I love being in Temple Bar, so when one of my friends told me about Purty Kitchen, I knew I had to check it out. By day it is a gracious restaurant. Please excuse my ignorance, as I know nothing of the food this place caters(however, I have only heard good reviews). But by night, it is an awesome nightclub, which plays the best new music and old nostalgic hits! The dance floor is on a platform up above the second floor bar, and has crazy lighting. The people are of a pretty random assortment, but whatever! There’s also a few places to sit if you’re not in the mood to dance your night away. I cannot recommend this place enough for a students night out on a Tuesday! :) Especially if you’re really, really broke.(Hello, recession?) The only experiences I’ve ever had here are on Tuesday nights, so I can’t speak for the rest of the week, but have a lot to say about the darling Tuesdays! Drinks are the cheapest around and I’m proud to say that I’ve spent € 40 on an entire night out at the Purty Kitchen on a Tuesday — which includes € 7 cab ride(each way) € 10 entry fee, and 6 drinks! I’m not joking, I was pretty surprised too! Drinks are from € 2.50.(That can be pretty dangerous so proceed with caution!) This place is recommended for a wild student night out, which definitely will not break the bank!

La bebida es la más barata y hay casi siempre música en directo. El diseño está bien.

It saddens me, because this place had so much potential, and there’s so little to choose from in Dublin anyway, but The Purty Kitchen(forever known as ‘that place where Bad Bob’s used to be) is simply abominable. Its not the space, which is great, nor the buzz, which is generally a really fun mix of students, tourists and mixed nuts — its the staff, the bouncers, the management, and everyone else who will ensure your night is ruined. It wasn’t the doormen, who were busy shouting ‘Shutthe f**k up will ya?’ to passing pedestrians who had nothing to do with the club, nor the interrogation line of four inspection stages that I had to get through to enter the club, nor the ten euro overhead just for being there, its mostly that I’ve never felt more babysat in a club in my life, and in Ireland this is big to say. I wasn’t the only one. There were dozens of people employed all over this place, seemingly just to act like assholes to the customers. Don’t lean on the railing, don’t walk up that side of the stairs, only drinks on the top floor, put those shoes on, down from the window, close the curtain, don’t dance there. There was one scuffle, a very mild one on the dance floor, with the two guys involved shaking hands after a moment and going their seperate ways — ten minutes later three bouncers appeared from nowhere and demanded the guys(who had by now forgotten anything happened) leave — that’s when i realised we were all being surveilled on video camera. Nice. The resentment in the crowd was palapable. When the music ended at two o clock, as is the ridiculous norm in Ireland, the happy students chanted for ‘one more tune’ as they are wont to do. No luck. nothing happened, but having had such a sh *t time and paying so much to do so, they were resiliant. Eventually, the DJ covertly started playing the desired one more tune, as they are wont to do, and would have ended everyone’s night on a high note in about 2 and a half minutes. the bouncers actually stormed the Decks and forced him to stop, after which the crowd was so hostile that they were lucky they didn’t incite a mini riot. No one would move, singing to themselves in defience of the absurdity, and it took a further 45 minutes to commence an exit from the club. Get a clue guys, I know you think you have a monpoly, but I can assure you, this is one punters face you won’t see again.
