When I think of an IMAX theatre, I think of happy American teenagers making out in the back row of a movie theatre. This is probably completely irrelevant but to me IMAX is a very American sort of Thing. Loud and Brash and in your face. If your deaf like me and find yourself constantly asking your companions what is going on(yes I know how annoying this is) then this is the perfect theatre. The screen is so large that you as a spectator are almost part of the action playing out on the screen. It’s pretty cool. I went to see Bruce Willis’s last flick here and I must say it was an experience! I was still hearing machine gun rattle weeks afterwards.

Boasting the first and only Imax screen in Auckland has held Metro Cinemas through for a long time now, I have to admit, I’m one of those who LOVES checking out the biggest movies in all it’s cornea-straining majesty on this screen. But in all honesty, Imax is the only reason I’ll venture in here, as apart from that, the complex really is just another cinema, albeit with a great food court and arcade, but there’s plenty of better food and a way better arcade five minutes walk down Queen Street, and the cinemas have really expensive parking since they don’t have any of their own, and the closest is The Civic car park, making for an even more expensive night out than movies already are. The last flick I saw here was The Hobbit, and I won’t lie, I absolutely LOVED it on the Imax screen, so I’ll be back for sure, but for anything other than that, I’ll stick with my local.

The Metro Centre is a means to an ends. If you’re off to the cinema or you’re in the middle of a conference at the Aotea Centre, this is the closest place to get food. This is not a good reason to come here. Despite me knowing this, I have eaten at various places in this food court. Only ever once at each place, and each time I’ve regretted it. The Chinese buffet food is dry, overcooked and extremely chewy, not to mention expensive. The sushi place offers really large pieces of sushi, but because they are so big, they tend to fall apart as you eat them, leaving a pool of rice and soy sauce in your lap or on your shirt. The pizza place is bland as all hell. The Indian food is about the only thing this food court has going for it… just don’t eat it before a long afternoon of conferencing or an evening movie — this place is destination food coma — population: you.

Imax or Metro Centre, whatever you wanna call it, whatever tickles your fancy. This is the home of absolutely everything you may need food wise. A pizza place that sells huge greasy slices, a sushi place that sells the most amazing deep fried sushi, a place that sells the cheapest and biggest samosas, a pita place, a place that sells phones and accessories, a place that sells ice cream, pancakes and cakes and a florist that sells flowers and teddies. Upstairs is the cinema, where you can watch a movie, 3D or sit in the gold class cinema. It is entertainment hub with cheap things to do. Recently they added a bowling alley, metro lanes. Outside Imax are some fast food stores you know the usual: Starbucks, McDonalds and good ol’ Carls Jnr.

People get divided — Imax is either a) too big, headache and neck-injury inducingly too big, or b) awesome!!! Whether you fit into the first category or the second pretty much comes down to whether or not you’re a fourteen year old boy. The whole place basically rests on this divide. Arcade games, Burger King, watery coke, neon lights, imminently Carl’s Jr. — these are all trappings that would have appealed to me in my early teenage years, and must still do to many wispy-moustached adolescents. For an adult like me(read: old), however, the place is too loud and too big and too plastic and too full of teenagers. If I want to see a movie I’ll go pretty much anywhere else, ideally somewhere that doesn’t make me feel like I’m on the set of the movie Mallrats. And if you don’t get that reference, you’re probably young enough that Imax will appeal.

A big, ugly/interesting(depending on my mood) American-style entertainment complex smack bang in the heart of the midtown area by Aotea Square. It has everything for a reliably predictable time, including chain eateries at the entrance, a large food court offering every heart attack concoction under the sun, a bowling alley, a gaming arcade, and a large Event Cinemas and IMAX complex in the upper levels. Notable I suppose for having the only IMAX screen in NZ. Changes have made me sad — there used to be big rocket-esque pillars at the bottom — no longer. Also, the massive Borders bookstore has now made way for a Carls Jr — to some maybe a neat little indictment on where our priorities lie these days!
