Eddie Rockets is a terrifically old Dublin institution. As old as painting your door a funny colour to know which one’s your house when you’re walking home drunk and even older than meeting under the Clery’s clock in lieu of having mobile phones. The 50’s style American diner is a symbol of youth, innocence, affluence and giddiness. However, what all Eddie Rockets establishments in Dublin represent are a sobering haven. A safe zone where you can be as loud as you like while sponging up the drunkeness with paprika heavy chips and big, loaded, messy burgers that rarely get finished. They are temporary buffer zones that protect parents from the full blunt force of their child’s drunken state. Without Eddie Rockets, teenagers and early twentynagers would blast their way into their kitchens, wake up their parents with idiotic chatter and mess up a microwavable Uncle Ben’s rice dish before falling asleep on the couch. Because of Eddie Rockets, kids can come home in a steadier state, sleepy from the burger and will rock straight up to bed without making a fuss. And since they’ve already gotten sick on the table back in the restaurant, they’re not gonna need to hurl in the bathroom at home either. Jeez, why would anyone wanna have kids?

Nice burgers. I had a chocolate malt and a cheese burger band I loved them both. It was early saturday evening and quiet. The place is clean and the staff were friendly. I do think the whole Eddie Rockets concept is a little tired though.

Is this the grimmest Eddie Rocket’s branch in all of Ireland? It’s at least a strong contender, and I’ve been a couple of times to the one on Parnell St. Between the super slow service and ragged fake leather on the seats, it sure doesn’t make for a great experience. Its main advantage is the fact that it stays open late. Now, because of this, there’s a big bouncer at the door, and I mean right in front of it as to make it impossible for you to open the door, and this may look both confusing(is it closed yet?) and unwelcoming. On the other hand, I can attest to its efficacy in keeping the not so sober crowd outside, which is a good thing if you just want to have your food in peace. Still, you may choose to go in because it’s supposed to be fast food and it just might suit your night. Well, you have another thing coming. Even if the place doesn’t look half full, the food takes ages to be served, and it’s not like you’d be expecting a phenomenal burger being assembled. Worse even, it comes out charred. It’s a burger, not neurosurgery in outer space, there’s a reasonable expectation that it will be cooked properly, or at the very least somewhere between not raw and not burnt. So, my expectations weren’t high coming in here but they found a way to sink them even lower. Keeping the second star because the two staff members in there managed to be friendly enough throughout this sad episode. And because of the malts, they can’t mess those… or can they? :o

I haven’t been to Eddie Rockets in quite some time so it’s either my taste buds changed or their recipe changed. I went for my standerd Cheesy chicken with Cheddar and it just somehow didn’t taste the same anymore. I think the chicken was marinated differently. Still tasty but something was missing for me. Having said that I’d still go there and will enjoy this guily pleasure of a burger here.

Cant just cannot beat that oldschool style. Now i love the classic 1950s style, so eddy rockets is just the place to be for me. Expensive? Yes. Fun as all hell? Hell yes! This place has style written all over it, a thing i can appreciate a lot. Anyway continuing on to the food. Just get a double smokestack or chilly cheese dog if you want something manly. Most items ok the menu feel similar. After a while you will get your personal favorites(smokestack, chilly cheese dog, chicken bacon melt) its great but you miss variation. BUT! Hands down best shakes evaaar! Food 3⁄5 Style 5⁄5 Shakes 6⁄5 yeah im dead serious Also juke boxes are the most fun things to play with in a diner, just saying.

It’s mental at night, rude«bouncers», expensive as hell. Might as well go to Bobo’s across the street, their burgers are way better.

€ 6 for onion rings(that weren’t even that good!). I think never again.

Eddie’s at wexford street… Same formula as the others. The only noticeable difference is its location, as far as I could see… In this is its strength, like all of them; you know what you get, wherever you enter it.

I go here for one reason and one reason only… the chicken tenders with the Cajun dipping sauce. I actually crave them, its becoming a problem to be honest. Also, I’m not averse to their chocolate milkshake, which are so thick that you could eat with a spoon! But thats about it to be honest. The burgers I can take or leave, but its been years since I’ve tried them that I may be missing out… who knows. I did pig out today and got the cheesy fries, but they put too much cheese sauce on them that I couldn’t really eat them… they were drowneded(sic). Regarding the décor, it’s so clichéd it’s comical. And the jukebox points at each booth never seem to work, so my advice is not feed them your well earned 20c coins. The prices are a bit high for my liking too, I don’t think the food is really worth that much. Other places in the area do some of the similar dishes for in and around the same price, but they give you a side with them like a salad or fries. Here everything is priced separately, which can be a good thing too… enough said.

I have to say that I don’t like places like Eddie Rockets. If it isn’t 1955 and it isn’t in America, why pretend to be either of those things? I am usually a great fan of kitsch, but places like Eddie Rockets, even the ones that are in the States really bother me. I just don’t see the point. If the food is good enough, shouldn’t that be enough to set your restaurant apart from the rest? Why can’t it just be a diner??? I guess I am being too harsh. The food is decent, but not really my kind of thing. I was dragged here by a friend who was dying for a milkshake and I have to say the shakes are superb. The rest of the food is pretty standard diner-fare, which really makes me pissed off because why can’t it just be a diner? ANYWAY, obviously this is some sort of psychosis I am dealing with here. To sum up, Eddie Rockets is regular food in a fun and festive 50’s diner atmosphere. I, personally, think there are so many better choices in this area that deserve to be patronized over this place.

Straight up, does exactly what it says on the tin, not such a novelty anymore American Diner circa 1959 imitation. Tasty but at the top end of the fast food price range. Really nice burgers and shakes, though the chips aren’t the same since they stopped putting paprika on them. Pricewise, € 4.95 for said paprika-free chips is just plain cheeky. Empty Pockets is right.

Eddie Rocket’s is an Irish-American diner, not in the sense that your cousins are Irish American though, it’s more of an Irish interpretation of the 50s American dream. Juke boxes, red leather booths and sleek silver counters abound. It’s like the diner in ‘Grease’ except with filled with loads of pasty Irish, appearing even pastier under florescent lights(my good self included). I’m not knocking Eddies though. It’s grand for a fun and casual meal and you are guaranteed to feel full(but maybe a little bloated) after getting your teeth into a burger and chips here, just don’t expect a light meal. Not the most veggie friendly menu in the world. It’s a diner so naturally the focus is on burgers, chicken and hot-dogs but there is a veggie burger, something you surely wouldn’t have got back in the 50s! Also, you’re in an American diner so you are duty bound to refer to chips as fries and minerals as soda, well not really but why not get in the spirit! This branch of Eddies is jammers after the pubs close so you may be waiting for a table, just try not to fall asleep — Eddie won’t be pleased!
