Moynihan’s Pub

Moynihan’s Trivia on Wednesday nights is the best trivia night in Worcester, and I will fight anyone who says otherwise.

Worcester is a great city for dive bars. I’m not sure if that is a good thing or not but it is what it is.
I stopped in around noon on a Sunday and it was everything I expected. It was a little bit dark and a little bit beat up and felt just like a dive bar should.
The crowd here was a complete mix from language to profession to drinking habits to sports affiliation. It made for great people watching/​listening.
The drinks were stunningly cheap. The bartender was great and even served up bowls of fresh free popcorn.
So I enjoyed my adult libation or two and walked out with a smile on my face and another dive bar notch in my belt.

Moynihan’s is everything a dive bar should be: not too clean, not too nice — just cheap drinks and a decent crowd. You can keep busy with the jukeboxes, Keno, pool, or the occasional trivia game. A pretty mixed crowd between locals and college students, and never too crowded. All the staff are down-​to-​earth and willing to chat.

I really can’t believe I’m the first person to write a review for this place. Maybe you’re all like me and just waking up from the 2-​year hangover you’ve had since discovering the super cheap, super strong Wild Turkey 101’s and coke they throw at you.
Maybe it’s just collegiate nostalgia, but I can’t wait to find my Moynihan’s outside Worcester. The little built in benches are straight from the 1930’s, and were obviously built for people before the attack of the Big Mac. I could imagine all the factory workers from an up-​and-​coming Worcester dropping in for a side car or something.
Obviously, it’s no longer a little Irish dive, but it is the one place in Worcester where I felt comfortable joining in a game of pool with middle-​aged men with limited English – I seriously worked on my Spanish there one moment (at least I think I did… can’t be sure with 101) and then rubbed elbows with professors the next.
The bartenders were super-​friendly and let me change sports games to LOST. I’m not sure if it’s still the same staff, but I’d imagine it’s still pretty relaxed. Drinks are poured strong and in their proper glassware and remain stunningly cheap.
All in all, Moynihan’s is a great place to have a night not-​to-​remember. It beats the pants off the Blarney anytime with zero pretense.
