One of the key symbols of Hong Kong, so if you need to check something off your list, then coming here is nice and important, I guess. Otherwise, it’s just filled with buses and buses of tourists and more tourists. There is a 7⁄11 in the mall next to the Square, but they know that tons of tourists visit, so their selection is tiny, and extremely overpriced — think airplane prices! In the summertime especially, it’s essentially a square packed with tourists and selfie sticks. And also a dozen or so people promoting day tours or bus trips around Hong Kong. This is a short, 5 – 10 minute walk, from the ferry pier, so you could make a short drop-by here if you’re already taking a ferry ride. Otherwise, there’s honestly nothing special here, you can get crowds of people and selfie sticks in so many other places in Hong Kong.

Not that I’m a snob or anything– but I always think class does come with pedigree and age. Here in Hong Kong there are some buildings and societies that exudes class without so much as lifting a finger– they just are classy and elegant. Given our history this does mean that predominantly, those which rank high on my classy list would usually be British/Colonial era buildings/organizations. The old Legco building, Court of Final Appeal– even the old Bank of China Building; they just speak of a different era which seems a lot more dignified. I have no quelms with the handover or the Chinese administration either– I think its the right thing to happen and we should be working hard to improve things here. Anyways, its not about politics either. The Bauhinia Square was built to commemorate the handover, there is a plinth that celebrates the return of Hong Kong and there is a huge golden bauhinia that signifies Hong Kong’s new identity– the bauhinia flower. Its all very big and a flag raising ceremony happens here ever so deadly serious stuff as well. the main thing I have with it is that– its just so tacky. Everything seems to have been built yesterday and now should be heralded as a national monument. These things have no history, placed in the middle of nowhere and the only people who come here are Mainland tourists because they have been told to do so. If you really had nothing to do, then come here and take a stroll. I would call it something you do when you are bored.
