Monti is a zone which now specialises in ethnic food, with around 5 Indian restaurants within a two minute walk of one another. Mother India, on Via dei Serpenti, is one of the more casual restaurants, without an excess of extravagant décor or any particularly distinguishing features. No matter, we are here for the food. The first thing I notice is a note in the menu: € 4 service charge for every couple. Good to know. This isn’t often applied in Rome so I hope that the service will be exquisite(it turns out to be very ordinary). The mixed pakoora arrive before we have finished our papadoms and are plonked down in the middle of the table. My mutton korma arrives soon after, a pale mustard coloured soup with some dark chunks of meat inside. The sauce is very runny and extremely average in taste(I could do much better). The meat is low quality. The saffron rice that I order separately is very good. My companion has ordered a vegetarian dish, with the request that they make it extra spicy. It isn’t very spicy at all. We drink sparkling water, not inspired to order beer or wine. The bill is € 40 for two main courses and a shared, slightly sad starter. There are so many better options in this area(Maharajah and Sitar to name but two) that I won’t be coming back.

My wife and I are Americans living in Naples, which doesn’t have a lot of «foreign» food. You can’t beat the pizza and Italian seafood in Naples, but, it gets a bit boring. So when we took a trip to Rome we were excited about the opportunity to eat other foods. Indian is a favorite of our so we found this place, Mother India. It was dark and weird and spooky… just like it is supposed to be!(Honestly I don’t know if that is how it really is, but it’s how our favorite place is back home). We got several dishes, all prepared well. The look was great. And the taste!!! Oh so good! The Garlic Naan was tops! The Dal(yellow) was one of the best I’ve had. We got a Saag(spinach) with mushroom and its was fine, spinach always seems gooey who cooked like that, but the taste was good. We also had a take on Bombay Potatoes(forget what it was called here) it was spicy but not so much that you couldn’t eat it, and like most Indian spicy stuff, it fades quickly. Service was great and spoke enough English that we had no issues. We will be back next time to Rome.

We moved to Rome from Canada. We are not strangers to Indian food and have had out share of great Indian food at home. We have been back to Mother India twice and plan to keep going back. The service is top notch– the servers and staff are great and have been incredibly friendly on each of our visits. The food is great and we find the value for the amount of food to be spot on. We have never left hungry! We would recommend this to anyone in Rome looking for a good meal and a good alternative to Italian cuisine. 5 stars!
