I love the Academy! There’s delicious coffee, wine and the most divine ice-​cream, plus you’ve got a choice of some of the most interesting and challenging films you’ll see in NZ — no major blockbusters here. The staff really know, and love their film stuff which makes you more than aware that you’re not in a multiplex and once you’ve made your way down the many stairs to the basement you feel like you’re in a wonderful secret hideaway. If you’re looking for great films and a great experience, look no further!

I love this small theatre as its the host for all the Fatso movies I get invited too, it also does a Wednesday deal where you can go for $ 8.
The ice cream, like Rialto is Kapiti — you choose the flavour and whether you want it in a cup or cone. There’s a wine bar and its more intimate and cosy — good for a date. The staff are friendly and the place clean and cute. I will always have it as one of my favourite movie venues along with Rialto over and above the larger Events and Hoyts cinemas.

Great selection of documentaries and films and a nice enough bar but what’s up with the seating?! I felt like a four-​year-​old, needing — not one but about 3 booster cushions — to be able to see the film, I went to. Sorry to moan but the seats are far too deep for shorties like me! :(

Great film, great drinks, great snacks, great prices. Can you ask for anything more? On Mondays they host the Auckland Film Society and I couldn’t think of a better venue in Auckland to host the screenings. Since they have started to offer fresh made popcorn, its become a regular treat. It is not too salty, stale, or too oily. A decent serving for $ 3 so at the end of it you don’t have regret of eating an obscene amount of popcorn. They have an extensive selection of wine, beer, and even cocktails. It is a great venue to host events and you can even rent out the small theater for a group showing. The selection of film is fantastic and in a world of megaplex cinemas, the Academy really holds its own in a charming modest way. Love that its next to the Central Library and its amazing Graphic Novel selection!

Arthouse cinema (always) beats mainstream cinema any day in my book. ‘Academy’ is located in Lorne Street, by the Auckland Central Library so I assume this cinema is utilised by all the arts, Comms & film students from AUT and Auckland University? If not, there are missing out. I recently came here to view one of the screenings for 48hrs Film Festival which proved fruitful. Bumped into some fellow friends & strangers who were equally communicative. You do need to walk down many flights of stairs before reaching the cinema, however there is a lift for the less mobile — good to know! ‘Academy’ screens quirky, indie film mostly — both homegrown and international. I think they do a cheap night during the week, however it’s a cool place to venture to — much like Capitol cinemas (however you walk up the stairs here) in Balmoral. Brings me back to my cinema visits in London, at Soho cinema. Just love.

I love this place, especially since I now live only a few blocks away. It’s a small intimate movie theater that appeals to a mature crowd. I don’t have to deal with any loud teenagers or other immature patrons here. I often come here alone and don’t feel out of place at all. I usually take advantage of their $ 5 (less than $ 4 USD!) Wednesdays and would catch a night show. They also serve coffee, wine, and beer here. Really friendly staff that work here as well. There’s assigned seating here… not sure if it’s just at this theater or if that’s the norm for movie theaters in NZ.

I have only been to Academy Cinemas once and that was when a friend hired out a cinema as a surprise for her boyfriend’s birthday! Pretty cute gift idea right? We watched Finding Nemo (one of their favourite movies)!
The Academy Cinema was the smallest movie cinema I had ever been into, but having said that I don’t normally frequent these art house cinemas.
I remember they had some good /​different snack and drink options and beer and wine were also available. The lobby has been refurbished recently and offers some more seating options, where you can enjoy the previously mentioned beverage or snack.
So apart from acting as a showcase for movies that aren’t screened in other cinemas — The Academy offers a unique service with their cinema hire in that you get to choose the movie.

Seems hard to deny that the Academy is central Auckland’s nicest cinema. Not that it has a lot of competition. They went through a little stretch where their quality was certainly tailing off, but now (I believe this is due to a change of ownership) they’re starting to perform at a high standard again and the whole experience is that much better for it. I particularly like watching films in their teeny weeny secondary theatre. It’s gorgeous. So small and good. I’m a big fan. Plus they have this massive stairwell you have to traverse to get down to the place which is a definite plus. Who doesn’t like stairs?!

The Academy is the only place in Auckland that screens both four hour long Portuguese films that are famous/​infamous for nothing happening in them, and have sound mixes so low you can’t hear what people are saying when do they talk, and crowdpleasers like Amelie. It’s not just «foreign» films though; there are lot of films screened here that you don’t need subtitles for. Basically if you’re someone who never really enjoys what they have at Hoyts or Event, this is a place to make your film going home. They’ve just done a refurbishment, and it’s looking much swisher here, although still pleasingly low key.
The Academy is also home to the Auckland Film Society, who screen classics, forgotten NZ films, and international films you may not have come across.
Note if you aren’t able to use the stairs to access the Academy, there’s lift access through the library but it pays to arrange this with The Academy in advance if you’re going outside of library hours.

The academy theatre located under the Auckland City Library is a pretty cool, grungy place for slightly off beat films and cult classic screenings. They often have film festival movies playing, rotating about four films at anyone time on their two screens. They use to screen ‘The Room’ every Friday evenings which was so much fun, but sadly that’s no longer happening (I think the guy who use to host it left). It’s a little bit hidden which I like, they sell alcohol and ticket prices are standard. I’d recommend checking their site every now and then, you never know what they might dig up to play.
Hours (from their website): The Academy is open almost every day except Xmas day from half an hour before the first session until half an hour after the start of the final session.

I have this lingering misconception about the Academy Cinema that because it’s under the library all its movies will be serious and educational and a bit humourlessly earnest. This is only partly true. While they do screen a lot of foreign and festival films, some of which are distressingly earnest, they also have more fun films, and host things like the 48 Hour Film Festival heats, or collections of local short films. Also the underground location, slightly old-​fashioned seating and booze on sale give the Academy a fun sort of art-​studenty feel — like you don’t need sensible shoes and a full-​time job to come here, but it probably helps if you have a beard and thick-​rimmed glasses, and maybe a windswept scarf. This all depends on what’s playing, of course. Some films are for old people, some films are for trendy eccentrics, some are for both. The Academy caters to all.
