I am definitely NOT hooked. The cost of the meal does not add up to the quality and/or taste of the meal. The cost was $ 110 for my meal. I guess it isn’t the most expensive fish in the area but I just felt that the food and money don’t equal. Blehhhhh… It’s so unmemorable that all I can remember how unsatisfied I was. And that’s all I can say about this.

I came here after seeing many of Kevin L’s( Unilocal HK’s first CM!) checkins here. And because its in my neighborhood I decided to check this place out. The things I like about this place is that the food is made to order(be prepared to wait!) and the fish seems fresh. It’s a bit pricey but then again most of the stuff is imported, and i guess expat cuisine(along with prices!). I mostly like the lunch specials which is $ 65 for fish filets, sauce, and a drink which makes the deal not so bad. Especially with the servings. If you’re not too hungry you can share it with someone else. Though the things I dislike that this place with its prices is cash only, and also it’s a takeaway only joint so for those who wish to try this but don’t live or work in this area, the nearest public spaces you can sit is the lower part of the escalator or there is an open space near Wo On Lane in Lan Kwai Fong.

As an American, I have been told that I will *never* be a proper fish and chips expert. Despite this handicap, I very much enjoy Hooked. The owner and staff are quite nice and the fish and chips are always made fresh and delicious. Considering the location, the prices are reasonable for what I would find from other SOHO restaraunts, and I always find one order filling enough for me. Aside from the food, they also stock a cooler with wine and craft beer… including American Beer.

Fish is very high quality, like 4 – 5 star hotel quality. However the portion size and amenities don’t meet the prices. I’m ok with paying extra for the chips even when everyone else includes it. What I don’t expect is to pay extra for tarter sauce and ketchup. Ketchup is $ 5 per ounce!!! It’s just ketchup from a bottle, not house made, nothing special. What gives?!?

I’m feeling a bit sad. My old Dad was a fish and chip man in the UK for donkey’s years, and he made fish and chips that would blow your socks off. A massive piece of cod the size of two hands, with a bucket load of chips enough for three! No where in HK can you get anything like the way my old Dad made it. So, when Hooked opened, I nearly killed myself running there to get a feed on my favourite British dish, fish n chips. But I’m not sure what killed me more, literally tripping over on Caine Road, or the bitter disappointment of my soggy fish finger of a meal. I love what Hooked is trying to do here. They are trying to replicate the proper take-away fish and chip experience. No, we don’t need chairs and tables, we don’t need waiters. Yes, we want you to wrap fish and chips in paper, with loads of salt and vinegar, and why not stick a Pukka chicken pie on top of that — do it! And all of this they manage, from the promotional posters for pies, through to the unmistakeable smell of chip fat wafting across Caine Road. Even the prices are«correct» for a chippy, with fish costing HKD75 and chips costing HKD20. It’s all sort of right… Unfortunately, they just haven’t got the portions right. For my HKD95 fish and chips, I expect at least a chunk of fish the size of my hand(which to be fair is largish), and a couple of scoops of chips. You’ll get half of that. I actually need to have two fish and chip dinners to come close to getting enough to eat, so yes, better stick a pie in with that. And, bear in mind that this is the special opening price. Goodness knows what’s going to happen when they go full rate! Look, it’s so great to have a chippy in HK, you know, a proper chippy with chips, cod, pies, sausages(I will overlook the fact that they buy in their chips already cut — grrrr!). It’s just they need to give us value as well. If you need a dose of home great, get your dose. However, I will see you in the Macca’s next door to finish the job.
