Japan Home Centre

Note the location of store changed. New address is 23 Caine Rd. Just moved to HK a day ago from NY and was excited to visit JHC. Items were nicely merchandised, clean, and staff were helpful. Cool stuff and pricing was fair. I think I will be stopping by this shop often.

Located close to the escalator on Caine road (at Peel street), this JHC is fairly large and carries most items that they sell. I frequent this shop due to its location and good opening hours.
If you’re not familar with Japan Home Centre, it is a shop that carries a variety of relatively low cost houseware and sundry items.
The only item I have been (severely) disappointed with is the vacuum cleaner I purchased. It is, by far, the loudest vacuum cleaner I have witnessed in my life. However, if you work at an airport and love the ear-​splitting sound of turbines, it might just be the ideal for you.

When I first moved here, I discovered this place when looking to buy a hair dryer. Aside from home appliances, they carry household cleaning materials, plates and cups, plastic containers, blankets, pillows — basically, all your home needs.
The quality will not be the highest for the appliances. They will be basic but will get you by. You may want to visit Fortress if you want something that’s of higher quality. In any case I come here to buy light bulbs (much cheaper than ikea) and all basic home necessities.
This location is bigger than most Japan Home Centres.

I am strangely obsessed with plastic boxes (I am currently enjoying the ones where the lid seals, as it keeps my camera film dry from the HK humidity), and my go to place for these plastic boxes is the Japan Home Centre. This is a great home wares store that sells a variety of kitchen ware, bathroom ware, some electrical items like rice cookers, water kettles, toasters, stationery, lightbulbs, clothes hangers, and of course plastic boxes. It pretty much sells everything that you could want for the home, bar furniture and other big ticket items. There is even a small garden section in most stores.
The cost of the products varies a lot. The imported Japanese products are of course significantly more expensive than the Chinese copies, and frankly probably not worth the extra expense given it is probably only a chopstick. Generally, the products are pretty cost effective for what you get.
There are quite a few branches around HK, so you should never have to haul your purchases too far home. All the stores are pretty well laid out, and certainly more roomy than most independent home ware stores. At least you can browse an item without knocking down half the shop.
If you want to get your home wares even cheaper, there are a number of mom and pop stores that sell the same or similar products around HK. At these stores, you could probably shave another few dollars off the already cheap goods at JHC. It just depends on how much shopping around you are willing to do for a few bucks?
