Top Tomato

Top Tomato is a no-​nonsense discount grocery store on South Broadway in downtown Yonkers, NY. Their largest «department» and main attraction is produce; they only sell discount fruits and vegetables, which means you need to pick carefully and enjoy them promptly, but if like us you cook and are flexible about which veggie appears when, this is a great place to pick up some bargains. They also have small meat and fish departments which we only rarely use and a couple of aisles of dry goods, which tend to be oriented to Hispanic tastes, although they also feature a large selection of pita breads! For fresh bakery goods, bulk items or gourmet products you’ll want to keep driving, but if you live nearby Top Tomato is a good place to fill-​up on general produce, particularly since there is free parking out front.

I give this Top Tomatoe 0 stars. The Mexican woman cashier short change me by 3 pennies. When I told her about she short changed me, she did not even apologize to me. She just went to another cashier to get pennies. And then she gave just 2 pennies. When I told her about the 1 other penny she looked at my receipt. I was forced to call Steve the manager to tell him about the situation. He then apologized to me and then gave a small bag of potatoes.

People count your change before you leave this store.

This place rocks when it comes to fresh produce! Can’t beat the price either! Come here every week and you get free bag of white onions with a $ 50 produce purchase.

Top tomato was the go to place for veggies from the Caribbean or South America. They surely went down on the produce for me. It used to be striving and now it has a bit of lack luster. They people look over worked and under paid, and the halal section is getting smaller. I really think they need to work on the appearance of the inside of the store, they have cans with a years worth of dust on them. Who wants that? I just try to stay away from the nasty fish mongers in the back as well. The fish is never cleaned fully.

Top in cheating customers, bad management, vegetables are never fresh, never again.

I’ve been coming here for over 10 years & it’s still one of the best places to shop for produce in the area. The prices & selection are fantastic. It is a small store, and is often very crowded on weekends when everyone is getting their shopping done for the week. The staff is very helpful; whatever you need, just ask & they will make it happen. Some of the produce isn’t super fresh, so you’ll likely have to do some digging to pick out the freshest items. They have a small section for fresh fish & meats, but I’ve never purchased either from here. I come back for the prices & selection and am a big fan of Top Tomato.

I love Top Tomato! I always go to this place whenever I need from fresh vegetables or fruits. It’s super cheap! You will never find lemons that sell 10 for 99 cents! Plus they sell many other items including ethnic foods and stuff you really only see in your country. It’s great whenever I need my hummous fix I’ll swing by hear, pick up authentic tahini that someone put their label on and sell for super cheap, instead of taking the extra time to make your own!
Friendly staff, always parking around, with a large parking lot and Rite Aid next door.
And they definitely take credit card now!

Green-​grocer par excellence in a funky Yonkers neighborhood. Great fruits and veggies and amazing prices. Great people watching, too!
How do they do it? The same way many Asian markets do… the produce is much closer to «ripe» than traditional grocery stores, so they buy much less expensively and pass the savings along. Also, cash only at the register saves them and you some $$$ too.
So, check the produce over carefully and plan on buying what you will use in the next few days, which is how we used to shop back when we ate fresh, cooked at home, and were much happier and healthier.
