paella to the«saltado». Across the board, we were really unimpressed. Not one of us had a meal that was tasty, and even though moderately priced, not a meal that was worth it. The one item that stood out was the Queso appetizer. The guac was fresh but tasted like someone started to make guac and stopped midway, so I hope you really like you like your guac to just taste like avocados. Drinks The Micheladas(think beer bloody Marys) were just plain bad. Heavy on the terrible bloody Mary mix, heavy on the salt(I think they might have used it all here and ran out before they could prepare our food) so much that you forgot there was ever any beer in there. The mimosas were 95% orange juice, 5% sparkling wine as an afterthought. Service While the server was attentive and good for the most part, he stated that due to it being Cinco de Mayo they could not do anything for my mother’s birthday. That’s fine, we requested just a sombrero and that our group would sing for her, no need to gather the rest of the restaurant staff since he expected large crowds. Well, the restaurant barely filled up to 40%, I wouldn’t call it busy by any stretch of the imagination and I hope they don’t consider that a rush. Never received the sobrero. On my second request to our server, he stated the restaurant didnt carry desserts, so even request for a small pastry with a candle could not be met. Offered to bring a tea light for us to sing happy birthday to her. We waited 10 minutes, but I guess since gratuity was included and I had already picked up the check, he never came back around. He was attentive with drinks so I wouldn’t completely write him off, but his unwillingness to go the extra mile really set to the tone for this establishment. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. The décor was cool and the place looks fun from the outside but Will never return here. TL, DR: Food is bland, service is OK, go elsewhere.

I swear this space is just cursed. I haven’t been to Wilmington in awhile but went to school there and always remember how amazing this restaurant space was. It’s perfect wide open space inside and a great patio looking out to the river. I came here with a group of girls for a bachelorette party the service was great and the white sangria was banging but other than that I would never come back here to eat. All of our food was tasteless and boring I would never consider this a Latin restaurant more like a really bad Mexican restaurant. With all the other great restaurants in the area I would skip on Mixto.

Horrible experience !! Looks cozy & welcoming, but unfortunately the service is poor and the food is bland. Latin is not their menu, it’s more like Mexican meets American. I can sum it all up by saying that they serve fries that look & taste like frozen bagged fries. The waitress got our order & didn’t come back to ask us if we needed anything after 25 mins. My mother-in-law had to go get her. It was just a rookie move on her part and to add to it she spilled food on me and said sorry and walked away. Didn’t genuinely feel sorry or try to give me a napkin. I will say that the manager was very nice & tried to fix the situation. Sadly the waitress had ruined the chances of that happening. Looks like a good bar but I wouldn’t be able to tell you, cause I never got the chance to order a drink. Only thing good is the chips & salsa !

Love love this place … great location, atmosphere, decent food, and good drinks. Not 100% authentic Mexican but you have to remember that you are in Wilmington. Yesterday I had the fish tacos(excellent) and a spinach /sweet potato salad and it did not disappoint. I do miss the award-winning flounder dish they used to offer. The only downside is that I would say it’s not the best place to take small children. No kids menu, and I was surprised to discover at an inopportune moment that they do not have any changing tables in the restrooms. Seriously Mixto … that’s not cool. Perhaps no one on staff has ever changed a diaper. But anyway, the food made up for it! And my daughter was happy to share my salad & tacos.

This is a good spot for gamblers to dine because its always a gamble if its going to be good. I’ve eaten here several times and while I have had some decent food here I can’t say I’ve ever had anything that was great. I think they run out of stock on a fairly regular basis or perhaps don’t consult their menu as the dishes are frequently made with substitutions. Overall the best thing about this place is the location, so if its nice out and you’d really like to sit outside go here for that, but keep your expectations low.

Came here for lunch after they have a new chef and revamped the menu. Got the cocoa chile carne and slow roasted pulled pork tacos and both were very tasty. Service was slow though. Our group of four got there around 11:45 and there was only one other group there, yet it still took us 30 minutes+ to get the food(all of us ordered tacos/salad, nothing complicated). Went back for dinner the same week and service was much better. Started with the Crispy BBQ pork spare ribs and for entrée we had the coffee rubbed filet and nex Mexican spiced duck confit. All three dishes were very good. The duck was perfectly cooked and the sweet potato hash went really well with it. The creamy grits that came with the filet paired really well with the steak. The atmosphere was casual and cheerful, good for a casual night out or a date. I’ve never been here before the change of chef and menu so I can’t compared the food now to how it was before, but I would definitely come back for more delicious chow!

I wanted to like this place more because it came recommended by a few people I talked to while I was in town. The place has a nice atmosphere but the food just didn’t impress me. Started out with the a Mojito. It was a little sweet and you couldn’t taste the mint. The 2nd one was less sweet but still you couldn’t taste the mint and they were both weak in the alcohol content. The salsa was the best part. It was fresh and flavorful, even if I had to add some heat to it. For an appetizer, I ordered the Lima Ceviche which was overpowered by citrus flavor and nothing else. No salt, pepper, cilantro or anything. And that’s pretty much how my meal was. The Tamales and the accompanied beans and rice had no flavor until you added the green chili sauce or what salsa was left. It’s possible I ordered the wrong things as others I talked to said other things on the menu were better. And I was leaning toward the Chicken and Chorizo tacos before switching to the tamales. Maybe I should have stuck with my original choice. Oh well. Not sure If I’ll come back here when I come back to Wilmington or not. First impressions do mean a lot.

Mixto was a nice find near the river, and the outdoor seating is a little slice of perfect on a clear night. Service was snappy and friendly, and the food was great. Not mind-blowingly great, but creative enough to show that the chef wanted to take some chances above and beyond the usual Latin fare. The décor felt a little bizarre; another good reason to sit outside if weather permits.

$ 5 for a beer AND a burrito? You must be joking… The good news is I’m NOT joking. Monday night brought this Wilmington tourist out to Mixto; my second visit in two years. And I will keep coming back for more. We sat at the bar and were treated to great conversation courtesy of friendly bartender George and a local guy who was a dead-ringer for Terry Bradshaw… a bonus for any Pittsburgher caught outside of the three rivers. So — the Monday night special is… are you ready? A BIG burrito(choice of shrimp, beef, chicken or tofu — my choice) AND your choice of the three Mexican beers on tap(I chose Dos Equis). I mean, come on. The embarassing part of the evening was that I offered to pick up the tab; not realizing that the special was what it was. Aren’t I hot stuff — picking up a TENDOLLAR tab? Not so much. The burrito was great as were the [free] chips and salsa. The beer, of course, was delicious and the atmosphere very inviting. Can you even eat at Taco Bell for $ 5 anymore? More importantly… would you want to?(Don’t answer — just go to Mixto. EVEN Tues-Sat when the burritos cost a little more. They’re still delicious, it’s just not as exciting…)

I can’t figure this place out. I really want to like it. The décor is amazing. It’s decked out in Day of The Dead art and is very spacious. They’ve been hosting salsa dancing here on Thursday nights for the past few couple months and it’s always a good time. I’ve been satisfied with their drinks on these nights(especially the sangria and Victoria beer!), although I did think it was pretty lame when they ran out of limes one night. If you’re a Latin restaurant/bar, you need a solid stock of limes… Then I visited for a late Sunday lunch two months ago and the food was terrible. I was disappointed just looking at the menu as it was not what I expected at all. Their dinner menu had more what I was looking for, but the prices were kinda high. The lunch menu, while cheaper, was mostly tacos and burritos. I ordered a veggie arepa. The arepa itself was good, but the veggies it came with overly oiled and very bland. And they weren’t Latin veggies — they looked like what you get at the grocery store for Asian stir-fry. The jicama slaw had barely any jicama, and there were no plantains whatsoever. My BF’s burrito was also bland and his mojito was the worst mojito we’ve ever had. Just undrinkable. They were also playing loud rock music the entire time, a mix of American and Spanish-language rock. It was too loud. It doesn’t seem like anyone on staff or in the kitchen is Latin. Granted, we are in Wilmington, not exactly the capital of diversity, and the restaurant is probably aiming for fusion rather than pure authenticity, but still… I don’t know how this chef won an award last year. Maybe he wasn’t working in the kitchen when I visited. I am willing to try the food again. I might have had better luck with a meat arepa instead of veggie. But I hope the owners/chef didn’t open a Latin restaurant just because they thought it was the trendy thing to do. That’s not a good enough reason. You have to love this type of food and be able to pull it off.

Service was a little slow, but then again it was a Saturday night. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. The food overall was decent, nothing to write home about. But all of this doesn’t matter, because after we paid we saw a giant rat climbing down the wall. I understand that there are some creatures in every restaurant, you just can’t help that, but I have never seen one in the dining area of a restaurant.
