AMC Pacific Place

Not that I watch movies often, but when I do, this is the place I’ll go. US cinemas have a thing or 2 to learn from Hong Kong.
1. the layout of the theatre is square and small so there are no bad seats in the house.
2, I love the fact that you can pre-​book your seats in advance. There is no need to wait in line for new movies.
3. Seats are comfortable and plush. The theatre is usually clean and tidy. The environment makes a whole lot of difference when you’re watching a movie.
4. I’m not sure if they’re totally allowed but they are not anal about you bringing your own snacks and drinks into the theatre. We just keep them in our bags and they don’t check.
The only downside is that movies can be expensive here because they show most movies in 3-​D. $ 130 a pop can add up quickly. You can buy the 3-​D glasses for $ 7(?) or bring your old ones.

Never a bad seat here. Even the front row is pretty good and not the super neck craning rows we have in the States. But it’s pretty expensive for a ticket ($ 130HKD) here even if you can bring old IMAX glasses instead of purchasing them again. Clean but the audience can be a hit or miss like usual. You can have anyone from young to old kicking your seat! Putting their feet up on your seat.

Was an average experience until the credits stayed rolling. … then the house lights came up full Blast and 6 cleaners started cleaning the theatre WHILE the credits are rolling. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. Upon exiting I spoke to the manager, Mr. Ng, who professed ignorance. …yeah right… what, was I born yesterday?

We went to see The Expendables 3 at AMC Pacific Place yesterday — the reasons why we chose this one were convenience (closer to our place that any other) and quality of the cinema. Buying the tickets online and collecting them at the venue was a good choice. We bought them through their website and took a minute to pick them up — there are only two ‘collect your ticket’ machines but they were both empty. Tickets at 90HKD a pricier than in its sister AMC at Festival Walk but we saved ourselves a trip to the other side.
The cinema has six ‘houses’ and the film had been allocated House 6, which is the one I was to last time too: big screen, comfy seats, plenty of legroom and shoulder width… the film better be entertaining because you can fall asleep otherwise (which is what almost happened to me yesterday night!!!). The seats are also at a level high enough so that you can a perfect view from everywhere. We picked central seats to prevent that risk though! They showed a couple of advertising, but even those were really good ones.
Toilets are pretty spacious and clean. And if there’s something I like is that, once the film is over, you’re allowed back in the cinema to exit through Pacific Place, which is great if you need to use the toilets or just have to get out that way for convenience. Most exits of cinemas I’ve been to before lead you to the street.
These cinemas are new, modern and well located for us and it’s always an exciting experience to watch a film in a big screen there. Shame that the film was a bit of a disaster…

Cinemas are cinemas. At the end of the day, the multiplex places are much of a muchness, with most punters choosing their cinema for either convenience, it’s near home or work — for a cheeky «business meeting» matinée, or what is playing.
My current favourite (not the most convenient, but shows all the latest flicks), is the AMC Cinema in Pacific Place. What I particularly like about this venue is their consistency. All the theatres are about the same size, holding over 100 persons (only two are maxed out at 77 and 39), they have lovely wide plush seat, the rake of the theatre means you get a decent view from all seats, and the theatres are square (HK seems to have a lot of cinemas which are like runways, where the screen ends up the size of a postage stamp from half way up). There are six screens, which show lots of 3D movies, and a ripping sound system (but could do with being a louder, as I am getting deaf in my old age).
Other facilities include the standard concessions stand, and a bar, which I have never used nor seen anyone use. The toilets are large and clean, and there is a small secret toilet by the bar (in case you need swift mid movie relief).
This theatre is not as big as their sister in Festival Walk, so the movies often turn faster, and you won’t have as many options, like seeing the 2D version. However, as well as the local and international blockbusters, this venue shows more of these «live» theatre shows that seem to occur in a few HK cinemas. Unlike the Palace in IFC, the AMC in Pacific Place only shows a handful across the weekend.
Movies come out on Thursday, and there are discounts on Tuesdays and before noon.
