Fried fish really greasy, both slaws just below average, FF not crispy, I got a chicken breast to go, really dry. :(

I ate lunch at this place yesterday and it was pretty decent. First, I only picked it because it had good reviews on Unilocal. Second, I don’t know what«Carolina style» BBQ is, but I’m not sure that this was it. Third, I prefer a true hole-in-the-wall when it comes to BBQ, I’m talking checked table cloths and picnic tables, the smoker sitting right by the back(or front) porch. A serious hole. This place was NOT it. Outside of that, the collard greens and BBQ beans were delicious. The half rack of ribs I had were decent, not the best! Ribs I’ve had in Memphis, Cincinnati, and Saint Louis have all been better. If you want to know why, I would say that the meat did not pull cleanly off the bone, and there was a good amount of fat left over. Not the kind of ribs where you suck them clean! They also had a bit of a «hammy» taste, I prefer a charcoal or hickory, anything really. Having said that, it was all around not bad, but I would pick another place next time I visit for sure

Mr. BBQ has been around a long time. They have good BBQ, tea, and hushpuppies. The burgers are good too. I can’t really speak to the rest of the menu. What I can speak to, however, is the chaotic ordering system they have. If you have never been to this place, as soon as you walk through the doors – BAM – you are at the counter. There is no depth at all, just room to your left or right. At busy times, people will be backed up out the door, as well as to the left and right. I have seen several patrons skipped over b/c someone aggressively fought their way to the counter to get noticed… and I’ve seen those««ignored» patrons walk right out the door seconds later. Just sayin’…

Great BBQ! Great value! Unassuming from the outside but the food is fantastic! Chopped pork sandwich with coleslaw was delicious. Potato salad and hush puppies are perfect! The desserts are out of this world too!

I was in the mood for really good BBQ. Tried this restaurant while out visiting family. Really disappointed. The sliced pork did not seem fresh and was really dry. The fries were cold. Fried chicken was really greasy. Too noisy and crowded for my liking but would overlook if the food was better.

This is my favorite BBQ restaurant in NC, if not the entire country. Proof: whenever I plan a trip from Durham to my hometown of Asheville, I make sure to be on the Peter’s Creek Porkway by lunchtime. My only complaint is that it’s not open for my return trips on Sunday.

I think Mr barbeque is a million times better than little Richards Q. Richards Q is dry, hotdogs and cheeseburgers are good though at little Richards. When I go to Marcos car wash, I will get some lunch while my car is being cleaned. I just don’t care for Richards Q.

This place has great food and the price isn’t bad either! Everything that I have had here is delicious. My favorite side is definitely the mashed potatoes and gravy! They have pieces of pork in the gravy which makes it extra delicious. The chopped bbq is my favorite to get, the sliced was a little bit dry to me, but still good! The fries, hush puppies, and onion rings are all delicious too. Oh and don’t forget the pecan pie, it’s fantastic. If you’re in the mood for quick bbq, this is definitely the place for you to go!

Hadn’t been here in a while, got the chopped tray. They gave me a fork but could’ve used a spoon, more like BBQ soup, too much dip in the mix. Portions little on the light size for the price.

Mr Barbecue for me is a bit nostalgic as I grew up eating here throughout the years! In business for over 50 years, Mr Barbecue is a hopping place for lunch throughout the week! From 11am-2pm it can be hard to get a seat. This is the Lexington Style BBQ that I prefer over the Eastern. Any day of the week you can get the chopped sandwich with hush puppies and tea for about $ 5. I prefer the chopped plate that comes with ample portions of BBQ, slaw(red or white), fries, and hush puppies. Rarely will you find fat or waste in the BBQ. The puppies are my favorite of any style whether at a BBQ joint or seafood joint. The dogs are popular amongst many regulars, which come toasted and ready to devour! The fried chicken is expertly fried with a light but flavorful batter! Yes I may be partial due to the history, but at least give Mr BBQ a fair shot!

Great hamburgers. I am on a restricted diet. And the butterscotch pudding was great. The employees were nice and they keep it clean. It gets crowded fast. And quick to reserve a table for the rest of the group. The prices are great.

Wow, didn’t realize that it had been so long since I’d eaten at this venerable Twin City BBQ joint. Dropped in recently, and grabbed a quick lunch — a hot dog, FFs, and a Coarse Chopped BBQ Sandwich. Everything was very good, though the pork seemed to have a bit of age on it. They have daily specials each weekday, and the value here is very nice. The ordering process is a little hectic when crowded, but it works, well at least most of the time. Plus they open a 10:30AM if you need a hot dog, fried chicken, or BBQ early — been known to happen to me from time to time.

Awesome food at a great price. Mr. Barbecue has been a Winston-Salem landmark since the 60’s and they still pit cook their Barbecue over hickory. Best cue in Winston-Salem.

We stopped at Mr. Barbecue around 2 in the afternoon, passing though with two kids under 5 who loved the name. Tuesday special chop plate was delicious. NCBBQ done wonderfully. I got the baked beans instead of the BBQ slaw, both of which were really good. Next time I might sub the fries for something else, just because that was the only thing left at the end of the meal. Then we tried the banana pudding. My husband thought it was«good»(he likes the whipped cream normally). I loved it. Served warm, rather than cold, with a meringue on top and custardy pudding. I have to figure out how make it for winter desserts at home. I would go out of our way to visit again.

First time trying the place and have to say it wasn’t to bad. Not a huge fan of the ketchup based BBQ but with the smoke flavor in the que it was not to bad. I have tried Lexington BBQ and honestly have to say the BBQ was more flavorful here. I had the BBQ special which is a sandwich, puppies or fries and a drink for $ 5.99. One would think at that price they would skimp on the que but they didn’t. I went with the hush puppies and they were warm and flavorful when I ate mine. The tea was sweet and ice cold on this hot spring day. I would definitely recommend the sandwich and puppies and I will be back to try something different next time and hopefully it’s just as good.

Just good classic BBQ. True Lexington barbeque. Fans of real down home barbeque will appreciate this place. «I’ll be back» says my wife who grew up near here.

There is a reason that Mr. Barbecue has been around since the 60’s. In my opinion, this is some of the best Western NC style BBQ you can get in Winston. I always preface by saying that I am an Eastern style guy, but for what it is, this Western style gets it right. I would definitely recommend this place over Little Richards(I know it’s sinful to say in Winston, but I think Little Richard’s is overrated). You know that you are in for some good BBQ as soon as you walk up to a place. At Mr. Barbecue you walk up to stacks of chopped wood and the smell of hickory burning. This is the kind of place where you order up at the counter and they bring your food out on a tray. The people working the registers are always friendly, and the food normally comes out quickly, even when they are busy. I’ve had a couple of options here. The chopped BBQ is very good. It is not fatty as I’ve found with some other Western Style places, and you can tell that they still use actual wood. This gives it the nice hickory smoked flavor. The sauce that they offer here is kind of in between an Eastern and Western sauce. It is runnier like a vinegar based sauce, but doesn’t have any red peppers in it. It won’t blow you away with spice or flavor, but it is a good addition to the meat. Their sides are all pretty good. The hushpuppies are probably my favorite. Very crunchy with lots of flavor. If you are choosing between the hushpuppies and fries, go with the puppies. The fries are mediocre. They serve both styles of slaw. I normally don’t like BBQ slaw, but the offering here is pretty good. The potato salad is good. It has less mustard than most, but they add a lot of relish or pickle juice to it that gives it an interesting flavor. I had the fried chicken the other day and was disappointed. The chicken was nice and juicy, but the skin was not crunchy at all and kind of soggy. I would definitely stick with the BBQ. Mr. Barbecue has earned it’s place in Winston food lore. If you are looking for some good Western style BBQ served in a place with a lot of local history, then Mr. Barbecue is your place.

I visited Mr. Barbecue a little before noon on a Saturday. They were relatively busy with some people in the dining room and plenty of to-go orders. There isn’t a lot of room to line-up before someone takes your order so you just have to linger around. I ordered the chopped plate and a hot dog with chili, slaw, and mustard. The food was ready pretty quickly. The BBQ came drenched in dip(sauce) and was really moist. The BBQ slaw was a bit sweet for my liking but wasn’t bad by any means. The fries and hushpuppies were both tasty as well. The hot dog was delicious. The chili is pretty dry and I was worried but it had tons of flavor. The cole slaw and mustard paired perfectly. I’ll definitely be back to Mr. Barbecue in the future.

Do you remember the radio commercial for Mr. Barbecue? «Eat Mr. Barbecue, it’s good for you. Eat Mr. Barbecue, it’s fun to chew! Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs & fries; the best doggone barbecue and taste-tempting pies.» Jerry and I met friends for dinner at Mr. Barbecue prior to going to a Marketplace Cinemas movie. My friend had the BBQ Salad with iceberg lettuce, cherry tomatoes, red onion, green peppers. The chopped BBQ that topped the salad was tender and lean with little bits of bark. I had the rib plate with hushpuppies, potato salad, and white slaw. The half-rack of already separated ribs had a nice outer bark and fell off the bone when I went to take a bite. However, they were too fatty for my tastes. The potato salad had a mayonnaise dressing with a bit of mustard and sweet pickle. I liked the oblong hushpuppies with flecks of black pepper in the cornmeal. Jerry had the ¼ BBQ chicken with hushpuppies, BBQ slaw, and fries. The side of dip was sweet and tangy with plenty of black pepper. I particularly enjoyed tearing off some of the juicy breast meat and dunking it in the sauce. Jerry ordered a pint of chicken livers for us to share. They were cooked to order with a well-seasoned crunchy outside and a tender, moist center. This was our favorite dish of the evening. On Friday, Jerry and I returned for lunch. The restaurant was hopping with customers arriving as soon as a table opened up. Everything seemed to flow well; we didn’t notice any bottlenecks. I ordered the daily special, two hot dogs all the way with fries and iced tea. The hotdogs were simply prepared and perfect. The bun was toasted and the dogs were grilled on a flat-top then loaded with chili, white slaw, mustard, and chopped onion. I think the hotdogs fixed all the way are the best item on the menu. Jerry had the 3-piece fried chicken dinner with hushpuppies, mashed potatoes & gravy, and baked beans. The piping hot chicken(breast, thigh and leg) was lightly floured, fried crisp, and was so moist juices dripped out as we tore into the chicken. The homemade cream style mashed potatoes were topped with brown gravy. The baked beans had onion, green pepper, and bacon in them. I knew we would be taking food home with us, but I had to try the Carolina Hot Legs. This dish took their full-sized fried chicken legs and tossed them in a Texas Pete wing sauce. We both liked the extra zing added by the hot sauce. If you order the fried chicken, it will take 10 – 15 minutes to prepare, and the counter person will bring it to your table when it’s ready. Mr. Barbecue has thrived for over fifty years, and we see why customers continue to return time after time. Please check out our blog for more details at .

Dinner was okay last night. The staff who took my order were very friendly and efficient. They made sure you did not have to wait a while to get your plate out. We tried the chopped plate and the fried chicken dinner. We went with the friend chicken after all the stellar reviews for it here. Unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing. The skin wasn’t really all that crispy and was actually a bit soggy. I’m thinking the fried chicken was just having an off night there. The chopped plate was really good and I would definitely get that again. The pork was moist and I think they put just the right amount of sauce on it. The hush puppies were different than what I am use to but I actually really liked them. They have a thinner crust which I enjoyed. If you are looking for quick bbq eats this is the place to go! I would just recommend sticking with the pork dishes.
